The 2008 NFL Season is quickly approaching, with Week 1 action kicking off Thursday, September 4 and proceeding to Sunday, September 7.

Team by team 2008 NFL Super Bowl odds to win are out and oddsmakers from the top online sports books have listed the Kansas City Chiefs as 90/1 long shots to hoist the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the year.

The Chiefs lost arguably their best defensive player when they traded Jared Allen to the Minnesota Vikings this past offseason. They did snare underrated outside linebacker and pass-rush expert Demorrio Williams from the Falcons, as well as add one of the best defensive line prospects in the entire 2008 NFL Draft in LSU’s Glenn Dorsey. Kansas City beefed up the offensive line with the selection of Branden Albert (Virginia), as well as the secondary with Brandon Flowers (Virginia Tech).

NFL enthusiasts are rather down on the Chiefs following a 4-12 2007 campaign. The Chiefs never really got going last year and young quarterback Brodie Croyle struggled at times. The offensive line was also dismantled by injury, leaving running back Larry Johnson to fend for himself on most occasions.

Kansas City e is considered a heavy long shot at all of the major bookmakers. Current prices on the Chiefs’ chances to win the 2009 Super Bowl range from 100/1 at Sportsbook.com, 90/1 at Bodog, and 99/1 at SBG Global.

Oddsmakers have also set the Chiefs’ over/under total for wins in 2008 at 6, but clearly think Kansas City will lose more than 6 games considering the under pays out at –120 compared to -110 for the over.

While Kansas City is one of the heavy long shots to win the 2009 Super Bowl, there are a lot of bright spots for this team. Head coach Herm Edwards is an excellent motivator and won’t allow his team to quit. Croyle should hopefully continue to improve and Johnson is still one of the best running backs in the league. Second year pro Dwayne Bowe emerged as a true deep threat last year and the defense has some solid young talent in Dorsey, Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson. With the way teams surprise every year in the NFL, don’t count the Chiefs out in 2008.
