Can the New England Patriots put their Super Bowl loss to the New York Giants behind them and concentrate on 2008? Oddsmakers clearly think so, and have made the Patriots heavy favorites to win the 2009 Super Bowl, setting their odds at 7/2.
When you go undefeated during the regular season, there aren’t a lot of additions that have to be made. The biggest move the Patriots made was re-signing wide receiver Randy Moss and linebacker Tedy Bruschi. Pairing Moss up with quarterback Tom Brady should insure that New England’s offense will once again be very explosive in 2008.
It’s hard to believe that the Pats got any better, but they probably did with the additions of rookie linebackers Jerod Mayo (Tennessee) and Shawn Crable (Michigan). NFL pundits are once again high on the Patriots this year with how many starters are returning, plus they have one of the best in-game coaches in Bill Belichick.
No matter where you look, the Patriots are considered heavy favorites at all the sports books. Current prices on the Patriots’ chances to win the 2009 Super Bowl are set at 7/2 at Sportsbook.com, Bodog and SBG Global.
Oddsmakers have also set the Patriots’ over/under total for wins in 2008 at 12.5, but clearly think New England will win more than 12.5 games considering the over pays out at –130 compared to EVEN for the under.
They might not win 17 games again in the regular season, but the Patriots are going to be one of the best teams in the league again – no question asked. They have an incredible offensive led by Brady and Moss – not too mention a fantastic offensive line – as well as a solid defense led by Richard Seymour and a host of others. The Pats are the clear cut favorites to win it all this year, even despite losing cornerback Asante Samuel and the Spygate Scandal still somewhat hanging over their heads.
