Even though they’re the 2007 NFC South Champions, oddsmakers have made the Tampa Bay Buccaneers long shots at 45/1 long shots to win the 2009 Super Bowl.

The Bucs’ biggest acquisition was signing free agent center Jeff Faine, formerly of the New Orleans Saints. The team also signed defensive back Eugene Wilson from the Patriots, Marques Douglas (49ers) and re-signed defensive end Kevin Carter.

Questions surround the Buccaneers this season because of the uncertainty of quarterback Jeff Garcia, who threatened to sit out the entire 2008 season if he didn’t receive a new contract. Running back Carnell “Cadillac” Williams is also coming off knee surgery and the defense is aging. But Jon Gruden had his team ready to play last year and if Garcia returns as the starter under center, the Bucs have a great chance to repeat as NFC South champs.

The Bucs are considered long shots at all of the major online sports books. Current prices on the Bucs’ chances to win the 2009 Super Bowl range from 40/1 at Sportsbook.com, 40/1 at Bodog, and 40/1 at SBG Global.

Oddsmakers have also set the Bucs’ over/under total for wins in 2008 at 8, but clearly think Tampa Bay will win more than 8 games considering the over pays out at –120 compared to -110 for the under.

The New Orleans Saints look strong again this year, but the NFC South is still up for grabs. The Bucs return their core unit on defense, including corner Ronde Barber, linebackers Derrick Brooks, Barrett Ruud and Cato June, as well as emerging defensive end Gaines Adams. Once again, if Garcia returns as starting quarterback to lead Gruden’s offense, the Bucs have enough talent to make a postseason run.
