Even though the Tennessee Titans went to the playoffs in 2007, oddsmakers don’t like their chances to win the 2009 Super Bowl and have listed their odds at 40/1.

The Titans brought back their biggest piece to the defense when they franchised defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. The team also gave quarterback Vince Young a new weapon when they signed former Falcons’ tight end Alge Crumpler. Tennessee brought back a familiar face when they signed released defensive end Javon Kearse.

If Young can stay healthy, the Titans have high hopes of heading back to the playoffs this year. Plenty of pundits raised eyebrows when Tennessee drafted running back Chris Johnson in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft, considering youngster LenDale White and Chris Henry are in front of him on the depth chart. The defense should be solid again this year, however, and enthusiasts expect the Titans to at least be competitive.

The Titans are considered long shots at all of the major online sports books. Current prices on the Titans’ chances to win the 2009 Super Bowl range from 40/1 at Sportsbook.com and SBG Global, while Bodog has their odds listed at 45/1.

Oddsmakers have also set the Titans’ over/under total for wins in 2008 at 8, but clearly think Tennessee will win more than 8 games considering the over pays out at –120 compared to -110 for the under.

Given Young’s ability to make plays with both his arm and his legs, the Titans have been competitive the last two years. Young might not be the most polished quarterback in the league, but he knows how to win. One of the three running backs should emerge and Crumpler gives Young a nice target in the middle of the field. At 40/1 odds, the Titans are long shots to win the 2009 Super Bowl, but shouldn’t be ruled out as a potential sleeper.
