Is this the year Colt McCoy breaks out? Oddsmakers are hesitant on the Texas Longhorns this year and have made them a 20/1 long shot to win the 2009 BCS National Championship.
There’s no doubt that quarterback Colt McCoy is the real deal after passing for 3,303 yards and also adding 492 yards on the ground. But does he need more help on offense? Quan Cosby now becomes McCoy’s main weapon in the passing game, but Vondrell McGee, Chris Ogbonnaya and Foswhitt Whitaker will have to step up at running back for the Longhorns to truly have success this year. Texas will rely on cornerback Ryan Palmer (80 tackles), defensive end Brian Orapko (5.5 sacks) and corner Deon Beasley (three interceptions) to lead the defense.
The major online sports books can’t seem to agree on Texas’s odds to win the 2009 BCS National Championship. Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog have made the Longhorns a 20/1 long shot, while Sportsbook.com has them at 30/1 and SBG Global at 12/1.
The Longhorns have tons of potential, but they also have some big question marks, which is probably why oddsmakers are undecided on what odds to give Texas in 2008. McCoy is a fantastic player, but he’ll need help and the defense loses a ton of talent with the departures of safety Marcus Griffin and defensive tackle Frank Okam. Texas is one of the favorites in the Big 12 this year, but do they have enough to match up with rival Oklahoma? They could be the ultimate sleeper or they could sink. But at 30/1 odds, they’re nevertheless a good value.
