Can Frank Beamer and the Virginia Tech Hokies build off an impressive 2007 season? Oddsmakers have made VA Tech a 30/1 long shot to win the 2009 BCS National Championship.

The Hokies get quarterback Sean Glennon back this season, which is a huge boost to their offense. Glennon passed for 1,796 yards last year, but Tyrod Taylor will get a look at the QB position as well. VA Tech has always prided itself on defense and the Hokies will get Victor “Macho” Harris back at cornerback. Playing alongside Harris will be Kam Chancellor (79 tackles) and defensive end Orion Martin (6.5 sacks) returns up front.

The major online sports books can’t seem to agree on Virginia Tech’s odds this season. Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog have made the Hokies a 30/1 long shot to win the BCS National Championship this season, while Sportsbook.com lists them at 35/1 and SBG Global at 12/1.

Losing running back Branden Ore hurts, but Glennon and Taylor are solid and the offensive line returns four starters from a season ago. Beamer’s teams are always known for their defense and special teams, which should be outstanding once again this year. Virginia Tech is a long shot to compete for the national title, but its defense will always keep them in games and there’s no doubt the Hokies can give Clemson a run for the ACC crown.
