The Washington Redskins have a new coach, but they’re hoping for a repeat in 2008 when they made the playoffs. Oddsmakers have made the Redskins a 40/1 long shot to win the 2009 Super Bowl.

The Redskins didn’t make a huge splash in free agency this year, but decided to bring key contributors from last year’s postseason team. One of the biggest re-hires was quarterback Todd Collins, who helped led the Skins to an amazing playoff run last season. While they didn’t sign any big name free agents, the Redskins didn’t stand pat all offseason. They recently traded two draft picks for former Miami Dolphins’ defensive end Jason Taylor, who should certainly boost the pass rush.

Pundits aren’t necessarily sour on the Redskins due to their solid draft. They added receivers Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly and tight end Fred Davis in the second round in efforts to give quarterback Jason Campbell more targets. One of the Redskins biggest issues will be playing in a stacked NFC East with the Dallas Cowboys and defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

Bet on the Washington Redskins To Win Super Bowl XLIII

Washington’s odds are consistent across the board at all the major sports books. Current prices on the Redskins’ chances to win the 2009 Super Bowl range from 40/1 at Sportsbook.com, Bodog and SBG Global.

Oddsmakers have also set the Redskins’ over/under total for wins in 2008 at 7.5, but clearly think Washington will win more than 7.5 games considering the over pays out at –125 compared to -105 for the under.

No doubt, there are some concerns about the Redskins given that they play in a tough division. But they have plenty of talent, including Clinton Portis, LaRon Landry and Santana Moss. Campbell was also developing nicely last year before he was injured and the offensive line played better than expected last year too. With the recent acquisition of Taylor, the defensive should be improved as well. At 40/1 odds to win, the Redskins might be a good value bet this season.
