According to oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com, the Packers have opened as 1.5-point favorites over the Steelers for Super Bowl XLV. The over/under total for the game opened at 46 points.
There has already been early action placed on the game, with the line moving up to Packers –2.5 and the total dropping to 45.5. With the way both defenses played on Championship Sunday, it’s not surprising to see the total drop. And seeing as how Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay has been everyone’s darlings for the past couple of weeks, it’s not totally surprising that the Packers are favored earlier.
That said, the Steelers are returning to the Super Bowl for the third time in six years after beating the Jets 24-19 on Sunday. Ben Roethlisberger is 2-0 in the Super Bowl and head coach Mike Tomlin is 1-0. Pittsburgh also has the most Super Bowl victories in NFL history (six).
The Packers have a rich history themselves. This will be Green Bay’s fifth Super Bowl appearance, as the Packers are 3-1 in the big game. The last time they played in the title game was 1997 when they lost to the Denver Broncos. The last time they won was 1996 when they beat the New England Patriots.
It’ll be interesting to see which way the line moves over the next two weeks. The public seemingly is behind the Packers, but it has to be enticing to bettors to take the Steelers when they’re the underdogs in a Super Bowl. Of course, the key will be whether or not the line moves to one of the all-important numbers like 3.
