1) British Columbia Lions

The BC Lions are the team to beat in the West, if not in the entire league. Following a 2011 Grey Cup Championship, the Lions had the best regular season record with (13) victories before they were upset by Calgary in the West Division Final. They still have the best quarterback in the West Division with QB Travis Lulay, the former Montana State Bobcat who's thrown (59) touchdowns passes over the last two seasons against (21) interceptions. The Lions no longer have Geroy Simon, Arland Bruce and Byron Parker on the roster but this is a team looking to get younger at critical positions. The loss of Khalif Mitchell is critical but should be more than offset by the the linebacking corps, which is one to fear. Behind Solomon Elimimian, Adam Bighill and Anton McKenzie, the Lions will once again lead the league in most notable defensive statistics as they did in 2012. This is a powerful defence led by head coach Mike Benevides that led the league last year by holding foes to (295) yards per game and just under (20) points per game.

2) Calgary Stampeders

The Stampeders need to get off to a little better start to find themselves right in the running again. Calgary started (3-4) last year before winning (11) of its last (14) games. Calgary used its (30) PPG last year, which ranked second in the league, to go (12-6) then upset BC in the playoffs before losing the Grey Cup championship game to Toronto. This year the Stampeders will probably rack up yardage and points in a similar fashion to last year. No matter who starts at quarterback, Calgary will be able to put up points as they were tied for the league lead with (51) touchdowns led by Nik Lewis and Jon Cornish. Drew Tate's injury problems are a concern, especially with a shoulder for a quarterback but their defensive line will continue to wreak havoc and have this team in the discussion. After ranking third in points allowed at (24) per game and fourth in yardage at (354) YPG, the Stampeders defense looks to have a very high ceiling.

3) Saskatchewan Roughriders

The 101st Grey Cup championship game will be played Nov. 24 at Mosaic Stadium in Regina and will be hosted by the Saskatchewan Roughriders this season. Their fans would love nothing more than for their favorite team to be one of the participants. The offence should be good but this defence could be something special. Saskatchewan went only (8-10) last year but owned the second-best defense in the league. This is a defence made for big plays and to give the offence a short field to work with. In comes an arsenal around Darian Durant that could put up impressive numbers. Big Questions to be answered are if John Chick is the same player he was in 2009 and whether or not Ricky Foley has enough left in the tank for one more productive season. Turnovers and big plays were at a minimum but the Roughriders are led by a quarterback looking to be seen as the best in the league. Former Louisville QB Brian Brohm has been added. The Roughriders led the league in time of possession last year, and they've got something to prove after losing their last five games.

4) Edmonton Eskimos

Questions at quarterback and offensive line could plague Edmonton all season long. Much depends on what Mike Reilly can do as the #1 quarterback for the team. The Edmonton Eskimos offensive line has some concerns and already Matt Nicholls injury is hurting their quarterback depth. Much like last year, there will be games the defence outscores their offence and why they win nearly half their games. Edmonton's Green and Gold still finds ways to make the playoffs behind their seventh-ranked offense and eighth-ranked defense.

We expect the B.C. Lions and Calgary Stampeders to fight it out to represent the West Division in the Grey Cup.

1) Montreal Alouettes

The Montreal Alouettes finished in 1st place in the East Division with a (11-7) record but the Alouettes lost the East Final to the Toronto Argonauts (27-20) as their defense let them down and allowed many big plays. The Alouettes won three of their last four games last year to win the East Division but Montreal lived dangerously last year, because while it finished four games above (.500), it also got outscored on the season by (11) points, winning five games by six points or less. The Als now move on without head coach Marc Trestman, who got hired away by the Chicago Bears. Movin' on in Montreal, this franchise had turned to Dan Hawkins to replace Marc Trestman. Dan Hawkins has a tough act to follow as not only does he have no CFL coaching experience, he replaces Marc Trestman, who led the club to a (59-31) regular-season record and two Grey Cup wins over five seasons. Fortunately for Hawkins, the offense is led by the CFL model of consistency in Anthony Calvillo, who returns for a 20th CFL season. The 40-year-old threw for more than (5,000) yards three times during Trestman's tenure and he has all the tools at his disposal for another successful season. With veteran receivers Jamel Richardson and S.J. Green to throw to along with running back Brandon Whitaker, the CFL rushing leader in 2011, and he has also resumed practicing after suffering a season-ending knee injury last year, there is no doubt Montreal will be favored in the majority of games they play this season. There is still plenty of leadership on the defensive end and the addition of Ejiro Kuale should be huge for an Alouettes defensive squad looking to cut down on the number of big plays against them. They've missed the last two Grey Cups and now they've gotten somewhat younger, we will see if the leadership can keep up this pace.

2) Toronto Argonauts

The Toronto Argonauts will attempt to win consecutive Grey Cup titles for the first time since 1996-97. Toronto captured the 100th Grey Cup last year with a new head coach (Scott Milanovich) and quarterback (Ricky Ray), and both return with a year together under their belt. The Champs found their rhythm late last season as something clicked in the playoffs, as the Argonauts beat Edmonton, Montreal and Calgary in succession, the last two as pointspread underdogs, to secure their first Grey Cup title since 2004. It took Ray some time to become acclimated to Milanovich's offence, but down the stretch the veteran quarterback showed the poise and savvy Argos GM Jim Barker had expected when he acquired Ray in a blockbuster deal with the Edmonton Eskimos. Ray showed a definite chemistry with Chad Owens, who was the CFL's outstanding player. Toronto returns much of the same team that went just (.500) last season. Even if Toronto does not finish in first you can at least expect the majority of their games to be high scoring affairs. Toronto went just (9-9) during the regular season last year, ranking sixth in scoring at (25) PPG, fourth in yardage, sixth in points allowed at (27) PPG and fifth in total defense. However, gone are Armond Armstead, Ricky Foley, Ejiro Kuale plus the release of Kevin Huntley putting added pressure on the coaching staff and an under rated linebacking trio of Marcus Ball, Robert McCune and Brandon Isaac to pick up the slack. During the off-season GM Barker acquired controversial defensive tackle Khalif Mitchell from B.C. Mitchell is a former CFL all-star who was suspended twice last season.

3) Hamilton Tiger Cats

The Tiger-Cats finished in 4th place in the East Division with a (6-12) record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008; this was despite the fact that the team scored more points in the 2012 season than any other CFL team (offset by the fact that they also gave up more points than any other CFL team). The Ticats missed the playoffs last year, costing head coach/GM George Cortez his job after just one season. The club hired former CFL quarterback and head coach Kent Austin as its vice-president of football operations, GM and coach. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats will play their home games in Guelph, Ont., as a new venue is built where Ivor Wynne Stadium, once stood. Offensively, quarterback Quinton Porter and running backs Martel Mallett and Avon Cobourne were released while receiver/returner Chris Williams remains embroiled in a contract dispute. However, don't expect that their offence will take that much of a dip. A priority was revamping a defence that allowed (32) points (league-high) and (409) yards (second-most) per game. Veteran linebacker Rey Williams, defensive backs Bo Smith and Geoff Tisdale were released while linebacker Shomari Williams, defensive lineman Brian Bulke and defensive backs Evan McCullough and James Patrick were signed. This could be the year we see the Black and Gold back near the top of the East.

4) Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Following an appearance in the 99th Grey Cup, Winnipeg scored a league-low (376) points to finish the 2012 season with a (6-12) mark. Now under the leadership of Tim Burke who has been one of the most successful coaches in football, but we will have to see if he has the horses to keep up in this race. The Blue Bombers' have reason for optimism - including a new stadium and the return of quarterback Buck Pierce, who missed most of last season due to multiple injuries. Pierce is the only quarterback on the roster with substantial CFL experience. Winnipeg, which ranked last in many important offensive categories last year but won four of its last seven games. Another year with Chris Matthews and Terrence Edwards in the Bombers receiving corps gives some the offense some hope. At the very least the good people of Winnipeg will have a fancy new stadium to watch their team in.
