Blade & Michael,
I am an online poker player who has recently started betting a lot on sports. I hit big in the first week of the college football season with a 3-team parlay Cal -6.5 vs. Michigan State, Mizzou -9 vs. Illinois, Bama Straight up vs. Clemson. Won $8,900 and cashed out. In the weeks since I have had a couple solid weeks and dumped some money back. I know this was a lucky amateur play, happens in poker all the time. But I am humbly asking you guys for any information regarding how to develop a solid sports betting system for another supplemental income. I am in college and poker pays the bills. I believe to be good at something its good to learn from people who are obviously knowledgeable. Any articles/advice is welcomed. Thanks for your time.
Hey buddy, welcome to the site.
Pretty tricky question you come out of the box with there.
Here's the thing. Before you get started you need to make a philosophical decision about you motivations. By that I mean, do you really want to develop a sound handicapping strategy or do you just want to win money?
If you really want to do the leg work yourself I would suggest you do some studying up on betting first. There are a ton of good books out there that explain the nuances of sports betting, what to look out for and what to expect. After that you want to start pouring over the tools that are available here. Odds comparisons, public betting info, matchups, injuries, weather (when applicable), historical betting trends, etc.
If that doesn't sound like you and you really don't give a shit about being a great handicapper I would suggest researching some handicapping services and pick one with a good reputation and solid long term return. There are many out there that cover all the major college and professional sports.
Whatever you decide this game is a marathon, not a sprint and just like with poker if you take some bad beats you need to have the mental toughness not to waver and make stupid bets when steaming.
Hope this helps.
