CFL Betting Recap - Week 5
By Joe Williams
VegasInsider.com

League Betting Notes

Favorites/underdogs went 2-2 SU in Week 5
Favorites/underdogs went 2-2 ATS in Week 5
Road teams posted a 4-0 SU record in Week 4
Road teams posted a 3-0-1 ATS record in Week 4
The 'Under' went 3-1 in Week 4

Team Betting Notes

Ottawa (3-1-1) suffered its first loss of the season. That part isn't so shocking, as they were due to lose eventually. However, it was WHO they lost to. Saskatchewan (1-3) finally earned a win in its fourth try, edging the RedBlacks 30-29 at home. It was the third consecutive 'over' result for the Roughriders.

The RedBlacks are now just 1-1-1 SU against the West Division, and they're 0-2 ATS in their past two against the other division. The 'over' result was their first since Week 1, snapping a 2-0-1 'under' streak.

Edmonton (2-2) was tripped up 37-31 at home against Hamilton (3-2), as the Eskimos defense let them down again. So far the Esks have allowed 36 or more points in three of their first four games. As such, it's no surprise the 'over' is 3-1 through Edmonton's four games.

The Tigers-Cats haven't been able to figure it out at home, but they certainly have been comfortable on the road. The Ti-Cats are 0-2 SU/ATS at home, and 3-0 SU/ATS on the road this season. Remember that Aug. 3 at Winnipeg, and Aug. 13 at B.C. Lions, in their next two outings.

The Blue Bombers have been terrible, going 1-4 SU/ATS through five outings. They're especially poor at home, as the Bombers are 0-3 SU/ATS while averaging just 16.0 points per game and allowing 25.0 points per contest in Winnipeg.

Toronto (3-2) dumped Montreal (1-3), as the Alouettes haven't won since June 24 in Winnipeg. The Alouettes have had a power outage on offense, averaging just 12.3 points per game over the past three, all non-covers. The 'under' is also 3-1 this season for Montreal.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 6
By David Schwab
VegasInsider.com

The early race for a title in each CFL division tightened up with last week’s results. Calgary improved its position in the West standings with last Thursday’s 33-18 victory against Winnipeg as a five-point road favorite. On Friday night, Saskatchewan stunned Ottawa 30-29 as a 6 ½-point underdog at home to post its first win of the year.

This past Saturday’s action in the CFL featured a big interdivision showdown between Hamilton and Edmonton with the Tiger-Cats prevailing as four-point road underdogs in a 37-31 upset. Week 5 closed things out on Monday night with Toronto knocking off Montreal 30-17 as a 4½-point favorite at home. Here is a look at Week 6 in the CFL.

Thursday, July 28

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-4 SU, 1-4 ATS) vs. Edmonton Eskimos (2-2 SU, 0-3-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Edmonton -9½
Total: 54½

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers have dug themselves an early hole and now there are some question marks at the quarterback position after Matt Nichols replaced Drew Willy late in the game last week against Calgary. Nichols was able to find Weston Dressler with a scoring strike to close the deficit to within eight points, but Winnipeg’s defense allowed the Stampeders to expand their lead to 15 points by the closing gun.

Edmonton has already lost half as many games as it did all last season in its run to a Grey Cup title. You cannot place all that much blame on the Eskimos’ offense for last week’s loss after building a 31-20 lead over Hamilton heading into the fourth quarter. Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly ended that game with 354 yards passing and three touchdown throws while completing an impressive 76.2 percent of his 42 passing attempts.

Betting Trends

The Blue Bombers are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games against the Eskimos and they have gone 0-5 ATS in their last five road games against Edmonton. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings.

Friday, July 29

Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-3 SU, 2-2 ATS) vs. Montreal Alouettes (1-3 SU, 1-3 ATS)

Point-spread: OFF
Total: OFF

Game Overview

The Roughriders posted their first straight-up victory of the year in dramatic fashion on game-winning 53-yard field goal with just over a minute to play. The biggest storyline in last week’s upset was the play of Mitchell Gale in his first CFL start at quarterback for an injured Darian Durant. Gale threw for 354 yards and a score including eight completions to Naaman Roosevelt for 182 yards. Darian remains questionable to return to action this Friday night.

Montreal gave up 21 points in the second quarter of Monday night’s rout to help seal its third loss in four games. The Alouettes have been outscored 103-59 in those first four contests and the prospect for any kind of quick turnaround does not look good. Kevin Glenn was back under center for Montreal and despite the fact that he completed 24-of-28 attempts for 285 yards, he still could not get his team in the end zone more than once through the air.

Betting Trends

The Alouettes have covered ATS in six of the last eight meetings in this interdivision clash and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in 16 of the last 21 meetings in Montreal.

British Columbia Lions (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS) vs. Calgary Stampeders (2-1-1 SU, 3-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Calgary -5
Total: 49

Game Overview

The Lions have carved out the early lead in the West Division behind an offense that is averaging over 400 total yards a game with a solid balance between the pass and the run. They have also been stingy on the other side of the ball behind a defense that has only allowed an average of 18.3 points a game. They are coming off a bye week following a 40-27 victory against Saskatchewan in Week 4 as 1½-point underdogs on the road.

Calgary has now covered the spread in its last three games with the total going OVER in all three contests. Bo Levi Mitchell continued to light things up through the air with 310 yards passing and three touchdown throws in last week’s win against Winnipeg. He completed 70.7 percent of his 41 attempts while connecting with seven different receivers. Jerome Messam paced the Stampeders’ ground game with 65 yards on 13 carries.

Betting Trends

Head-to-head in this West Division rivalry, the Lions won the first meeting this season 20-18 as 2½-point home underdogs, but they have gone just 1-6 ATS in their last seven road games against the Stampeders. The total has gone OVER the closing line in five of the last seven meetings in Calgary.

Sunday, July 31

Toronto Argonauts (3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS) vs. Ottawa RedBlacks (3-1-1 SU, 3-2 ATS)

Point-spread: Ottawa OFF
Total: OFF

Game Overview

Toronto has now won three of its last four games both SU and against the spread including wins on the road against Saskatchewan and British Columbia. Credit Ricky Ray for Monday night’s win after throwing for three touchdowns. Ray left the game in the fourth quarter with a leg injury and right now it looks like Logan Kilgore might get the start on Sunday after coming into this past Monday’s game as his replacement.

The RedBlacks will look to quickly bounce back from their first SU loss of the season, but they may have to do it without the services of their starting quarterback Trevor Harris. He left last week’s game early in the first quarter with a leg injury and his status for Sunday remains up in the air. Harris has been one of the CFL’s top passers this season in both yards (1,499) and touchdowns (9). If he cannot go, we may see the return of Henry Burris at quarterback after missing the first five games with a hand injury.

Betting Trends

Ottawa drew first blood in this season’s series with a 30-20 victory on July 13 as a one-point road favorite. Toronto still has a SU 4-2 edge against the RedBlacks over the last six meetings and the total has gone OVER in three of the last four games.

Thursday's CFL Betting Preview: Blue Bombers at Eskimos
By Covers.com

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Edmonton Eskimos (-9.5, 56)

The Edmonton Eskimos look to bounce back from the worst collapse in franchise history when they host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday. The Eskimos blew a 25-point halftime lead in the 37-31 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Week 5 and they hope to recover by beating the Blue Bombers for the second time in two weeks.

Edmonton has dropped two of its first three home games after going 8-1 in the regular season at Commonwealth Stadium in 2015, but is undefeated in its last nine home meetings with Winnipeg. The Blue Bombers are left to pick up the pieces following a 33-18 setback to the Calgary Stampeders. Winnipeg head coach Mike O'Shea announced that Matt Nichols, who threw a touchdown pass after replacing an ineffective Drew Willy in the fourth quarter of the loss to the Stampeders, will get the start on Thursday and the former Eskimo hopes to lead the Blue Bombers to their first win in the series since July 26, 2012. "It's a good opportunity for Matt and we'll see where this takes us," O'Shea told reporters. "I'm just trying to provide a spark to the offence and change it up a little to try and score more points."

LINE HISTORY: Edmonton opened as nine-point favorites and the line wavered throughout the week before settling in at -9.5. The total opened at 53.5 and was bet al of the way up to 56 by Thursday afternoon. Check out the complete line history here.

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (1-4 SU, 1-4 ATS, 1-3-1 O/U): Willy completed 23-of-33 passes for 234 yards, but threw a costly interception that was returned for a touchdown before being pulled while Nichols finished 9-of-15 for 88 yards and a score in the fourth quarter against Calgary. Offensive lineman Paddy Neufeld (foot), defensive backs Chris Randle (leg), Julian Posey (undisclosed) and Macho Harris (undisclosed) suffered injuries against the Stampeders and will miss Thursday's game. Winnipeg signed defensive back Chris Greenwood, who spent the 2014 season on the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad, to add depth to a banged-up secondary.

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS, 3-1 O/U): Mike Reilly passed for 354 yards and three touchdowns in the loss to the Tiger-Cats to break Warren Moon's franchise record for most consecutive 300-yard passing games with seven. Adarius Bowman continues to terrorize opposing secondaries as he caught nine passes for 111 yards and a touchdown to go over the 100-yard mark for the fourth consecutive game. Derel Walker added 12 receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown to give him 19 catches for 294 yards and two scores in his last two games.

TRENDS:

* Blue Bombers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
* Eskimos are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a straight up loss.
* Under is 6-1-1 in Blue Bombers last 8 games overall.
* Over is 7-1 in Eskimos last 8 home games.
* Under is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings in Edmonton.

CONSENSUS: The public is leaning toward the favorite Edmonton Eskimos at a rate of 56 percent and Under is getting the majority of the action on the total at 54 percent.

EXTRA POINTS:

* The Eskimos have won seven straight meetings with the Blue Bombers.
* Winnipeg has started 1-4 six times since 1997.

Friday Night CFL Doubleheader Preview: Roughriders at Alouettes and Lions at Stampeders
By Covers.com

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Montreal Alouettes (-1, 49)

The Saskatchewan Roughriders look to build on their impressive Week 5 victory when they travel to Quebec to take on the Montreal Alouettes on Friday. The Roughriders rallied to beat the previously undefeated Ottawa Redblacks 30-29 to hand Chris Jones his first win since taking the coaching job in the offseason, and hope to beat Montreal for the third straight time after sweeping the season series in 2015.

Quarterback Mitchell Gale emerged victorious in his first CFL start against the Redblacks, but Jones confirmed that Darian Durant, who shared the first-team snaps in practice, will get the start if he recovers in time from a sprained ankle. The Alouettes are heading in the wrong direction following a 30-17 loss to the Toronto Argonauts on Monday. Kevin Glenn, who spent the majority of the 2015 season with Saskatchewan before being shipped to Montreal just before the trade deadline, left the game in the fourth quarter with back spasms but returned after missing a few series and should be ready to go Friday. Montreal is averaging a CFL-low 14.7 points per game and hopes the offence comes alive against a Saskatchewan defence that gives up a league-high 34.5 points per contest.

LINE HISTORY: This line has seen plenty of movement since opening at a Pick'em, were it stayed for a few days. Then it immediately jumped to Als -2.5, before slowly moving a half-point at a time back down to a Pick. However, Thursday night, the line moved back to Als -1, where it currently sits.

As for the total, it opened at 50 and has gradually moved down to the current number of 49. Check out the complete line history here.

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (1-3, 2-2 ATS, 3-1 O/U): Gale completed 21-of-36 passes for 354 yards and a touchdown, including an 89-yard scoring strike to Naaman Roosevelt, against Ottawa. "We just wanted to win and get the monkey off our back," Roosevelt told reporters."We could see the confidence that Mitch had and it brings us more confidence and excitement as we just want to make plays for him." Brandon McDonald, who was burned on a touchdown pass against the Redblacks, was released to make room for former Nebraska defensive back Major Culbert.

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (1-3, 1-3 ATS, 1-3 O/U): Boris Bede missed three field goals against the Argonauts and is 5-of-12 on the season after going 36-of-40 in 2015. "It wasn't a good performance and for sure I'm disappointed," Bede told reporters. "I don't think it's a problem as I've just got to get to my happy place again and I'll be fine." Duron Carter is emerging as a legitimate big-play receiver as the former Ohio State product caught six passes for 124 yards and a touchdown to bring his season average to 15.3 yards per catch.

TRENDS:

* Roughriders are 0-5 ATS in their last five games following a SU win.
* Alouettes are 0-5 ATS in their last five home games.
* Over is 6-1 in Roughriders last seven games overall.
* Under is 9-2 in Alouettes last 11 home games.
* Roughriders are 2-6 ATS in their last eight meetings.

CONSENSUS: The public is sididng with the road dog here, with 55 percent of wagers on the Roughriders. Bettors are almost split down the middle when it comes to the total with 51 percent of wagers giving the slight edge to the Under.

EXTRA POINTS:

* Saskatchewan has dropped 13 of its last 14 regular-season road games since September 2014.
* The Alouettes haven't scored 30 or more points in a game since Oct. 23, 2015.
* Former Montreal SB Ben Cahoon will have his number 86 retired at halftime.

B.C. Lions at Calgary Stampeders (-4, 48.5)

The Calgary Stampeders host the BC Lions in a battle for West Division supremacy Friday. Calgary cruised to a 33-18 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to move within a point of BC, which was idle in Week 5, at the top of the division and the Stampeders hope to avenge a 20-18 loss to the Lions in the season opener.

Calgary has won the last three home meetings with BC, including 35-9 in the West Division semifinal last season, and can improve to 10-1 at McMahon Stadium since the start of 2014 with another victory. The Lions are feeling good about themselves after a 40-27 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on July 16. Jonathon Jennings had his best game as a pro as he threw for a career-high 429 yards and accounted for four touchdowns and BC hopes its young quarterback takes another step forward in his development by leading the Lions to their first win in Calgary since Aug. 1, 2014. BC has won three straight regular-season road games dating back to last season and another victory would open up a three-point lead as the Lions continue their quest for their first division title in five years.

LINE HISTORY: The Stamps opened as 5-point home favorites, but have since been jumping back and forth between -4.5 and -4. The latter being the current number. There has been little movement when it comes to the total. The number opened at 49 and has been bet down a half point to 48.5. Check out the complete line history here.

ABOUT THE LIONS (3-1, 3-1 ATS, 1-3 O/U): Defensive back T.J. Lee suffered an Achilles injury in the fourth quarter against Saskatchewan and has been ruled out for the rest of the year while wide receiver Nick Moore underwent season-ending surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ACL. Mic'hael Brooks, who was flagged for three major penalties in the first half against Saskatchewan, was fined $1,000 by the CFL for a low hit on Darian Durant, which knocked the veteran quarterback out of the game. "I never go out to injure anyone but things are going to happen," Brooks told reporters. "Sometimes they get hurt in the process."

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (2-1-1, 3-1 ATS, 1-1-2 O/U): Bo Levi Mitchell had another stellar outing as he completed 29-of-41 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns against Winnipeg. Calgary brought in defensive back Shaquille Richardson for his second tour of duty with team after the former Arizona Wildcat was released by the Carolina Panthers a few weeks ago while defensive end James Vaughters was also added to the roster. "We're light at that D-end position," Calgary coach Dave Dickenson told reporters. "He's from Stanford so he's fairly smart and we're looking for him to compete."

TRENDS:

* Lions are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games.
* Stampeders are 6-1 ATS in their last seven home games.
* Under is 6-1 in Lions last seven games overall.
* Under is 5-1-1 in Stampeders last seven versus a team with a winning record.
* Lions are 1-6 ATS in their last seven meetings in Calgary.

CONSENSUS: Bettors like the Stamps in this West Division showdown, with 59 percent of wagers on the home team. As for the total, 56 percent of wagers are on the Over.

EXTRA POINTS:

* Mitchell has passed for more than 300 yards in three straight games.
* Calgary RB Jerome Messam leads the CFL with 250 rushing yards.
* Lions DT Alex Bazzie is tied for the league lead with four sacks.

Sunday's CFL Betting Preview: Argonauts at RedBlacks
By Covers.com

Toronto Argonauts at Ottawa RedBlacks (-10, 50)

The Ottawa Redblacks host the Toronto Argonauts in a battle for top spot in the East Division on Sunday. The Redblacks stayed in first place despite dropping a 30-29 decision to the previously winless Saskatchewan Roughriders in Week 5 and received a huge boost with the news that star quarterback Henry Burris will return to the fold after missing the last four games with a pinky injury on his throwing hand.

Backup quarterback Trevor Harris threw for 1,499 yards and nine touchdowns in Burris' absence, but suffered a knee injury against Saskatchewan and will be sidelined for at least a week and Ottawa hopes Burris returns to the form that saw him win the CFL's Most Outstanding Player award in 2015. Toronto overcame a sluggish start to beat the Montreal Alouettes 30-17 to secure its first victory at BMO Field and move within one point of the Redblacks at the top of the division. The victory came at a steep cost as veteran quarterback Ricky Ray, who missed 15 games in 2015, sprained his MCL after taking a low hit in the fourth quarter and will be sidelined for the next three to six weeks, meaning Logan Kilgore will get his first CFL start on Sunday. "That's why Logan is here as the guys have faith in him and I have faith in him," Toronto coach Scott Milanovich told reporters. "We'll try to put together a plan that's built around his talents and let him go to work."

LINE HISTORY: The RedBlacks opened as heavy 10-point home favorites, but bettors still didn't think that was enough as the line has moved to Ottawa -11. Since then the number has bounced back to the opening number of -10. Meanwhile the total opened at 50.5 and was bet down to 49.5, before bouncing back to the current number of 50. Check out the complete line history here.

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (3-2, 3-2 ATS, 2-3 O/U): Ray went 29-of-34 for 235 yards and three touchdowns before Montreal defensive end Vaughn Martin fell on his knee after he released the ball and Toronto filed an official complaint to the league regarding the hit. Devon Wylie, who played for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012 before bouncing around various practice squads in the NFL, caught five passes for 55 yards and a touchdown in his first CFL game. The Argos signed defensive back Marcus Alford, kicker Ryan Hawkins and running back Chase Price to the practice squad and activated quarterback Adrian McPherson from the six-game injured list.

ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (3-1-1, 3-2 ATS, 2-2-1 O/U): Harris was injured on Ottawa's first possession of the game against Saskatchewan and third-string quarterback Brock Jensen acquitted himself well by throwing for 271 yards and two touchdowns and will back up Burris on Sunday. Burris passed for 989 yards and four touchdowns in three losses to the Argonauts last season and was 23-of-31 for 251 yards and a score before going down in the third quarter of the 45-37 overtime win against the Edmonton Eskimos. "The thing is my body wasn't hurt it was just a finger," Burris told reporters. "I was able to stay physically into it and out there working on my conditioning."
