The 18-game CFL regular season has given-way to the start of the Grey Cup Playoffs with two division semifinal matchups on the slate for this Sunday. In the final week of the regular season, Edmonton lost to Calgary 30-27 as a one-point home favorite, but still earned a crossover spot in the postseason as a result of Hamilton's 43-40 loss to Toronto as a seven-point favorite on the road.
The following is a brief betting report for this Sunday's games with betting lines provided by 5 Dimes.
Edmonton Eskimos vs. Toronto Argonauts (-3½) Total: 51
Edmonton basically backed into the playoffs with three-straight losses down the stretch to finish 7-11 straight-up , but it was still over .500 against the spread at 10-8. The Eskimos went just 2-7 SU (4-5 ATS) on the road this season and the total has now gone OVER in five of their last six games. The one thing in their favor is a 7-2 ATS record in their last nine playoff games.
Toronto won its last two games to even its mark on the year at 9-9 both SU and ATS. It turned in a losing 4-5 SU record at home this season and was even worse ATS at 3-6. The total went OVER in its last three games. The Argonauts are just 6-13 ATS in their last 19 games following a SU win.
The Eskimos swept the season series 2-0 SU and ATS including a convincing 26-17 victory in late August as three-point underdogs on the road. The total stayed UNDER in both games. Edmonton is now 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings and 3-1-1 ATS in its last five trips to Toronto. Be sure to check the injury status of a couple of quarterbacks in this matchup as both Edmonton's Kerry Joseph and Toronto's Ricky Ray are currently listed as questionable for Sunday's game.
Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Calgary Stampeders (-5½) Total: 52
Saskatchewan is another team that brings a losing streak into the playoffs with four-straight losses to close-out the regular season at 8-10 both SU and ATS. It has been a rough ride for this team on the road this year with a 3-6 record SU and ATS. The total has gone OVER in three of their last four games.
Calgary has been biding its time over the past few weeks after clinching the home field for this game. Instead of riding things out, the Stampeders turned things up a notch or two with a four-game winning streak to finish 12-6 SU. They also covered in three of their final four games to go 10-8 ATS with the total going OVER in all four contests. Calgary is 7-2 SU at home this year but just 4-5 ATS.
The Stampeders got the best of this season's three-game series with a 2-1 record SU, but the Roughriders covered in two of the games including a 30-25 victory on Sept.23 as one-point underdogs at home. Overall, Calgary is 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings with the total staying UNDER in four of the seven games. Injuries should not be a major issue for either team, but Stampeders' wide receiver Marquay McDaniel is still listed as questionable after missing the last three games with a tweaked hamstring.

It’s playoff time in the CFL and six teams are dreaming of the potential postseason run that could end at the 100th Grey Cup. The Edmonton Eskimos travel to Toronto to take on the Argonauts in the Eastern Conference Semifinal on Sunday afternoon, while the Saskatchewan Roughriders head to Calgary for their Western Conference Semifinal showdown.
Edmonton at Toronto (-3.5, 50.5)
Eskimos head coach Kavis Reed announced Thursday that veteran QB Kerry Joseph will start and Matt Nichols will be his backup. Reed is hoping Joseph can relive his playoff run in 2007 when he led the Roughriders to the Grey Cup and was named MVP in the game played in Toronto. There have been plenty of distractions off the field for the Eskimos ahead of the Eastern semifinal due the firing of general manager Eric Tillman this week.
Toronto’s success hinges on the red-hot arm of QB Ricky Ray. The former Eskimo has completed 70 percent of his passes for 688 yards and eight touchdowns since taking three games off to rehab a sore knee. The veteran passer is 8-4 all-time in the postseason, but is 0-2 against his former club this campaign.
Edmonton is 4-1 ATS in its last five meetings with Toronto and has covered in its last four division semifinal games.
Saskatchewan at Calgary (-5.5, 51.5)
With just a 3-6 record on the road in 2012, Saskatchewan is going up against a Calgary squad that has won five in a row at home. It's going to be cold (around -15 Celsius with the wind chill) with clear skies and 10 mph winds at McMahon Stadium. That means ball control will be important - and the Riders lead the league in time of possession at 32:06, thanks to a potent rushing attack led by Kory Sheets.
Calgary has lost three straight playoff games, and the last four times these teams have met in the playoffs, the Riders prevailed. Stamps coach John Hufnagel announced Tuesday that “he is playing a hunch” by naming Drew Tate the starter at QB over veteran Kevin Glenn. Tate has battled with a shoulder injury for the majority of the season and has seen limited game action since returning on Oct. 26, tossing only 22 passes. Glenn was statistically the fourth-best QB in the league this season and had the second-highest completion percentage (66.7).
These teams met three times during the regular season, with Calgary taking two of those contests. However, the most recent encounter in late September went in favor of the Riders, 30-25. The Roughriders are 4-0 ATS in their last four playoff road games, while the Stamps are 0-4 ATS in their last four playoff tilts.

Edmonton (7-11) @ Toronto (9-9) — Eskimos made playoffs despite flopping around with 2-8 finish; they beat Toronto twice this year, 19-15 (-1.5) at home in opener, despite being outgained by 71 yards, and 26-17 (+3.5) here in Week 9, when they outrushed Argos 156-70. Edmonton lost its last five road games (2-3 vs spread); they’re 4-4 as road underdogs this year. Toronto won its last two games, scoring 31-43 points, after losing five of previous six games; Argonauts lost five of last seven home games; they’re 1-4 vs spread as home favorites this season. Western teams are 2012 SU against the east this season. Five of last six Eskimo games and last three Toronto games went over the total.
Saskatchewan (8-10) @ Calgary (12-6) — Stampeders won nine of last 11 games after 3-4 start, streaky Roughriders lost last four games, finishing 3W-4L-2W-L-3W-4L rollercoaster this season. Calgary won two of three series games, winning 41-38 (-3.5, OT) here in Week 4, handing Riders their first loss of year (Riders led 21-14 at half), then 17-10 (+2.5) in Regina five weeks later , running ball for 185 yards, before Saskatchewan won third meeting 30-25 (pick) in Week 13. Roughriders lost six of last eight road games, are 3-4 as road underdogs this year (1-4 in last five tries). Calgary won its last five home games but it just 4-5 vs spread as a home favorite (3-1 in last four tries). Over is 5-1-1 in Stamps’ last seven games, 3-1 in Riders’ last four.
