CFL Week 1 Odds and Picks
By Charles-André Marchand

Thursday, July 1

Montreal Alouettes (-3) at Saskatchewan Roughriders

The Roughriders suffered an excruciating loss to the Alouettes in last year’s Grey Cup game and the offseason didn’t improve things for the Green Nation. They lost key players to the NFL and their offensive coordinator Paul LaPolice to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

That said, Saskatchewan is supported by one of the loudest crowds, making the Riders never easy to beat in their windy house.

And don’t forget that the reigning Grey Cup Champions Montreal Alouettes will show up with an unproven duet of cornerbacks. Stanford Samuels will try to replace Davis Sanchez, who’s now in B.C., and veteran Mark Estelle will miss the season opener because of an injury. De’Audra Dix, who has been inconsistent in his rookie season with the Als, will cover the short corner.

Expect the Roughriders, led by QB Darian Durant, to challenge both of them early and often.

Pick: Saskatchewan

Toronto Argonauts at Calgary Stampeders (-12.5)

The Stamps enter Week 1 looking to carry some momentum forward from the preseason, when they topped Edmonton and Saskatchewan. In those two games, the Stampeders looked like they were in midseason form.

That’s not good news for Toronto that, despite the acquisition of Jeremaine Copeland, seriously lacks any real offensive threats. The Argos defense may be able to keep this one close for one or two quarters but that won’t be enough to stop Henry Burris and his teammates.

The rebuilding Argos give the ball to unproven QB Cleo Lemon, who was awful in preseason, and hope for their offensive line to hold off pass rushers after a miserable 2009 season. The addition of Rob Murphy certainly will help, but will it be enough?

The longest active losing streak in the CFL will go to 15.

Pick: Calgary

Friday July 2

Hamilton Tiger Cats (-3) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers

There’s hope again in Hamilton since veteran QB Kevin Glenn took over for struggling sophomore Quinton Porter. The Tiger Cats now have an improved offensive line that should provide the necessary protection for Glenn to throw effectively to Arland Bruce III, Marquay McDaniel and Dave Stala.

The defense is improved with the additions of Jason Shivers and Jerome Dennis, joining sophomore Dylan Barker who showed great things in his rookie season. With Otis Floyd, Jamall Johnson and Markeith Knowlton, the Tiger Cats also boast maybe the best linebacker set in the CFL.

Under new coach Paul LaPolice and with Buck Pierce under center, there are also reasons to hope for the Blue Bombers fans. But Pierce is injury-prone and Steven Jyles might not be ready to take over on a regular basis, at least not yet.

Pick: Hamilton
