CFL Betting Recap - Week 10
VegasInsider.com

League Betting Notes

Favorites went 3-1 straight up in Week 10
Underdogs and Favorites went 2-2 against the spread in Week 10
Home teams posted a 3-1 record in Week 10
The 'over' went 3-1 in Week 10

Team Betting Notes

Saskatchewan (8-1) finally got back on track againts the spread. The Roughriders covered their first five games, but failed to cover their past three until their 48-25 win over Winnipeg (1-8). They meet the Blue Bombers again next Sunday in Manitoba.

The Roughriders have averaged 34.7 ppg, highest in the CFL. They'll have a rematch against the Blue Bombers, who have averaged 21.3 ppg, lowest in the CFL.

While Edmonton (1-8) is tied for the worst straight-up record in the CFL, the Eskimos continue to be a feisty bunch. The Esks have lost their past five games by a total of just 15 points, and they have covered three in a row.

The 'over' has also cashed in seven of Edmonton's nine games this season, the most 'overs' of any team in the CFL. They lost a 37-34 heartbreaker to Calgary (7-2) in Week 10, and will meet the Stampeders again next week at home. The 'over' is 6-3 in Calgary's nine games, so a high-scoring affair is likely yet again.

Hamilton (3-6) played a winning team for the first time in four weeks, and they were back on the losing end of things. The BC Lions (6-3) posted a 29-26 win at home, but the Ti-Cats have now covered four consecutive games.

Montreal (4-5) stopped Toronto 20-9 on Tuesday night, cashing tickets as a six-point road underdog. The victory for the Alouettes was their first back-to-back win of the season and second on the road. Toronto (5-4) has now dropped two straight games after winning four in a row. The Argonauts are now 3-3 at home.

Canadian Football League Week 10 Betting Recap
By Ian Cameron
Sportsmemo.com

Here is my recap of Week 10 in the Canadian Football League as I provide a quick hitter, team-by-team analysis of the six teams that have been in action.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-5 SU, 5-4 ATS)

Hamilton battled the BC Lions but fell short 29-26. They did however cover as 6.5-point underdogs to move to 5-4 ATS on the season. The Ticats started slowly and gradually got themselves back into the game but were victimized in the secondary on a handful of occasions by a BC offense that had been struggling of late. The offense was slowed down for the first time in weeks although maybe not surprising since they were taking a major step up in class defensively after facing the soft stop units of Winnipeg and Edmonton. That being said, there are positive the Ticats can take from the loss. They hung tough against a team that was undefeated at home and could have won the game had they made a few more plays on either side of the football. The best news for the Ticats is they will have a chance at redemption when they face the BC Lions (1-3 SU on the road) at home on Saturday.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-8 SU, 2-7 ATS)

Winnipeg still stinks. To their credit, they gave a good effort and held the lead at halftime but as soon as Saskatchewan woke up it was all Green Riders from that point of the game on. Winnipeg was dominated on both sides of the football in the third and fourth quarters to the tune of 34-7. Quarterback Justin Goltz made a few nice plays with his feet but he is still having problems as an effective passer (2 INTs in the second half). Winnipeg’s defense played decent at the start but that unit still lacks playmakers especially in their secondary and Saskatchewan exposed that deficiency. The Blue Bombers were 15-point road underdogs and somehow after a 17-14 halftime lead they failed to cover in what ended up being a lopsided 48-25 loss. There aren’t enough points that oddsmakers can offer with Winnipeg as an underdog that would appeal to me right now. This team just continues to get drilled on a weekly basis with no end in sight.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-1 SU, 6-3 ATS)

Winnipeg caught Saskatchewan by surprise in the first half but in the second half, Saskatchewan showed why they are the CFL’s best team – and why Winnipeg is the worst by a wide margin. The Roughriders throttled the Blue Bombers on both sides of the football. The offense got its well balanced, explosive attack going with quarterback Darian Durant at the controls. Running back Kory Sheets notched yet another impressive rushing performance of nearly 100 yards. The defense was its usual dominant self and is still ranked tops in the CFL with just 22.4 points per game allowed. The Roughriders remain the perfect on their home field going 4-0 SU (3-1 ATS) – the strongest home field edge in the CFL by far.

Calgary Stampeders (7-2 SU, 6-3 ATS)

Calgary thought their annual Labor Day Classic showdown against Edmonton was over after the third quarter but it wasn’t! The Stampeders took a 37-7 lead before a ridiculous rally of insane proportions took place as Edmonton scored 27 straight points to close the gap to three. The Eskimos however came up short on their potential game winning drive after turning the ball over on downs and allowing Calgary to run out the clock. The key development for Calgary in this game was the injury to quarterback Kevin Glenn who left the game and didn’t return. Bo Levi Mitchell entered and suffered from the same disease Zach Collaros had for Toronto last week – a “lack of preparation-itis.” Mitchell was incredibly impressive in his first-ever CFL start with a week to prepare for an opponent but when being asked to come in cold off the bench, he struggled to make plays in the passing game and Calgary’s offense struggled as a result. In fact, Calgary was handed many of their points by Edmonton off turnovers, mistakes and penalties so the Stampeders have no reason to feel good about this win. The Stampeders couldn’t run the football at all in this game with Jon Cornish (17 carries, 60 yards). They were lucky to get this win but may not be as fortunate against an Eskimos team that despite their 1-8 record doesn’t believe in the word “quit.”

Edmonton Eskimos (1-7 SU, 3-5 ATS)

The record is what it is. It shows that Edmonton is a 1-8 football team which is just as bad as Winnipeg. However, the Eskimos are battling their guts out in each game and have better talent across the board compared to the Blue Bombers. Edmonton is showing an enormous amount of resolve but they aren’t being rewarded for their efforts. The Eskimos have lost their last five games by 5, 1, 3, 3 and 3 points but are 4-1 ATS. The offensive line gave up a whopping seven sacks allowing QB Mike Reilly to be used a human whoopee cushion over and over again. The defense did a fine job of holding the fort but Calgary’s offense gradually wore them down in the third quarter. However, when it looked like the game was out of reach, Edmonton got their offense going as Reilly was finally afforded time to throw the football and the result was 27 straight points and nearly a monumental upset. Edmonton can take the positives of that rally as they head into Friday night’s rematch vs. Calgary. That game is likely going to be a true “do or die” scenario for the Eskimos as any hope at all of making something of this season and climbing back into the chase for a playoff spot will hinge on this game.

BC Lions (6-3 SU, 4-5 ATS)

Quarterback Travis Lulay finally had his first 300+ yard passing game of the season in BC’s 29-26 home win against Hamilton last week. The Lions defense restored some of their pride by slowing down a red hot Hamilton offense. BC was determined to win this game and they gave the kind of effort and intensity I expected from them after such a bad loss to Montreal. However, the jury is still out on whether BC can get back to elite status. I’m not convinced they are there yet and need to go out and win on the road particularly this week if they want to try and prove they are right up there with Calgary and Saskatchewan in a very tough and competitive West Division. The Lions are a perfect 5-0 SU at home this season but 1-3 SU on the road. The long west to east coast travel to Guelph assures that it won’t be an easy game.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 11
By David Schwab
VegasInsider.com

The CFL not only uses the Labor Day Weekend to mark the halfway point of its regular season, but as the front half of a unique home-and-home series that involves every team in the league. Last Friday night British Columbia got the early edge against Hamilton with a tight 29-27 victory as a five-point home favorite. Sunday's only game saw Saskatchewan clobber Winnipeg 48-25 as a 14-point favorite at home.

This past Monday, Calgary squeezed past Edmonton 37-34 as a 3½-point favorite on the road and Montreal closed-out the Holiday with a huge 20-9 win over Toronto as a five-point road underdog on Tuesday night.

The following is a brief betting preview for Week 11 in the CFL with the opening pointspread and 'over/under' lines provided by TopBet.

Friday, Sept. 6

Calgary Stampeders vs. Edmonton Eskimos

Pointspread: Calgary -3
Total: 55

Calgary's win last week kept it right in the thick of the West Division title race at 7-2 straight-up, but it fell to 6-3 against the spread after failing to cover in last week's game. The Stampeders are 3-2 SU on the road this season and 2-3 ATS with the total staying UNDER in three of the five games. They are now ranked second in the league in scoring with an average of 33.1 points a game.

The Eskimos have only won one game SU this season and are riding a seven-game losing streak into this game, but they have covered in their last three games after losing by a combined nine points. The total has gone OVER in their last six games and they have scored 27 or more points in their last five games.

This past Monday's win extended Calgary's SU winning streak in this series to five games and it is 3-2 ATS. The total has gone OVER in five of the previous seven meetings including the last three. It has also gone OVER in seven of the last nine games played in Edmonton.

Saturday, Sept. 7

British Columbia Lions vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Pointspread: BC -2
Total: 54

BC is in solid shape in the West at 6-3 SU, but after failing to cover in four of its last five games it comes into this matchup 4-5 ATS. The total went OVER the 54½-point line in last week's game and it has gone OVER in three of its four road games this year. The Lions are averaging 26.2 points a game, but allowing an average of 25.4 points on defense.

The Tiger-Cats three-game winning streak came to an end with the loss last week to BC, but at 4-5 SU on the year they are just a game back in the East Division race. They are 4-5 ATS as well and the total has stayed UNDER in all four of its previous games at home this season. Quarterback Henry Burris leads the CFL in total passing yards with 2,806.

BC has won 17 of the last 23 meetings SU, but it is just 1-6 ATS in the last seven games of this series. The total has stayed UNDER in eight of the last 10 games played in Hamilton and it has gone OVER in five of the last eight meetings overall.

Sunday, Sept. 8

Toronto Argonauts vs. Montreal Alouettes

Pointspread: Montreal -1
Total: 49

Toronto's offense looked awful in Tuesday night's loss with Zach Collaros at quarterback for an injured Ricky Ray. This followed a 14-point performance the week before in a loss to Calgary. The Argonauts are now 5-4 SU in the East and 4-5 ATS with the total staying UNDER in three of their last five games.

Tanner Marsh got the start for an injured Anthony Calvillo on Tuesday night and threw for 309 yards and a score to pace the win. The Alouettes have been able to claw their way back into the East Division race at 4-5 SU (5-4 ATS) with three SU wins in their last five games and they are 4-1 ATS during this same stretch.

The outcome of this game could very well hinge of Ray's availability for Sunday night, but Toronto's track record against its division rivals over the years is not that good. The Argonauts are 5-15 SU in the last 20 meetings and 8-17 SU in the 25 meetings in Montreal.

Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Pointspread: Saskatchewan -7
Total: 53

The Roughriders have clearly established themselves as the best team in the CFL over the first half of the season with the highest scoring offense (34.6 points) in the league complementing the stingiest defense (22.4). They are 8-1 SU and a profitable 6-3 ATS. The total has gone OVER in four of five road games this season.

Winnipeg fell to 1-8 SU and 3-6 ATS with last week's loss as its current losing streak has now reached seven games. It has failed to cover in four of its last five games and the total has gone OVER in three of those contests. The Blue Bombers are the lowest scoring team in the league (21.3 points) while allowing the most points on defense (32.8).

Saskatchewan has now won nine of the last 10 meetings SU and it is 7-3 ATS. The total has gone OVER in the last four games. It is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings and the total has gone OVER in four of the last five games played in Winnipeg.

Stampeders at Eskimos: What Bettors Need to Know
By Covers.com

Calgary Stampeders at Edmonton Eskimos (+3, 56.5)

Four days after they played a wild Labour Day Classic in Calgary, the Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos will square off again on Friday, this time in Edmonton. The Eskimos staged a dramatic comeback attempt in the fourth quarter Monday, but once again fell short as Calgary won its sixth straight meeting between the provincial rivals. Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly threw four touchdown passes in just over six minutes during the rally - the kind of production the Eskimos need in the first quarter, when they have not scored a touchdown since Week 2.

Bo Levi Mitchell took over at quarterback after Kevin Glenn left with an injury in the second quarter and Mitchell - who began the year as Calgary’s third-string option - did not disappoint, throwing two touchdowns and running for another. The Stampeders continue to find success on offence despite missing starting quarterback Drew Tate and leading receiver Nik Lewis and playing with a banged-up Jon Cornish, who is still the second-leading running back in the league despite recording only 60 yards on Monday after missing a game.

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (7-2, 6-3 ATS): Defensive linemen Charleston Hughes and Cordarro Law ran roughshod over Edmonton’s offensive line Monday, combining for five sacks. Wide receiver Maurice Price was the latest member of Calgary’s receiving corps to fill the role of Lewis, catching three touchdown passes as part of a massive 165-yard game. Slotback Marquay McDaniel was the leading receiver two weeks ago, while wide receiver Brad Sinopoli and slotback Jabari Arthur have both proven to be capable and reliable. The biggest danger for the Stampeders appears to be complacency - their relaxed play in the fourth quarter keyed the Eskimos’ comeback.

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (1-8, 4-5 ATS): Edmonton general manager Ed Hervey has instructed his coaching staff to indefinitely bench offensive lineman Simeon Rottier after Calgary sacked Reilly seven times, telling reporters “it wouldn’t bother me if [Rottier] didn’t play another down this year.” Thanks to his fantastic fourth quarter, Reilly threw for 246 yards Monday, bringing his season total to 2,277 - second in the league behind Hamilton's Henry Burris. Slotback Fred Stamps and wide receivers Cary Koch and Nate Coehoorn account for nearly 75 percent of that total. The Eskimos played Monday’s game without running back Hugh Charles (hamstring) or defensive end and team sack leader Odell Willis (shoulder), who are questionable for Friday.

TRENDS:

* Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Stampeders are 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings in Edmonton.
* Over is 7-2 in the last nine meetings in Edmonton.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Edmonton is 0-4 at home and 0-5 against West Division opponents.

2. Calgary K Rene Paredes leads the league with 106 points.

3. The Eskimos have lost their last five games by a combined 15 points and have scored 105 of their 150 points during that span in the second half.

Lions at Tiger-Cats: What Bettors Need to Know
By Covers.com

BC Lions at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-1.5, 54)

The BC Lions stayed perfect at home when they defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last week. On Saturday, the Lions will try for a rare road win when they visit the Tiger-Cats in Guelph, Ont. BC quarterback Travis Lulay carried the offense against Hamilton with his first 300-yard passing game since 2012 and will need to continue that production until running back Andrew Harris - limited to 113 rushing yards over the last three games - can regain his early season form.

Hamilton continued its recent strong run of play in Friday’s 29-26 defeat as quarterback Henry Burris added to his league-leading passing yards total by tossing for another 352. The Tiger-Cats’ biggest issue was their slow start as they failed to record a first down until the second quarter. Hamilton has looked even better at home, including a 37-14 rout of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Week 9, as it grows more comfortable playing at Alumni Stadium.

ABOUT THE LIONS (6-3): Harris is fourth in the league with 572 rushing yards. Linebacker Adam Bighill leads the defense with 43 tackles despite missing time with a sprained ankle. Linebacker Solomon Elimimian has 42 tackles to go with two interceptions, while Bighill also has three sacks to lead a strong BC defense. Defensive ends Khreem Smith and Brandon Jordan each have four sacks. Lulay’s favorite target is wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux, who has caught 30 passes for a team-leading 614 yards and four touchdowns.

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (4-5): Burris has thrown for 632 yards to wide receiver Greg Ellingson, 583 to Bakari Grant and 394 to Samuel Giguere. Andy Fantuz, who missed significant time due to injury, has 320 receiving yards. Running back C.J Gable has 306 yards on the season after battling injuries early on. Hamilton’s defense is led by defensive lineman Brandon Boudreaux, who has four sacks. The Tiger-Cats have made only four interceptions, but their run defense has improved - they have not surrendered more than 100 rushing yards in a game since a Week 5 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders

TRENDS:

* Lions are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road games.
* Tiger-Cats are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 Saturday games.
* Under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings in Hamilton.
* Lions are 1-6 ATS in their last seven meetings.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Hamilton is 1-4 against West Division opponents. The Lions are 1-3 on the road.

2. Lions veteran K Paul McCallum completed a pass for 12 yards on a fake punt in Week 9.

3. The Tiger-Cats will wear uniforms commemorating the Hamilton Flying Wildcats, a football team formed in 1941. The Flying Wildcats won the Grey Cup in 1943 and merged with the defunct Hamilton Tigers in 1950 to form the Tiger-Cats.
