CFL Week 16 Preview
By: David Schwab

Tiger-Cats visit Argonauts

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats face off against the East Division rival Toronto Argonauts in a game that has major playoff implications for both teams. This Week 16 matchup is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 15 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. (PT).

Hamilton is coming off a huge 36-11 win over Edmonton that not only snapped a two-game losing streak but kept it tied with Toronto for the fourth seed in the playoffs. The Tiger-Cats covered spread as a six-point home favorite and the total stayed ‘under’ the 52-point line.

The win moved their record on the year to 7-7 both SU and ATS. Hamilton is 3-4 SU and ATS in its last seven games on the road. The CFL betting total has been evenly split in its last 10 games with five games staying ‘under’ and five games going ‘over.’

Toronto is basically a carbon copy of the Tiger-Cats in terms of its current record. The Argonauts are also coming off a huge win last week that snapped a two-game losing streak and kept them tied with the Tiger-Cats for second place in the division. Their win was a bit more impressive as they upended Saskatchewan 24-19 as an 11 ½- point road underdog. The total stayed ‘under’ the 49-point line. This win moved Toronto to 7-7 both SU and ATS on the year. The Argos are 4-3 SU and ATS in its last seven games at home. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of their last 10 games overall.

This will be the third and final meeting between these two teams in the regular season. Hamilton pounded out a 16-12 win in Week 8 as three-point road underdog. The total stayed well ‘under’ the 53 ½-point line. The Tiger-Cats needed a late-game rally to pull out the win as they trailed for most of the game. RB DeAndra Cobb’s six yard TD run with less than four minutes left to play capped off a 13-point fourth quarter that gave the Cats the improbable win.

Two weeks later it was Hamilton that got the best of it again with a 28-13 victory as a four-point home favorite. The total stayed ‘under’ once again as the line was set at 50 points. Unlike the first game, the Tiger-Cats built a 20-6 lead at the half that they never relinquished. Hamilton QB Kevin Glenn was the star this time around, completing 27-of-33 attempts for 313 yards and a score. Markeith Knowlton’s blocked punt that he recovered in the end zone for touchdown also helped the Ticats’ cause.

This game has major implications for the playoffs with both teams currently tied for the fourth spot at 7-7. Hamilton already owns the tiebreaker in this series by virtue of its first two wins, but the winner of this game can take a two-point lead and a step closer to locking up a home game in the opening round of the CFL postseason.

BetED.com opened the Tiger-Cats as a 1 ½-point CFL odds favorite and the ‘over/under’ line is set at 49 ½.

The Tiger-Cats have won four out of the last five games between these two SU and ATS, but the Argonauts have a bit of momentum on their side after the big road victory over the Roughriders last week. Look for them to carry that into this game to come away with a win and avoid the season sweep.

Eskimos try luck in BC

The Edmonton Eskimos have a chance to put themselves back into the postseason picture when they take on the West Division rival British Columbia Lions. This Week 16 matchup is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 16 at Empire Field in Vancouver. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (PT).

Edmonton’s 36-11 loss to Hamilton last week has officially put its chances to reach the postseason on life support. The Eskimos failed to cover as a six-point road underdog and the total stayed ‘under’ the 52-point line. The loss leaves them at 4-10 straight-up for the year and 5-9 against the spread.

Edmonton is currently in last place in the West Division and two points behind BC for the final playoff spot. The Eskimos are 1-6 SU and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games played on the road. The total has gone ‘over’ in six out of their last 10 games overall.

BC did nothing to improve its playoff position with a heartbreaking OT 47-35 loss to Winnipeg last week as a 2 ½-point road underdog. The total went well ‘over’ the 50-point line in this shootout.

The loss dropped the Lions to 5-9 both SU and ATS for the year. They are currently in third place in the West and four points in back of Hamilton and Toronto for the fourth seed in the playoffs. Hamilton is 2-5 both SU and ATS at home this season. The total has gone ‘over’ in six of its last 10 games overall.

This will be the third and final meeting between these two teams in the regular season. BC coasted to a 25-10 win in the season opener as a four-point road underdog. The Lions got the victory by riding the leg of K Paul McCallum, who booted six field goals to score the majority of the points. RB Jamal Robertson scored the only touchdown for BC on a 61-yard scamper midway through the second quarter.

Edmonton evened the season series at a game apiece with a 28-25 win in Week 5 as a two-point CFL spread favorite at home. The total went ‘over’ the 52 ½-point line by just half a point. The key play in this game was a nine-yard touchdown pass from Ricky Ray to Andre Talbot with less than five minutes left to play to put the Eskimos up by three. This game was actually Edmonton’s first win of the season after starting the year 0-4.

It is safe to say that the loser of this game will be on the outside looking as far as the postseason so there is added pressure on both teams to come up with a win in the series tiebreaker.

BetED.com has opened the Lions as a 4 ½-point favorite and set the CFL odds 'total at 52. Head-to-head these teams have evenly split the last 10 games SU, but BC has a slight 5-4-1 advantage ATS. It also won the three game series last year two games to one both SU and ATS. The home team is 1-7 SU in the last eight meetings and 1-4 ATS in the last five. BC has played better on the road this season so home field is not really an advantage. Take the Eskimos to battle the Lions to the bitter end in this one and cover the 4 ½ points.

Winnipeg visits Montreal Alouettes

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be trying to win back-to-back games for the first time this season when they tangle with the Montreal Alouettes in an East Division clash. This Week 16 matchup is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 17 at Percival-Molson Memorial Stadium in Montreal with kickoff set for 10 a.m. (PT).

Last week, Winnipeg kept its slim playoff chances alive with a crucial 47-35 win over the team currently holding the last playoff spot, the BC Lions. The Blue Bombers easily covered as a 2 ½-point home favorite and the total went way ‘over’ the 50-point line.

The victory also moved their record on the year to 4-10 straight-up and 8-6 against the CFL spread. Winnipeg is in last place in the East Division, but could still earn a crossover spot in the postseason if it can finish ahead of Edmonton and BC. The main problem for the Bombers this season has been playing away from home as they are 0-7 SU and 3-4 ATS on the road. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of their last six games overall.

Montreal made a statement last week by knocking off the best team in the West, the Calgary Stampeders, 46-19, after losing to the same team the week before 46-21. In the first game, the Alouettes failed to cover as a three-point road underdog, but last week they easily covered as a 3 ½-point home favorite. Both games went well 'over' the line.

Montreal is now tied with Calgary for the best record in the league and leads Hamilton and Toronto in the East Division by a comfortable six points. The Alouettes are 10-4 SU on the year and 7-7 ATS. They are also 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS at home this season. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of their last eight games.

This will be the third and final meeting between these two teams in the regular season. Montreal cruised to a 39-17 win in Week 8 as an 11 ½-point home favorite and the total was a ‘push’ at 56. QB Anthony Calvillo led the Alouettes to a 24-0 lead late in the second quarter, but was knocked out of the game with a bruised sternum. He actually ended up missing the next couple of games in which Montreal really struggled in his absence.

Calvillo was back for Game 2 of this series in Week 13 and led the Alouettes to a 44-40 come-from-behind victory over Winnipeg. The big play of the game was a 48-yard touchdown pass to Brian Batton with a little over a minute left to play in the game to give Montreal the lead for good. The Bombers covered in this game as a five-point home underdog and the total went ‘over’ the 52 ½-point line. Calvillo ended the night completing 36-of-54 attempts for 477 yards and five TD’s, while Winnipeg QB Steven Jyles completed 18-of-31 attempts for 328 yards and four TD’s in this aerial onslaught.

Sportsinteraction.com has opened Montreal as a 12 ½-point favorite and the ‘over/under’ line is currently set at 57 ½. The Alouettes have won eight out of the last nine games between these two teams SU and are 4-2 ATS in the last six. Montreal’s average margin of victory over the Bombers in the last three games played at home has been by 24.7 points so covering a 12 ½-point spread in this game should be no problem for the Alouettes.

Stampeders at Roughriders

The lead in the West Division is on the line when the Calgary Stampeders take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders in a classic battle between two of the best teams in the league. This Week 16 matchup is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 17 at Mosaic Stadium in Regina SK. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. (PT).

This will be the third straight big game for Calgary after wrapping up a home-and-home series last week with East Division leader Montreal. In Game 1 the Stampeders easily handled the Alouettes 46-21 at home as a three-point favorite. The total went well ‘over’ the 56 ½-point line.

Last week, Montreal turned the tables with an equally dominating 46-19 win in its home stadium. Calgary came nowhere close to covering as a 3 ½-point road underdog and the total went ‘over’ again with the line set at 56.

Calgary is now 10-4 straight-up on the year and 9-5 against the CFL spread and in first place in the West. The Stampeders are 4-3 both SU and ATS on the road and the total has gone ‘over’ in seven of their last eight games overall.

Saskatchewan is still trying to figure out how it lost to Toronto 24-19 last week as an 11 ½-point home favorite. The total stayed ‘under’ the 49-point line. The loss dropped the Roughriders’ overall record to 9-5 SU and 8-6 ATS. They are currently two points behind Calgary for the top spot in the West and that all-important first round bye in the playoffs. Saskatchewan is 6-1 SU at home this season and 4-3 ATS. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of its last nine games overall.

This will be the third and final meeting between these two teams in the regular season. Calgary coasted to a 40-20 victory in Week 4 as a 2 ½-home favorite and the total went ‘over’ the 55 ½-point line. Stampeders QB Henry Burris completed 22-of-33 attempts for 285 yards and four TD’s and WR Romby Bryant caught seven balls for 116 yards and two TD’s in the win.

Saskatchewan evened the series at one game apiece with a thrilling 43-37 victory in overtime in Week 12. The Roughriders covered as a 3 ½-point home underdog and the total went well ‘over’ the 54 ½-point line. It was Saskatchewan QB Darian Durant’s turn to shine as he completed 23-of-39 attempts for 500 yards and two TD’s. His favorite target was WR Andy Fantuz, who had 10 receptions for 255 yards and one TD.

Sportsinteraction.com has opened the Roughriders as a two-point CFL odds favorite in this game and the ‘over/under’ line is set at 58. Saskatchewan has won four out of the last five games between these two teams both SU and ATS. The ‘Riders average margin of victory over Calgary in the last three games played at home has been by 10.7 points, but with so much at stake this game will be much closer than that.

Expect another high-scoring affair with Burris outdueling Durant for the upset win on the road.
