CFL Betting Notes - Week 19
By David Schwab
VegasInsider.com

We have reached the final week of the CFL regular season and the playoff picture is just about set. Last Friday night, British Columbia dropped a meaningless 41-21 decision to Calgary as three-point road underdog considering it had already clinched the West Division and first-round bye.

Hamilton kept its playoff hopes alive with Saturday’s 28-18 victory over Winnipeg as a 4½ point home favorite in the early game and Toronto secured its spot in the postseason with a 31-26 win over Saskatchewan later that day as a 5½ point underdog on the road. Edmonton’s 27-25 loss on Sunday as a 4½ point road underdog against Montreal, delayed any playoff berth celebration until possibly this weekend.

The following is brief preview of Week 19 in the CFL along with the opening point spread and ‘over/under’ lines as provided by 5Dimes.

Thursday, Nov. 1

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-6) vs. Toronto Argonauts Total: 52

Hamilton needs a win in this game coupled with an Edmonton loss to make it into the postseason. It is 6-11 overall both straight-up and against the spread but just 1-7 SU (4-4 ATS) on the road. Toronto comes into this final regular-season game with an overall record of 8-9 SU and ATS and a 3-5 SU (2-6 ATS) at home. The total has stayed UNDER in four of its last six games.

These two have already split their first two games this season with each winning at home both SU and ATS. The Argonauts already know that they will be on the road for the Divisional Semi-Final Round of the playoffs so it may be tempted to rest its starters, especially since they might end-up playing the Tiger-Cats the following week.

Friday, Nov.2

Calgary Stampeders vs. Edmonton Eskimos (OFF) Total: OFF

A win this week will do nothing for Calgary’s position in the playoffs as it has already clinched a home game for the first round with an overall record of 11-6 both SU and ATS. Edmonton knows that a win means it is in the postseason as a crossover team from the West Division. It comes in at 7-10 SU but is 10-7 ATS. The Eskimos are 5-3 SU at home and 6-2 ATS.

Edmonton has to hope that Calgary decides to rest its starters for this game, considering that have lost the first three meetings this season SU and are 1-2 ATS. Another concern has to be the health of its quarterback Steven Jyles, who remains questionable for Friday with an injured calf.

Saturday, Nov. 3

Montreal Alouettes vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1½) Total: 50

Montreal’s win last week raised its record to 11-6 SU but since it did not cover it is now 8-9 ATS. The Alouettes are just 4-4 on the road this season both SU and ATS. Winnipeg has to be happy to see this season finally come to a close after stumbling to a 3-7 SU record over its last 10 games. Overall, it is 5-12 SU but a respectable 8-9 ATS.

The Alouettes are another team that should be clearing the bench in Saturday’s game in an effort to stay healthy for a run to the Grey Cup title. They have a 2-1 edge over the Blue Bombers this season both SU and ATS and beat them 36-26 as two-point favorites in their last trip to Winnipeg. Bomber quarterback Buck Pierce is currently ‘doubtful’ for this game with a shoulder injury.

Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. British Columbia Lions (-3) Total: 46

Saskatchewan is in the playoffs but will have to wait and see where it will be playing its first game depending on what happens this weekend. It is 8-9 both SU and ATS overall and 3-5 SU and ATS on the road. BC rested most of its starters last week and will probably do the same this time around as well. It is 12-5 SU overall but just 8-9 ATS.

The Roughriders come into this matchup as one of the healthiest teams in the league, but the same cannot be said about BC. Quarterback Travis Lulay is still nicked-up with a shoulder injury and wide receiver Marco Iannuzzi is questionable with a concussion. The Lions have already lost to Saskatchewan two of three this season SU and are 1-2 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in all three games.

CFL's Week 19 Preview
By Covers.com

It’s Week 19 in the CFL and that means playoffs are right around the corner. Some teams are still battling for their playoff lives, while others have already clinched and plan to rest their starters before playoffs begin next week.

Calgary at Edmonton (Odds N/A)

The Eskimos control their own destiny when they host the Stampeders on Friday. It's simple. A win and they’re in. Head coach Kavis Reed hinted to the media that veteran QB Kerry Joseph will start the pivotal game in favor of Matt Nichols, who nearly pulled off an upset over Montreal last week. Edmonton has dropped all three games to Calgary this season.

The Stamps have nothing on the line this week, having already clinched second place in the West Division no matter what happens. Drew Tate will start his first game at QB since being sidelined with a shoulder injury in Week 2. But Calgary coach John Hufnagel has said Kevin Glenn will also get a few snaps to keep sharp. Top receiver Nik Lewis will sit out as the Stamps seek a fourth straight win. The Stampeders are 4-1 ATS in their last five games in Edmonton.

Montreal at Winnipeg (1, 49.5)

Alouettes backup QB Adrian McPherson will play the entire game to give first-stringer Anthony Calvillo gets some much needed rest. Montreal has locked up the East and is expected to sideline many of its starters for this one.

Winnipeg is playing for (no) pride having already been eliminated from playoff contention. Quarterback Buck Pierce (shoulder) is out once again and backup Joey Elliott (knee) is questionable. That means third-stringer Alex Brink could start at QB in the final game ever to be played at Canad Inns Stadium. Montreal is 1-4 ATS in its last five trips to Winnipeg.

Saskatchewan at B.C. (-3.5, 46)

The Roughriders will know prior to their game Saturday if they absolutely need to win to make the playoffs and if they’re going to remain in the West or cross over to play the Argos in the Eastern semi-final. Saskatchewan has dropped three straight and QB Darian Durant is expected to sit with Drew Willy guiding the offense.

The Lions have first place in the West all wrapped up but head coach Mike Benevides still wants to get at least some reps for starting QB Travis Lulay, who missed a couple games with a sore throwing shoulder. The teams have played under the total in their last five meetings.

CFL Week 19

Hamilton (6-11) @ Toronto (8-9) -- Argonauts (+5) lost 36-27 at Hamilton back in Week 4, then beat TiCats in consecutive weeks, 33-30 (+3.5) on road, 35-31 (-3) in Rogers Centre in weeks 10-11. Toronto snapped a 1-5 skid with 31-26 upset win at Saskatchewan last week- they've lost five of last seven home games (0-7 vs spread), and allowed 33.3 ppg in last four games. TiCats are 1-7 on road, covering just one of last six on foreign soil- they've covered three of nine when favored this season. Over is 12-5 in Hamilton games this season.

Calgary (11-6) @ Edmonton (7-10) -- Stampeders are more interested in getting ready for playoffs, but this is still rivalry, one which Calgary won first three meetings this year: 31-30 (-3.5) at home in Week 10, 20-18 (+2.5) on road the next week, then 39-15 (-5.5) at home three weeks after that. Calgary won last three games overall, scoring 32-34-41 points and four of last six on road- they’ve scored 32+ points in each of last five wins. Eskimos lost seven of last nine games but covered three of last four- their 21-point rally in 4th quarter fell just short in 27-25 loss at Montreal last week. Four of last five Edmonton games went over total; over is 4-1-1 in last six Calgary games.

Montreal (11-6) @ Winnipeg (5-12) -- Been lost season for Bombers, but they’ve split last six games after 2-10 start, including 27-22 win at Montreal four weeks ago as 13-point underdog; Alouettes won first two meetings, 41-30 (-6.5) at home in Week 2, 36-26 (-1.5) here four weeks after that. Montreal won last three games, scoring 27-34-27 points; they’re 4-4 on road, 2-1 as road favorites. Winnipeg is 3-5 at home, 5-2 vs spread as road underdogs- their last four losses were all by 10+ points. Under is 6-1-1 in last eight Winnipeg games, 5-2 in Alouettes’ last seven. Montreal is another team looking ahead to playoffs.

Saskatchewan (8-9) @ British Columbia (12-5) -- Lions expected to rest some starters here; they’ve won last five home games (4-1 vs spread) by average score of 32-16. Home side won all three series games this year; Roughriders lost 24-5 (+6.5) here in Week 8, but beat BC twice at home in Regina, 23-20 (+2.5) in Week 3, 27-21 (+2.5) five weeks ago. Streaky Riders’ season has gone 4W-4L-2W-L-3W-3L, so they’re in funk now, allowing 37-34-31 points in last three games. BC is 10-1 when it allowed 23 or less points, 2-4 when it allows more. Over is 4-1-1 in last six Saskatchewan games.

Home (37-31). Favorites (29-38), Over (33-33-2). West 20-12 vs East. Home underdogs are 12-5 in the CFL this season.
