League Betting Notes

Favorites went 4-0 straight up in Week 18
Favorites went 2-1-1 against the spread in Week 18
Home teams posted a 4-0 record in Week 18
The 'over' and 'under' went 2-2 in Week 18

Team Betting Notes

The BC Lions (10-7) put the brakes on a three-game losing streak, tripping up Edmonton (3-14) by a 43-29 score. It was the first time the Lions covered since Sept. 27, breaking an 0-3 ATS slide, and it was their first home cover since Sept. 15.

The 'over' continues to be a very popular play in Edmonton games. While the 'under' had cashed in each of their past two games, the 'over' is 4-2 in their past six games, 6-1 in their past seven road games, and 10-4 in their past 14 games overall.

Edmonton's loss dropped them to 0-9 inside the West Division. They have one last chance to erase that goose egg in the final game Nov. 2 at Saskatchewan. They lost 14-9 at Saskatchewan in the last meeting Oct. 12, and they're 0-3 SU against the Roughriders this season. However, they are 2-1 ATS vs. Saskatchewan in 2013.

Toronto (11-6) clinched the East Division with a resounding 36-21 win against Winnipeg (3-14). The Argonauts have won back-to-back games heading into their season finale at home against Montreal. The game also went 'over', snapping a string of three consecutive 'unders' for the Boatmen.

The Blue Bombers haven't necessarily been mailing it in, but they have now lost six of their past seven games straight-up, and they are just 1-5-1 ATS during the span. They wrap up their disappointing season against Hamilton Nov. 2. The Blue Bombers are 0-3 SU and 1-2 ATS against the Ti-Cats this season.

Hamilton (8-9) posted a win against Montreal (7-10), but the Ti-Cats were unable to cover. The Ti-Cats are went 2-1 SU against the Alouettes this season, but they failed to cover all three times.

It wasn't easy, but Calgary (14-3) won its fifth consecutive game Saturday night against Saskatchewan (11-6). These two Western powers are likely to see each other again in the postseason. The Stamps went 2-1 SU against the Roughriders and 1-1-1 ATS, with the 'over' cashed in two of the three meetings.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 19
By David Schwab
VegasInsider.com

The CFL heads into the final week of the regular season with the playoff picture set for the upcoming quest for this year's Grey Cup title. Toronto locked-up the East Division title and first round bye with last Thursday night's 36-21 victory over Winnipeg as a 10½-point home favorite. On Friday night, British Columbia rolled over Edmonton 43-29 as a seven-point favorite at home, but the Lions will still have to go on the road for a first round showdown against Saskatchewan in the West.

Hamilton secured home field advantage for its upcoming first round clash against Montreal in the East by beating the Alouettes 27-24 as a 5½-point home favorite in the first of two Saturday games. Calgary secured the West Division title and first round bye in the nightcap by beating Saskatchewan 29-25 in a game that ended as a PUSH.

The following is a brief betting preview for this week's games in the CFL with the opening pointspread and 'over/under' lines provided by TopBet.

Friday, Nov. 1

Montreal Alouettes vs. Toronto Argonauts

Pointspread: Toronto -2½
Total: 53

Montreal comes into this final game guaranteed to have a losing record on the year after going 7-10 straight-up in its first 17 games. It has been slightly better against the spread at 10-7 and the UNDER on the total line has a slight 9-8 edge in the 17 games. The Alouettes are 3-3 SU in their last six games and a profitable 5-1 ATS.

The Argonauts' victory over Winnipeg last week in the back-end of a home-and-home sweep raised their overall record to 11-6 SU on the year. They are 9-7-1 ATS and the total has gone OVER in 10 of the 17 games. The good news for the defending Grey Cup champs is the return of Ricky Ray to the lineup. He is ranked fourth in the CFL in both passing yards (2,878) and touchdown throws (21) despite missing several games due to injury.

Toronto has a 2-1 edge both SU and ATS in this season's series with the road team winning all three games. The total went OVER the last time they met after staying UNDER in the previous seven meetings dating back to the 2011 season.

Calgary Stampeders vs. British Columbia Lions

Pointspread: BC -1
Total: 51

Calgary remains the cream of the crop in the CFL heading into the playoffs. It has the best record in the league at 14-3 SU (11-5-1 ATS) and it is currently riding a five-game winning streak into the final regular season game of the year. The Stampeders are the highest scoring team in the CFL with an average of 31.9 points a game and second in points allowed (22.8).

The Lions snapped a three-game losing streak with last week's win over Edmonton. They are now 10-7 SU on the year with an 8-9 record ATS. BC has gone 2-3 ATS in its last five games with the total going OVER in three of those contests. Quarterback Travis Lulay remains questionable for Friday's game after missing the last several games with a shoulder injury.

The home team in this series has won all three meetings this season both SU and ATS, with the total going OVER in two of the three games. The last time they met, Calgary rolled to a 40-26 victory on Oct. 11 as a 6 ½ -point home favorite. The total went OVER the 53 ½-point line.

Saturday, Nov. 2

Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Pointspread: Hamilton -2
Total: 52½

Hamilton has now won three of its last four games to climb to 9-8 SU on the year. It went 2-2 ATS during this stretch with the total staying UNDER in all four contests. The Tiger-Cats are 8-9 ATS overall and 5-3 ATS on the road. The total has stayed UNDER in 11 of their 17 games this year.

The Blue Bombers have only managed three SU wins this season against 14 losses and they are only slightly better ATS at 5-11-1. They are 1-6-1 ATS at home this season and the total has gone OVER in four of their last six games. Winnipeg remains the lowest scoring team in the CFL with an average of 20.8 points a game.

These two have met three times this season with Hamilton winning all three contests SU. It failed to cover in the first meeting, but it has outscored the Blue Bombers a combined 74-32 in the last two contests. The total has stayed UNDER in two of the three games this season and in seven of the last 10 meetings dating back to 2011.

Edmonton Eskimos vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders

Pointspread: Saskatchewan -4
Total: 52½

Edmonton secured a firm grasp on last place in the West Division with a 3-14 SU record through its first 17 games, but it has still remained competitive with a 7-10 record ATS. It is 5-3 ATS on the road this season and the total has gone OVER in 11 of its 17 games. The Eskimos are 1-4 ATS in their last five games and the total has gone OVER in four of their last six games.

The Roughriders had a rough go of it during the month of September with four losses both SU and ATS, but they have turned things around this past month with a 3-1 SU (2-1-1 ATS) record in their last four games. The total has stayed UNDER in Saskatchewan's last six games behind a defense that is ranked first in the CFL in points allowed (21.6).

Saskatchewan will be going for the season sweep this Saturday after beating the Eskimos SU in the first three meetings. Edmonton has a 2-1 edge ATS and the total has gone OVER in two of the three games. The Eskimos are actually 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

CFL Week 19 Betting Preview
By Mike Pickett
Oddsshark.com

The Canadian Football League will wrap up its regular-season slate on Friday and Saturday this week as six teams tune up for the playoffs. Here's a look at the four CFL betting matchups on tap this weekend in Toronto, B.C., Winnipeg, and Saskatchewan.

Montreal at Toronto

Last 10 Meetings: Toronto 4-6 SU, 5-5 ATS | OU 3-7

The Argonauts are 2-1 both SU and ATS against the Alouettes so far this year as the Eastern clubs close out their regular-season schedule on Friday night. Seven of the last eight games between the two teams have turned into UNDER results for totals bettors at the sportsbooks, although their last meeting on September 8 saw the combined score of the 37-30 Toronto win go OVER the game's posted total.

Calgary at B.C.

Last 10 Meetings: B.C. 5-5 SU, 4-6 ATS | OU 6-4

The Stampeders are 2-1 both SU and ATS against the Lions so far this season as those teams prepare to meet in Vancouver on Friday night, with two of those three matchups turning out to be OVER results for totals bettors. In their lone meeting in B.C. back in August, however, the Lions managed to pull out a 26-22 home win as a 3.5-point favorite on the CFL betting lines at the sportsbooks.

Hamilton at Winnipeg

Last 10 Meetings: Winnipeg 6-4 SU, 6-3-1 ATS | OU 3-7

The Tiger-Cats are a perfect 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS against the Blue Bombers so far this season, with two of those three games turning out to be UNDER results at the sportsbooks. When the teams last met in Winnipeg back on August 16 the Tiger-Cats cruised to a 37-18 road victory as a 4-point favorite on the odds in an OVER result for totals bettors; the OVER/UNDER, though, is 1-4 in their past five meetings.

Edmonton at Saskatchewan

Last 10 Meetings: Saskatchewan 5-5 SU, 4-6 ATS | OU 6-4

The Roughriders will be looking for their fourth straight SU win over the Eskimos on Saturday as those Western clubs close out the CFL's regular-season schedule. The Riders are 3-0 SU but just 1-2 ATS against the Eskimos so far in 2013, with the OVER paying out for totals bettors in four of their last five meetings. The Eskimos will finish in last place in the West division and miss the playoffs this year.

CFL Friday: What Bettors Need to Know
By Covers.com

Montreal Alouettes at Toronto Argonauts (-3, 53)

Their playoff positions in the East Division are already set, but the Toronto Argonauts and the Montreal Alouettes still have much to play for Friday night. The Argonauts need a victory to finish the regular season with a winning record at home, while the Alouettes can earn a split in the season series with their second win in Toronto. Montreal, which won 20-9 in its last visit, is coming off a heartbreaking road loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and could use a victory to end its tumultuous season that saw its coach fired and star quarterback lost for the season.

The Argonauts offense is healthy again now that quarterback Ricky Ray and running back Chad Kackert have returned. Ray threw for a career-high 505 yards last week and has the CFL record for completion percentage (77.2), but Toronto will rest the veteran Friday with the division already clinched. Backup quarterback Zach Collaros will need to be smart against an Alouettes' defense that leads the league in interceptions with 24 and allows the fewest passing yards per game in the East Division by a wide margin.

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (7-10): Slotback S.J. Green made a spectacular one-handed catch against Hamilton last week, putting an exclamation mark on a season that already includes career-highs in receiving yards (1,183) and touchdown catches (13). Green and Duron Carter provide great targets for new quarterback Troy Smith, who has taken over the starting job with his strong throwing arm that has created touchdown passes of more than 60 yards in each of his first two starts. Smith does have accuracy issues - completing 45-of-86 passes - and tends to slow down in the second half, but that should not overshadow the promising start to what could be a long CFL career.

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (11-6): Slotback Chad Owens is 21 receiving yards away from reaching 1,000 for the second straight season, while leading the league with 2,298 total combined yards despite missing time due to injuries. Toronto signed linebacker Aaron Maybin - a former first-round pick of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills in 2009 - to bolster its defense, which is second-worst in the league with 38 sacks. Ray was named offensive player of the week for his performance against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, which included a team-record 21 consecutive completions.

TRENDS:

* Under is 7-1 in the last eight meetings.
* Alouettes are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 meetings in Toronto.
* Alouettes are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games.
* Argonauts are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Alouettes LB Chip Cox and Argonauts LB Robert McCune are the top two tacklers in the league. Cox has 109 tackles, while McCune has 99.

2. Montreal allows 253.8 passing yards per game; Toronto allows a league-worst 304.2.

3. The Alouettes will head back to Guelph, Ont., to face Hamilton in the East Semifinal on Nov. 10, with Toronto awaiting the winner at home a week later.

Calgary Stampeders at BC Lions (Pick, 52.5)

The BC Lions can’t advance in the West Division standings, but they have pride to play for when they finish their regular season at home against the division-leading Calgary Stampeders on Friday. The Lions are 7-1 at home and can tie Calgary for the best home record in the league with a victory, while the Stampeders are looking for their sixth straight win. Quarterback Kevin Glenn started Calgary’s last game, but Drew Tate finished it and looks to have regained his spot atop the depth chart.

Quarterback Buck Pierce provided the spark that snapped the Lions out of their three-game losing streak last week, tossing three touchdown passes against the Edmonton Eskimos in his first real action with BC since being traded. With Travis Lulay still nursing a shoulder injury and backup Thomas DeMarco struggling, the Lions will need Pierce’s veteran leadership if they hope to make a dent in the playoffs. A strong performance against the Stampeders, who have one of the top defenses in the league, would go a long way to giving BC some confidence heading into the postseason.

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (14-3): Defensive lineman Charleston Hughes and running back Jon Cornish were both named players of the week. Hughes received defensive honours for his three-sack performance, which vaulted him into the league lead with 18 - one shy of the team record - while Cornish was named Canadian player of the week for the seventh time in 2013 after adding to his league-leading rushing yards total of 1,799. Slotback Marquay McDaniel reached 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in his fifth CFL season and has a career-high eight touchdown catches to go with one touchdown run.

ABOUT THE LIONS (10-7): Pierce is 17-for-27 since arriving back in BC and has targets such as slotback Nick Moore, who reached 1,000 receiving yards for the first time and has replaced Geroy Simon as the Lions’ top option in the air. Linebacker Adam Bighill has had another stellar season with a team-leading 89 tackles and eight sacks despite missing time early on due to injuries. Cornerback Cord Parks has six interceptions - one behind league-leader Geoff Tisdale of Montreal.

TRENDS:

* Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Stampeders are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 meetings in BC.
* Over is 7-1 in Lions last eight Friday games.
* Stampeders are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Calgary leads the league with 61 sacks. The Stampeders and Lions are two of three teams to limit their opponents to fewer than 100 rushing yards per contest.

2. BC is second-last in the league in passing yards with 4,217.

3. Calgary is 7-2 against West Division foes, while the Lions are 5-4.

Saturday's CFL Action: What Bettors Need to Know
Covers.com

Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+2, 52)

After clinching home-field advantage in the East Semifinal with last week’s victory, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats close their regular season with a visit to the lowly Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday. Hamilton has defeated the Blue Bombers three times this season, including a 37-18 rout at Investors Group Field, where Winnipeg is just 1-7. The Tiger-Cats, led by quarterback Henry Burris and running back C.J. Gable, have a 7-2 record against East Division opponents and have won three of their last four games.

The Blue Bombers are beginning to look towards next season, assessing which players they will hang onto as they try to rebuild from a dismal 2013 campaign. Mike Sims-Walker, a recent addition to Winnipeg’s receiving corps, provided reason for hope with a solid debut performance (eight catches, 137 yards), but the question of who will be throwing the ball to him next year remains unanswered. Quarterback Max Hall will start for the Blue Bombers on Saturday, but a completion percentage under 60 and nine interceptions to nine touchdown throws, Hall’s position for next season is tenuous at best.

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (9-8): Kick-returner Brandon Banks was named special teams player of the week after recording 210 combined return yards, including a 107-yard missed field goal return touchdown. Burris is 212 passing yards short of reaching 5,000 for the second straight season and third time in his CFL career. Of bigger concern for Hamilton than its offence is its defence, which has just 33 sacks and has allowed a league-worst 35 passing touchdowns.

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (3-14): Running back Will Ford’s role has increased from kick-returning to start the season and Ford is now 10 yards away from leading Winnipeg in rushing with 571 to go with 1,047 return yards. Linebacker Henoc Muamba leads the team with 97 tackles, as well as 18 special teams tackles. The Blue Bombers defence is vulnerable against the pass, allowing a league-worst eight 300-yard passing games.

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Over is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings in Winnipeg.
* Tiger-Cats are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games.
* Blue Bombers are 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight home games.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. The Tiger-Cats and Blue Bombers are tied at the bottom of the league with 12 interceptions apiece.

2. Hamilton WR Bakari Grant is 53 receiving yards away from reaching 1,000 for the first time in his three CFL seasons.

3. Hamilton, which has played in Guelph all season, will open its new stadium next year hoping its inaugural year goes better than Winnipeg’s first season at Investors Group Field.

Edmonton Eskimos at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-4.5, 52)

Even though their season is lost, the Edmonton Eskimos would like nothing more than to end it with one win against a West Division opponent. The Eskimos will have that opportunity when they visit the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday. Edmonton is 0-9 against divisional foes and is mired in a five-game losing skid, while Saskatchewan has defeated the Eskimos all three times the teams have faced each other this year.

The Roughriders are stumbling into the playoffs with a 3-5 record in their last eight games, raising questions about their mental toughness following a franchise-best 8-0 start to the year. Defensive back Dwight Anderson went so far as to claim “Calgary sucks” after the Stampeders defeated Saskatchewan last week to secure top spot in the West Division, which seemed like the Roughriders’ to lose not too long ago. Anderson and Saskatchewan’s league-best defence will need to play its best in the playoffs, and it will have a perfect opportunity to build confidence against Edmonton’s inconsistent offence.

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (3-14): Slotback Adarius Bowman is in top form after returning from a knee injury suffered last year, recording 199 receiving yards last week - the most by any receiver this season. “It would’ve been a lot better to be talking about it if we got the win, but personally it feels good. Just to know the leg is doing good,” Bowman said after the game. Despite missing most of the season, Bowman is only behind slotback Fred Stamps for the team receiving yards lead.

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (11-6): Quarterback Darian Durant reached 4,000 passing yards for the third time in his career while also setting a new career-high with 31 touchdown tosses, throwing 16 of them to slotbacks Chris Getzlaf and Weston Dressler, both of whom have caught over 1,000 yards this season. Running back Kory Sheets is 201 rushing yards behind Jon Cornish of the Stampeders for the league-lead. Saskatchewan is 8-0 this season when Sheets rushes for more than 100 yards in a game.

TRENDS:

* Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Eskimos are 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings.
* Eskimos are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
* Under is 6-0 in Roughriders last six games overall.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Stamps leads the league with 1,259 receiving yards.

2. Saskatchewan is 6-2 at home.

3. The Eskimos have won at least four games every season since joining the CFL in 1949
