Game of the Day: Memphis at Temple
By Covers.com

Memphis Tigers at Temple Owls (+7.5, 50.5)

Temple threw the American Athletic Conference into a state of chaos with its win over East Carolina last weekend and can further muddy the waters Friday when it hosts Memphis. The Owls secured one of the biggest victories in school history with an upset of the then-No. 19 Pirates, marking their first win over a ranked foe since 1998 and first such triumph at home. Not only did Temple move within a half-game of the league lead, but created a five-team logjam at the top of the AAC.

One of the those five teams is the Tigers, who can match their highest win total since making their last bowl appearance in 2008 by improving to 3-0 on the road in the conference. Memphis, which won consecutive games for the first time this season following last weekend’s 40-20 home victory versus Tulsa, can double its win total from a season ago with a win in any of its last four contests. The Tigers’ sights should be set much higher than that, however, as their final three opponents after the Owls are a combined 7-18 and buried among the bottom five teams in the conference.

LINE HISTORY: Memphis opened favored by a converted touchdown and have been bet to -7.5. The total opened at 52.5 and have been bet down to 50.5.

INJURY REPORT: Memphis - UT Sam Craft (questionable Friday, undisclosed). Temple - OL Brendan McGowan (questionable Friday, shoulder), OL Shahbaz Ahmed (questionable Friday, ankle), LB Jarred Alwan (questionable Friday, undisclosed).

WEATHER REPORT: Temperatures will be in the mid 40's with a 11 mile per hour wind gusting towards the south end zone at Lincoln Financial Field. There will also be a 14 percent chance of rain.

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "Last week's upset win at home over East Carolina was aided by a whopping five turnovers by the Pirates. The Owls can't count on such a fortunate run of luck when they host the Memphis Tigers on Friday night." - Covers Expert Jesse Schule.

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "Nice line was set on this game, as Memphis still remains -7.5. Just a small decision on game so far, as 53 percent of cash is backing Memphis. No sharp action on the side, but we got sharp bet on the under 52.5, so we now at 50 on the game. Sixty percent of cash is on the under." - Mike Jerome of @topbetsports.

ABOUT MEMPHIS (5-3, 5-2-1 ATS, 5-3 O/U): The Tigers were held scoreless in the first quarter for the first time all season against Tulsa, but still managed to post more than 30 points for the sixth time after doing so only once in 2013. Brandon Hayes ran for a personal-best 199 yards – tied for the 16th-best mark in school history – including a career-long 51-yard gallop with 14 seconds remaining in the first half that gave Memphis the lead for good. "(That run) was unbelievable … he really bailed us out on that play. I mean, he was fantastic; he was huge for us," Tigers coach Justin Fuente told reporters after the game.

ABOUT TEMPLE (5-3, 4-4 ATS, 3-5 O/U): Despite being outgained 428-135, the Owls held what was the conference’s most explosive offense without a touchdown for the first 57:45 in part because they blocked a field goal and recovered a season-high five fumbles. Temple has allowed only 10 fourth-quarter points this season and East Carolina’s late touchdown was the first one the Owls have allowed in the final 15 minutes since the second-to-last game of the 2013 season. Temple is tied with Florida International for the FBS lead in fumble recoveries (16) and has forced nine more turnovers in 2014 (24) than it did all of last season during a 2-10 campaign (15).

TRENDS:

* Memphis is 5-0-1 ATS in its last six games versus a team with a winning record.
* Temple is 5-1 ATS in its last six games versus a team with a winning record.
* Over is 5-1 in Memphis' last six conference games.
* Over is 5-1-1 in Temple's last seven Friday games.

COVERS CONSENSUS:
Just over 53 percent of wagers are backing Temple at +7.5.

Memphis Tigers vs. Temple Owls

It's time for more college football on Friday night. In one matchup, you have two 5-3 teams facing off in the American Athletic Conference. In the other game,

The Memphis Tigers (5-3 SU, 5-2-1 ATS, 5-3 O/U) have won two straight, but against the dregs of the AAC. They now face Temple (5-3 SU, 4-4 ATS, 3-5 O/U), coming off a big win over East Carolina, 20-10 at home last week. The Owls host Memphis on Friday night at 7:30pmET from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Last game: (11/30/13): Temple (+8) over Memphis, 41-21.

Weather: Partly cloudy. Northwest wind 12-17. Gametime temperature: 52.

Opening and Current Odds: Memphis opened up as a 4-point betting odds favorite and moved to 7.5 in most books. The total opened at 53.5 and moved to 52.

The Tigers have to hold on to the ball

Memphis is 3-1 in the American Athletic Conference and now tied with Houston, UCF, Cincinnati and East Carolina for first place.

Memphis destroyed Tulsa, 40-20 last week as they've scored 88 points in their last two wins.

The Tigers are led by running back Brandon Hayes, who has 531 yards and five TDs, while averaging 5.8 yards per carry. He rushed for 199 yards and three touchdowns against Tulsa last week.

Quarterback Paxton Lynch threw for just 183 yards against Tulsa. He has completed 64 perecent of his attempts for 1,891 yards and 10 TDs with six INTs. He also has seven rushing touchdowns this year.

Tevin Jones leads the Tigers with 27 catches for 356 yards and two scores. Tight end Alan Cross (19 for 262 yards, three TDs) is also a quality target.

On defense, Memphis is led by Tank Jakes, who has 55 tackles, 12.0 TFL and six sacks. The Tigers rank second in the league in sacks with 21. They rank third in scoring defense at 19.4 points per game and are fourth in the AAC in total defense (350.6 yards per game).

Temple's offense has been stale

Temple beat East Carolina, 20-10 last week, but managed just 10 first downs and 135 total yards in the win.

Once again, Temple's defense forced turnovers (five fumbles), despite allowing 432 total yards and 30 first downs.

The poor weather played a factor in the fumbles and Temple's inability to move the ball. But then again, they rank just eighth in the AAC in total offense with 317.6 yards per game. They are fourth in scoring with 29.4 points per game

Quarterback P.J. Walker completed just 7-of-19 passes for just 70 yards against East Carolina. He avoided throwing an interception, after tossing six in the previous three games. He has 1,539 yards passing with 11 TDs and has three rushing TDs this year.

Jahad Thomas leads the Owls with 362 yards rushing but has struggled over the last two weeks. Kenneth Harper did score twice against the Pirates but has just 147 yards this seaosn.

Wide receiver Jalen Fitzpatrick is the top target with 32 catches for 448 yards and five scores. There really aren't many weapons after him.

The defense is tied with Houston for the league lead in forced turnovers. That makes up for their bend-but-not-break defense, who ranks 371.3 yards per game but also allow just 18.4 points per game.

Key College Football Trends

Memphis is
8-1-1 ATS last 10 in November.
1-5 ATS last 6 Friday games.
4-13 last 17 matchups on the under bet following a SU win.

Temple is
11-5 ATS last 16 overall.
4-1 ATS last 5 in November.
5-1-1 last 7 matchups on the over bet on Friday.

Utah State Aggies vs. Wyoming Cowboys

The Utah State Aggies (6-3 SU, 4-5 ATS, 5-4 O/U) are down to their fourth-string quarterback, but they are a road favorite in this one. The Wyoming Cowboys (4-5 SU, 4-5 ATS, 5-4 O/U) might be an underdog, but they are coming off a 45-17 road win over Fresno State as a 15-point underdog. The Cowboys host the Aggies on Friday night at War Memorial

Last game: (11/30/13): Utah State (-24) over Wyoming, 35-7

Opening and Current Odds: Utah State opened as a 4.5-point betting odds favorite and moved to 7 in most books. The total opened at 49.5 and moved to 45.

Weather: Cloudy. Northwest wind 10-20. Gametime temperature: 41. Wind chill: 33.

Who will be Utah State's quarterback?

A win by Utah State will make them bowl eligible, but they have to find a quarterback who can stay healthy. They are coming off an easy, 35-14 win over Hawaii on the road last week, for their fourth win in the last five outings.

Freshman quarterback Kent Myers threw for 186 yards and three TDs in his first career start. Freshman running back LaJuan Hunt had a career-best 150 yards on the ground.

Amazingly, the Aggies have lost three starters due to injuries. Myers set the set the Mountain West single-game record for completion percentage (93.3%) as he completed 14 of 15 against Hawaii.

Utah State has won 12 straight games in November and is now 10-2 in the Mountain West since joining the league from the Western Athletic Conference.

The Utah State defense has been sturdy all season, though they allowed 454 yards against Hawaii. They rank fifth in the nation against the run (90 yards per game) and are 25th in points allowed (21 per game). Zach Vigil leads with 96 tackles, 14 for loss and 6.5 sacks, while Nick Vigil adds 76 tackles, 11 TFL and 5.5 sacks.

Wyoming is back on track

The Cowboys shocked Fresno State last week and they did it would running back Shaun Wick (705 yards), who is out for this game as well with a hand injury. But as they say in football, "next man up".

Brian Hill was that next man up who ran for 281 yards against Fresno State, the second-most in program history. He also added 106 yards on receptions to break the team and conference mark for all-purpose yards. To make it more impressive. Hill was dealing with an ankle injury.

Quarterback Colby Kirkegaard completed 19 of 28 for 320 yards and two scores. Wide receiver Dominic Rufran leads the program with 34 catches for 471 yards and zero TDs, while Jalen Claiborne has 33 catches for 449 yards and three TDs.

Defensively, Tyran Finley picked off two passes, which were the first two of the season for the Cowboys. Amazingly, they are now even in turnover margin.

They allow a whopping 186.3 rushing yards per game and 244 passing yards per game.

Key College Football Trends:

15-5-1 ATS last 21 following an ATS win.
