Northern Illinois at Toledo Rockets: What Bettors Need to Know
By David Payne
Covers.com

Northern Illinois Huskies at Toledo Rockets (-7.5, 67)

These two MAC powers collided last year in early November in a game that ultimately decided the West Division. Northern Illinois, favored by 11.5, dismantled visiting Toledo 65-30, behind a 422-yard rushing attack.

Needless to say, the Rockets (5-3, 5-3 ATS) are out for revenge Tuesday and are in the right place for it. Toledo is 40-22 ATS at the Glass Bowl since 2000.

Northern Illinois (5-3, 3-5 ATS) is 1-5 ATS in its last six trips to the Glass Bowl.

THE LINE

The Rockets opened as 7-point favorites Sunday at the Las Vegas Wynn, but it was up to 7.5 with even a few 8s offshore by Monday. Toledo has covered five straight games as a home favorite and six of seven overall when favored.

THE TOTAL

Oddsmakers expect a shootout and opened the total at 67. The Huskies average 38.5 points and surrender 32.50 points. The
Rockets average 36.50 points and surrender 25 per game.

The Over is 19-6-1 in the Rockets’ last 26 games as a home favorite.

RECENT HISTORY

The Huskies are coming off a 31-30 win over Buffalo on Oct. 22 and have won three straight overall. They have conference wins over Kent State and Western Michigan, but a loss at a bad Central Michigan team is an eyebrow-raiser.

Toledo played a difficult non-conference schedule, losing to Ohio State, Boise State and Syracuse. The Rockets’ own the 38th toughest schedule in the nation, according to the Sagarin Ratings. Northern Illinois is 74th.

The Rockets knocked off defending MAC champion Miami (OH), 49-28, on Oct. 22, have won four straight and are the MAC’s only unbeaten team in conference play.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

The Rockets are extremely balanced (186.75 rushing, 251.63 passing). They lead the MAC in turnover margin, pass efficiency and punt returns and are allowing less than 20 points per game in conference play.

The Huskies boast the MAC’s best offense, averaging 463.38 yards. They get it done on the ground, averaging 244.25 yards rushing. Their defense, however, has struggled, surrendering more than 44 points three times this season, including 48 to Central Michigan in early October.

QB BREAKDOWN

Toledo coach Tim Beckman has stuck with a two-quarterback rotation of junior Austin Dantin (10 TDs, 1 INT) and sophomore Terrance Owens (6 TDs, 2 INTs). Owens played the entire game in last year’s loss to Northern Illinois, completing 18 of 38 passes for 186 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Chandler Harnish, the Huskies’ senior QB, is arguably the best signal-caller in the MAC. He’s completing 62.8 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. But Harnish is much more dangerous on the ground. He leads Northern Illinois in rushing, averaging 7.9 yards per carry.

INJURY REPORT

Toledo senior safety Charles Rancifer will miss tonight's game due to disciplinary reasons, the Toledo Blade reported. Rancifer is fourth on the team in tackles.

WEATHER

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-50s with light winds and only a slight chance of precipitation.

TRENDY

Northern Illinois is 3-9-1 ATS in last 13 games against Toledo.

Over is 9-4 in Huskies last 13.

The Rockets are 0-4 ATS in last four games after a bye.
