Ball State hosts Eastern Michigan Tuesday
By: Sam Chase
StatFox.com

The Eastern Michigan Eagles were back home on Saturday, Oct. 29 for the first time since Oct. 8, but disappointed their hometown crowd with an upset 28-15 loss to a sub-.500 Miami (Ohio) team (MIAO +7). After starting the season 3-1, the Eagles have lost three of their last four and are now 5-4 (7-2 ATS) and 2-3 in the MAC. Eastern Michigan went down 14-0 in the first quarter and never got closer than their 14-3 halftime deficit. They were outgained by 44 yards, gave up seven more first downs than they achieved and possessed the ball for nearly ten fewer minutes than the RedHawks. With over a week to recover, the Eagles travel to Muncie Tuesday night for a showdown with Ball State. The Cardinals took their turn as unfortunate victims of conference powerhouse Western Michigan, losing 52-20 at home (WMU -17.5) last Tuesday. They, like Eastern Michigan, started the season 3-1 but have also struggled as of late, losing four of their last five to fall to 4-5 (5-4 ATS) and 1-4 in the MAC. The Cardinals only had one fewer first down than Western Michigan and put up 497 yards of total offense, but they gave up 553 yards, committed three turnovers (and forced none) and went six of 17 on third downs. Over the last five seasons, teams that gained 75 or fewer rushing yards in their previous game (EMU) are 27-55 against teams that averaged at least 6.5 yards per rushing attempt in their previous game. In the same time frame, however, road teams with winning records that have covered the spread in five or six of their previous seven games (EMU) are 57-24 ATS against teams with losing records.

Junior QB Brogan Roback (62.8 CMP%, 1,387 yards, 10 TDs, 3 INTs) was suspended just before the season for two games for his conduct off the field. He sat the third game of the year as well, and saw increasing action in the fourth and fifth games before taking over as the fulltime starter against Bowling Green on October 8. His backup, QB Todd Porter (61.3 CMP%, 1,064 yards, 7 TDs, 9 INTs), struggled with interceptions, and Roback has been a clear upgrade. He’s fourth in the MAC with a passer rating of 142.5 and fifth with 7.7 yards per attempt. He’s gotten good production from a solid set of receivers, as WRs Sergio Bailey II (43 catches, 614 yards, 3 TDs), Antoine Porter (34 catches, 421 yards, 4 TDs) and John Niupalau (17 catches, 234 yards, 3 TDs) and TE Nigel Kilby (26 catches, 339 yards, 4 TDs) all have at least three touchdown receptions. Bailey is 10th in the conference in receiving yards, and has generally put up greater production as the season has gone along—his eight catches for 143 yards and a touchdown against Ohio was the only 100-yard receiving game for an Eagle this year. Eastern Michigan lost sophomore RB Shaq Vann (586 rushing yards, 264 receiving yards last year) before the season with a shoulder injury. In his place, RB Ian Eriksen (120 carries, 461 yards, 5 TDs) and RB Breck Turner (67 carries, 361 yards, 4 TDs) have been underwhelming, as the Eagles are 102nd in the country with 141.1 rushing yards per game. On defense, they’re 82nd with 423 yards allowed per game and 84th with 30.1 points allowed per game. DL Pat O’Connor is fifth in the MAC with six sacks.

Ball State’s offense is centered around one of the nation’s best backs, RB James Gilbert (210 carries, 1,142 yards, 11 TDs). He’s eighth in the country in rushing yards, fourth in carries and tied for 16th in rushing touchdowns. He leads the MAC in all three categories by significant margins. Just how important is Gilbert to the Cardinals’ offense? Despite trailing to Western Michigan by large margins that would normally necessitate an emphasis on the passing game, Ball State still ran him 29 times for 155 yards. The 298 rushing yards Ball State put up was the most the Broncos have allowed all season—the rest came on 68 yards from freshman RB Malik Dunner (23 carries, 145 yards, TD) and 69 from new starting QB Jack Milas, including a 47-yard run. Milas completed 20 of 38 passes for 199 yards, a touchdown and two picks in his first action of the season. He was filling in for QB Riley Neal (60.2 CMP%, 1,700 yards, 7 TDs, 9 INTs), who was in uniform but sat with an injury. From the turnovers to the rushing yards—Neal has 314 this year—Milas’ performance was pretty much in line with what the Cardinals have come to expect from Neal this season. Relative to Gilbert, inconsistent quarterback play has been an issue hampering the offense all year. WR KeVonn Mabon (55 catches, 645 yards) is ninth in the conference in receiving yards and fourth in receptions, but is also the only player in the MAC with over 26 catches and no touchdowns. WRs Damon Hazelton JR. (29 catches, 317 yards, 3 TDs) and Corey Lacanaria (23 catches, 256 yards, TD) have also made an impact. With 453 total yards allowed per game, the defense is ranked 106th in the country. They come across better viewed through points allowed, though, as their 28.3 points allowed per game is 69th nationally. Playing Western Michigan certainly didn’t help their numbers.

NCAAF Game of the Day: Western Michigan at Kent State
By Covers.com

Western Michigan Broncos at Kent State Golden Flashes (+21, 55)

NCAA football bettors aren't scared off big spreads when it comes to contenders: Live From Las Vegas

As the NCAA football season winds down, spreads are growing when it comes to the top teams in the nation.

Senior wide receiver Corey Davis made history last week for Western Michigan and hopes to set another record when the 21st-ranked Broncos visit Kent State on Tuesday for a Mid-American Conference contest. The highly regarded NFL prospect broke the MAC record for receiving yards in a game with 272 as Western Michigan rolled over Ball State 52-20 to open at 9-0 for the first time.

Davis also is tied with Marshall’s Darius Watts for the MAC record with 47 career touchdown receptions and is just one of three major weapons, along with quarterback Zach Terrell and running back Jarvion Franklin, for the Broncos. Western Michigan has won 11 in a row dating back to last season and ranked 23rd in the first College Football Playoff rankings. “We can’t control where we’re rated or the playoff poll or anything like that,” Terrell told reporters. “For us, that’s just outside noise. We’re just focused on getting better each and every day.” Kent State knocked off Central Michigan 27-24 in its last game on Oct. 29 and will test the Broncos with the top pass efficiency defense in the conference.

LINE HISTORY: Western Michigan opened as big 18-point road favorites but that spread was not big enough for bettors as, by Tuesday morning, the action forced the books to move that number up to 21. The total hit the board at 55 and has yet to move. Follow the complete line history, here.

INJURY REPORT:

Western Michigan - RB J. Bogan (doubtful, undisclosed).

Kent State - RB W. Mathews (probable, ankle), S J. McRae (probable, concussion), QB M. Mitchell (questionable, wrist), WR K. White (out indefinitely, leg), WR A. Dixon (out for season, illness).

WEATHER REPORT: There is a 65 percent chance of rain showers at kickoff tonight at Dix Stadium, increasing to 85 percent for the second half. Temperatures will be in the 50's and wind will not be a factor.

ABOUT WESTERN MICHIGAN (9-0 SU, 7-2 ATS, 5-4 O/U): Terrell finished with at least 300 passing yards for the third time in four games last Tuesday against Ball State and has completed 71.6 percent of his passes with an impressive 23 TD tosses and just one interception. Franklin went over 1,000 yards for the season after his fifth straight contest with 100 or more last week and Davis has recorded 61 receptions for 1,011 yards and 14 touchdowns. Defensive back Darius Phillips has returned three interceptions for scores this season, including a 75-yarder last week, to set a school record.

ABOUT KENT STATE (3-6 SU, 5-4 ATS, 5-4 O/U): Quarterback Nick Holley rushed for 144 yards in the win over Central Michigan and leads the team with 775 overall to go along with nine touchdowns on the ground. Freshman Justin Rankin is second on the team in rushing (381 yards, two TDs) after gaining 78 yards in his last contest and is the top receiver with 24 catches for 301 yards. Just two of the Golden Flashes’ five MAC opponents have completed better than 50 percent of their passes while Kent State stands second in the league in total defense (350.7 yards) and third in rushing defense (145.9).

TRENDS:

* Broncos are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a losing home record.
* Golden Flashes are 2-8 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
* Over is 4-0 in Broncos last 4 games following a bye week.
* Under is 6-0 in Golden Flashes last 6 games following a straight up win.
* Favorite is 10-0 ATS in their last 10 meetings.

CONSENSUS: The betting public is in love with Western Michigan and even being 21-point road favorites isn't scaring them off in this one - the Broncos are picking up 73 percent of the wagers. Over 55 is grabbing 70 percent of the selections.
