NCAA Football Trends & Angles – Week 7

We are already almost to the halfway point of the college football regular season as we have reached Week 7, and we eked out a profit in our first week of using year-round NCAA Football Trends & Angles last week as they finished 8-6, 57.1 percent on a game-by-game basis.

As those of you that have followed us in the past probably already know, the vast majority of our angles will be contrarian in nature and thus may take a bit of courage on the part of the bettors, as many of them will point you to some “ugly” underdogs and live ‘unders’ when we have total angles. This week we have only three repeating angles from the six that we had last week as the other three had no qualifying plays this Week 7.

Do not fret however as we have replaced those two fresh angles including our leading angle, which is actually the first mainstream angle we have used this season that is not contrarian. Do not get used to those however as they will be few and far between.

All of our season-long trends this season go back to 2005, as we feel that gives us a large enough sampling without going back too far to games that may pre-date certain changes in the game that may make using older games obsolete.

So here are our NCAA Football Trends & Angles for Week 7, with all records being for the last eight full seasons since 2005 plus the first six weeks of this season.

Play on any conference favorite coming off of four straight ATS wins (138-89-3, 60.8% ATS): This is one of our very few angles that is not contrarian. Sometimes, books simply do not catch up to how good a team is, and that team keeps on covering while cast in the favorite role. This is much more common in college sports, where it is easier for teams to fly under the radar than it is in the pros. Qualifiers: Colorado State -3½, Ohio -17½, Oregon -14 and UCLA -24½.

Play against any conference home favorite that was an underdog in each of its last three games (125-88-3, 58.7% ATS): This is an oldie but goodie that we have used in one form or another in every sport that we do. Teams that have been underdogs in their last three games in a row are oftentimes not very good football teams, and when these clubs are suddenly cast in the favored role, they have usually wilted under the pressure of now being expected to win. Qualifiers: Miami-Ohio +4.

Play on any road team coming off of four or more straight home games (58-40-2, 59.2% ATS): Not many angles get more contrarian than this one, as conventional wisdom would suggest that teams that have been home for a long time would struggle when they finally hit the road. The thing is though that like all general theories like that, the books are ahead of the players, and they have shaded the lines so much in this situation knowing that most people will back the home team that it is the road teams that have been the money-makers since 2005. Qualifiers: Baylor -17½, Indiana +9½, Nebraska -14½ and Northwestern +10.

Bet on any division road underdog of +3 or more coming off of a straight up loss by 20 points or more (86-60-2, 58.9% ATS): This angle is similar to one we use in professional sports. Now on the surface, one may not expect this to work as well in college with the talent disparity between teams being so much greater, but keep in mind that even losing teams are more familiar with division foes than any other team on the schedule, making it easier to improve from the previous week, plus oddsmakers are able to pad the spreads on these teams when they are road underdogs as they receive such minimal action. Qualifiers: Colorado +25 and Syracuse +7.

Play the ‘under’ in conference games if the home team is coming off of three or more road games (70-40-2, 60.3%):This angle combines the home team possibly being fatigued after traveling for so long with teams generally playing more conservatively in more important conference games, resulting in an inordinate amount of relatively low scoring games. Qualifying ‘unders’: Memphis at Houston and Texas A&M at Mississippi.

Missouri is 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. Missouri has been amazing this year now that they have a healthy James Franklin at quarterback. Georgia 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 home games. The over is 4-0 in the Tigers last 4 road games. The over is 7-0 in Georgia’s last 7 games overall.

Baylor has scored at least 69 points in every single game this year. Their first road game of the year is this week against Bill Snyder and Kansas State. The Bears are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games overall. Kansas State is 20-9-1 ATS in their last 30 games overall. The underdog is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.

Florida and LSU meet in Baton Rouge this weekend. The Gators are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 trips to Baton Rouge. LSU’s offense has been much improved this season thanks to some great play from quarterback Zach Mettenberger. The over is 6-0 in LSU’s last 6 games overall. The under is 12-5 in the last 17 meetings between these teams.

Clemson will host Boston College this week as they prepare for a massive showdown with Florida State next weekend. Boston College is 0-7 ATS in their last 7 road games.
