NHL | Blackhawks vs Hurricanes
Play on: Hurricanes -155 at Bovada

The set-up: Carolina won’t be “looking past” its opponent today as it’s lost eight of its last ten. The Hawks have lost five in a row, but the Hurricanes enjoy five whole days off after this, so I’m expecting the home side to lay everything on the line tonight. There’s no rest for the wicked as far as Chicago is concerned though, with a night off before a tough divisional game at home against an equally as hungry Blues team.

The pick: Take it for what you will as well, but Carolina is 7-2 in its last nine non-conference home games as a home fav in the -150 to -175 range. Consider Carolina in this match-up.

NBA | Jazz vs Grizzlies
Play on: UNDER 205½ -124

Memphis enters this game ranked 28th in offence (103.1 ppg) and 1st in D ppg allowed(101.1) and and 30th in pace . The Grizzlies are methodical in their approach to all games, and are a very physical team. It must be noted that 6 of the Grizzlies L/9 opponents did not breach the 100 point plateau. Meanwhile, the Utah Jazz are ranked towards the middle of the pack in most major categories, but have for a long time now based their successes and failures on their ability to play a top tier brand of two way hoops. Right now they have gotten away from that a bit , but tonight they will be forced into a slower pace and acclimate themselves well to that slower speed limit. With that said, Im betting on this tilt being a hard fought old school type affair that stays on the low side of the Total.

Under is 4-0 in Grizzlies last 4 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.Under is 7-1 in Grizzlies last 8 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game.Under is 4-1 in Grizzlies last 5 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of greater than .600.Under is 12-5 in Jazz last 17 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.Under is 7-3 in Jazz last 10 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.Under is 20-6 in the last 26 meetings in Memphis.Under is 15-7 in the last 22 meetings.

NBA Road teams where the total is greater than or equal to 200 (UTAH) - revenging a straight up loss vs opponent as a home favorite of 7 or more against opponent off a home win are 31-7 UNDER L/5 seasons for a 82% conversion rate for bettors

My free play for Monday night is in the NBA, as I love the Oklahoma City Thunder to take care of the Phoenix Suns with this cheap line on the game.

My 3-year-old niece can tell you the Suns have been struggling because of their defense, and when you go into a town like Oklahoma City to face a team like the Thunder, it just doesn't bode well.

The Suns allow 114.4 points per game, and that number swells to 119 while ordering room service. When you factor in Phoenix averaging just 98 points per game in its last five, it's easy to see where this game is headed.

These two met in OKC on Oct. 28, when the Thunder pulled off a 117-110 victory. It's part of a 1-10 slide the Suns are endured in since a 121-100 season-opening win against Dallas. The Suns have allowed triple digits in every game this season, and they have the worst scoring offense in the league.

Oklahoma City, which has covered six of its last seven games, will be looking to avenge a 111-96 loss at Dallas, which snapped a seven-game win streak that started with the win over the Suns and included a 98-80 victory over the Houston Rockets.

The Thunder average 109 points per contest, but that number climbs to 113.3 at home.

Lay the chalk, as Oklahoma City lays a smack down on the Suns.

1* THUNDER

4th straight on the road for the Vancouver Canucks, and it will be a loss.

Vancouver has been a pleasant surprise this season, but they have cooled down a little on this road swing, as they have dropped 2 of 3 thus far, and they are catching the Rangers at the wrong time!

After a slow start to the season, New York has turned it up a notch of late, as the Broadway Blue Shirts play this home game with wins in 5 of their last 6 games.

Henrik Lundqvist has been a wall - as usual - between the pipes, as the Rangers have done a good job spotting The King his needed rest as he gets near the end of his career. Lundqvist has a 2.65 goals against average this season, and his team has won 3 straight and 7 of the last 10 series meetings.

Home ice makes the difference in this one. Go with New York over Vancouver as your comp play for Monday.

3* N.Y. RANGERS

NBA | Jazz vs Grizzlies
Play on: Jazz -3½ -102 at 5Dimes

The Grizzlies were one of the West's worst teams a year ago, this year they are healthy, back on its defensive approach and looking like a dark horse playoff team. Utah needs to account for a slower game by making its shots. Against the Grizz, Utah needs an efficient game from Mitchell. Ingles will provide points, so Utah doesn't need 30 out of its second-year All-Star-caliber player.

The Jazz are going to figure it out sooner or later. They're too good on both ends of the floor to flop, and Mitchell is too good a scorer to continue shooting such a terrible percentage—especially from deep.

Although we're not saying this matchup against the Grizzlies is the catalyst to an official turnaround, we are very much suggesting that there's nothing like a good ole slump-buster when you need a little boost.

Give this one to the Jazz, and give it to them by a wide margin.

Back Utah.

NBA | Spurs vs Kings
Play on: Kings +3 -102 at 5Dimes

10* FREE NBA PICK (Kings +3)

I'll take my chances here with the Kings as a home dog against the Spurs. The public is going to see the Spurs have won 14 straight in the series and Sacramento is off an ugly 101-86 loss at home to the Lakers and jump all over SA as a small road favorite. Not me. I really like what I have seen from this Kings team. They simply couldn't buy a basket against LA. Sacramento comes in 9th in the NBA in scoring at 115.3 ppg and 7th in effective field goal percentage at 53.6. Spurs are 22nd at 50.1 for those wondering. San Antonio last couple of years hasn't been nearly as good on the road as they have at home and their 2 road wins so far are against the Suns and Lakers (by 1-point). I look for the Spurs to struggle to keep pace and for Sacramento to finally put an end to this losing streak. Give me the Kings +3!

Monday comp play on the Under in the Giants-49ers game.

Hard to see this one turning into a "shootout", especially with the way New York's offense has been performing this year.

The Giants have been held to 20 points or less in 6 of their 8 games this season, and the Under has been the play in their last pair, and 5 of 8 overall this year.

Backtracking to last season, New York is on a prolonged 11-4 Under run their last 15 games contested.

Eli Manning looks ancient, and the fact his offensive line cannot protect him has contributed to a whopping 31 sacks on the year!

San Francisco will once again go with Nick Mullens as their quarterback. He had a career game in the Niners 34-3 win over Oakland back on November 1st, but even with 34 points the Niners held Under the total for the 3rd straight time.

Kyle Shanahan's club is 4-3-1 Under for the season, as their defense has shown some bite with just 21 total points allowed in their last pair of games.

I can see both defenses keeping the TD's off the board tonight, as I see a host of field goals being booted tonight at Levi's Stadium.

Giants and Niners to land Under the total.

2* N.Y. GIANTS-SAN FRANCISCO UNDER

My free play for tonight is on the San Francisco 49ers, as I'll take a shot with a game I'm not necessarily interested in, but with everything else on the board - it's the best free pick I can come up with for you.

Some people may have been shocked by Nick Mullens' debut, but it shouldn't have been a surprise. He was making his first career start against an Oakland Raiders team that is building for its impending move to Las Vegas, and I liken it to a Major League Baseball pitcher making his starting debut. You're going to get his absolute best, while the defense has no true scouting report and doesn't know what to expect.

Mullens joined Hall of Famers Jim Kelly and Fran Tarkenton as the only players with at least 250 yards passing, three touchdowns and no interceptions in his first career game. His 151.9 rating was the highest by a quarterback in his debut with at least 20 attempts since the merger.

Now he will attack the 21st-ranked defense in the league, and gets to do so at home on national television. Is there a bigger stage for this kid, to prove he is worthy of running an offense?

Speaking of defense, Frisco - which has covered 26 of its last 32 appearances on Monday night - isn't actually that bad in that department, ranking 14th overall. And with New York scoring touchdowns on just 40 percent of its red-zone trips - second-worst in the league - I don't know if the Giants - who have failed to cover 24 of their last 35 in the month of November - have much success on the scoreboard in this game.

Take the 49ers in this one.

And as I always insist, with football favorites laying anywhere between -3 and -4' points, I want you purchasing the half point down.

1* 49ERS

The Long Beach State 49ers are my free pick for tonight, as I think they'll go into Tempe and give the Arizona State Sun Devils everything they can handle.

The Niners are playing at least five Pac-12 opponents and nine of 14 non-conference games away from home this season, looking to prepare themselves for a run in the Big West Conference. They have the toughest schedule in the league, but coach Dan Monson is seasoned and will have his troops ready.

Long Beach State returns a lot of firepower, with Deishaun Booker, Bryan Alberts, Temidayo Yussuf, Jordan Roberts and Edon Maxhuni leading the charge. The chemistry is the most important thing, and this team will have it with this core back for a another season.

The Sun Devils struggled against Fullerton in their opener, underestimating how good a mid-major can be, not to mention how hungry those smaller west coast conference teams love to challenge the Pac-12 big boys.

Play Long Beach State, as it pushes ASU to the brink and stays within single digits.

1* LONG BEACH STATE

The new-look Jimmy Butler 76ers will have to wait for one more game, but I expect the buzz created by Philly nabbing the disgruntled Minnesota guard will have a ripple effect tonight when they play at Miami against a Heat team they eliminated in 5 games last postseason.

The Sixers did cover in their 4 wins in that series, and I like them to cover again tonight against the Heat.

Philadelphia just had a 2 game winning streak snapped, as they dropped an overtime affair in Memphis on Saturday to see their road mark drop to a lowly 1-6. It is obviously a mark that must improve if Philly wishes to be considered among the elite in the East.

Miami is on a 2 game slide of their own, and they are just 2-5 both straight up and against the spread in their last 7 games. The Heat are also down one Dwyane Wade who is at home after the birth of his child.

While the 76ers rotation is a little thin due to the Butler trade, there are still plenty of pieces in place for them to take this one on the road, as Joel Embiid continues to be a beast - over 27 points per game, and 13 rebounds per contest! - along with Ben Simmons and JJ Reddick also chipping in with solid play on a nightly basis.

The Sixers also welcomed Wilson Chandler back to the lineup, as Chandler made his season debut at Memphis after starting the year on the bench with a hamstring injury.

Going to look for tonight to be a springboard win for Philly as they get set to really take off once Butler is on the hardwood.

Philly as the small dog the play for Monday.

2* PHILADELPHIA
