Intriguing game this afternoon as Central Florida is trying to put the caps on a second straight unbeaten season.
Last year the Knights concluded their 13-0 year with a 34-27 bowl win over Auburn out of the SEC as the +10 1/2 point underdog.
Things are a little bit different this season, as starting quarterback McKenzie Milton was lost during the Knights regular season finale to a knee injury, so it will be freshman Darriel Mack who looked pretty damn good in UCF's 56-41 AAC Championship Game win over Memphis.
What has not changed is the fact the Knights are once again unbeaten - winning streak now at 25 in a row - and what also has not changed is the fact they will be going up against one of the "big boys" from the SEC, this time LSU.
On paper LSU is clearly the favored team, as they played the tougher schedule, have the better defense by far, and have a running game that should prove successful against the weak UCF stop unit - the Knights allowed 30 points or more 4 times this season, and they allowed over 400 yards per game to be posted on them as well - but they do not play these games on paper, and I am expecting to see more more UCF magic in Glendale this New Year's Day.
Under Ed Oregron, the Tigers much prefer to be the "hunted" - 4-1 against the spread in the underdog role - as opposed to the "hunter" - 1-5 against the spread in the favorite role. That also goes back to last season's bowl game when they lost a 21-17 decision to Notre Dame as the small favorite.
Yes, the Tigers are the "better" team, but can they throw the KO punch here today against the Knights? LSU quarterback Joe Burrow is a solid "game manager", but this Bayou Bengals offense was mostly inconsistent this season, so even though the Knights have a weak stop unit, the ball does figure to be in the hands of the youngster Mack and the quick-strike offense enough today to keep this one interesting.
UCF has 22 seniors on this year's unbeaten team, and they are on the verge of some history if they can complete this mission today with the outright win. On offense the Knights boast a powerful running combo of McCrae and Killins, and their receiving trio of Davis, Snelson and Nixon give Mack PLENTY of weapons at his disposal.
David stunned Goliath last year, when UCF downed Auburn, no reason to think lightning can't strike twice.
Mark me down for a play on the Knights plus the points.
2* UCF

Gonna side with the host today for the win and the cover as the home chalk.
Notre Dame stands at 10-3, and are off a fairly "flat" effort against Coppin State, as Mike Brey's team won just 63-56 in a game they were listed as the -30 1/2 point home chalk. They will need to "step" up their game tonight against # 10 Virginia Tech, as the Hokies have dropped only one of their first dozen games, and they have not lost at home yet this term, sporting a 7-0 mark and a 4-2 against the spread ledger.
These conference foes split their pair last year, as the road team was the winner in both games. The Gobblers win last January in South Bend snapped a 7-game Irish winning streak.
Look for Buzz Williams' team to be up for the call today, as they catch Notre Dame playing away from home for the first time since December 15th.
Tech is averaging a full 4 points more per game than Our Lady, and allowing about 10 points less per game than the Irish. Notre Dame may have played the tougher schedule thus far, but I don't think that is going to matter today when they jump ball.
Leading scorer Nickeil Alexander-Walker did miss the Hokies last game with an ankle sprain and is listed as questionable for this one, but Justin Robinson is healthy and primed for a big game after netting just 8 in Tech's last game, and Ahmed Hill did pour in 20 in Alexander-Walker's absence in Va Tech's last tilt.
This has been an Irish-heavy series lately, but that changes here in 2019.
Lay it with Virginia Tech.
1* VIRGINIA TECH

New year, but still the same New York team that is just 9 wins against 28 losses for the season.
The Knickerbockers latest losing streak stands at 7 in a row straight up, and 6 in a row against the spread. They have absorbed double-digit beatings in each of their last 3 losses, and in 6 of those 7 losses overall.
Do not expect anything to change here on New Year's Day night, as Denver boasts a 14-3 straight up mark at the Pepsi Center, and a 12-5 against the spread mark in those home games. The Nuggets are riding an 8-game home winning streak, covering all but their last win against San Antonio when they won by 3 as the -4 1/2 point favorite.
Laying double-digits this season at home has not been any issue for the Nuggs, as they are a perfect 3-0 against the spread in that role. The Knicks on the other hand, have covered just 4 of their 11 games when catching ten-points or more from the oddsmakers.
Series numbers show Denver sporting 6 wins and covers over the past 7 series meetings, including winning and covering each of the last 4 on their home court.
Hard to argue with those dominant Denver numbers that I just typed up above.
Go ahead and lay the lumber with Denver in this BLOWOUT for New Year's Day.
3* DENVER

My money is on the Bulldogs to make easy work of Texas and cover the near two-touchdown spread. I think Georgia had every reason to be pissed about not making the playoffs. If Alabama is as good as everyone thinks and they had them on the ropes in the SEC title game, there's really no debate, especially because we know it's not a fluke after last year. I get why they didn't get invited and I'm sure they do as well, but I think this is a very pissed off bunch of kids and that's bad news for Texas. Only way the Longhorns are keeping this close is if Georgia doesn't show up. I'm confident they will. Bet the Bulldogs -12.5!

LSU vs. Central Florida
10* FREE NCAAF PICK (UCF +7.5)
There’s just something special about this run the Knights are on and I just think there’s too much value to pass up with them in this game. It would be one thing if this line was around a field goal and we basically needed them to win outright. I just don’t think it’s asking a lot for them to keep this within a touchdown.
I think a lot of people just assume that LSU is going to put it on themselves to put an end to the Knights winning streak. I don’t think that is going to be the case at all. I think it’s really hard for these elite Power 5 teams to give the Group of 5 teams the respect they deserve.
I’m LSU wants to get a win here, but I also think this team has to feel like that all they need to do is show up and they will easily win here. Especially after the injury that will keep McKenzie Milton out of this game.
I think that lack of respect that the Tigers are going to have for UCF is going to allow the Knights to not only hang around and cover the spread, but potentially win this game outright. Keep in mind that the Group of 5 team that has played in the New Year’s Six bowl the last 5 years has gone 4-1 ATS with 4 outright wins.
For those that didn’t watch the AAC title game, UCF’s backup quarterback, Darriel Mack Jr, threw for 348 yards and 2 scores with a ridiculous 12.9 average per attempt. He also ran for 59 yards and 4 scores.
I also think a lot of people aren’t giving the Knights the full respect they deserve because they aren’t suppose to be doing this after losing head coach Scott Frost to Nebraska. Turns out UCF struck gold in new head coach Josh Heupel. I think this team can score on anyone and I know the defense hasn’t been great, but I also think LSU’s offense is a bit limited. Give me the Knights +7.5!

Jazz vs. Raptors
Raptors-3 -105
The NBA Comp Play is on Toronto at 7:35 eastern. The Raptors have covered 10 of 11 in the series with Utah and the winning team has covered 22 of 23 in the series. Toronto has covered the last 4 playing off 3+ ats losses. The Jazz are off a big blowout win over the Sixers but are 0-4 ats off a win of 20 or more and have failed to cover 4 of the last on the road. Look for Toronto to take this one

IOWA is 28-7 ATS versus excellent rushing teams averaging >=5.25 rushing yards/carry, and 20-8 ATS against teams who commit 1 or less turnovers/game on the season. While Miss St has the 10th best defense against the rush, Iowa has the 7th best in the country.
Take IOWA +7

Marquette is a team lots of analysts really like this season, and they might be right. But the team is going to have to prove they can win away from home, and I'm willing to bet against them until they do. The one true road game this season was a train wreck blowout loss at Indiana. St. John's is off its first loss of the season and they were completely hosed by the officials. It looks like the Johnnies might have been considerably underrated. The Red Storm are going to have knock down their outside shots in this game as I see Marquette with an edge on the glass. But the flip side is a huge ball security advantage for the home team. Figures to be close but I'm going to roll with St. John's to pull this one out.
