Tom Freese

Giants at Astros
Pick: Giants -130

The Astros are clearly the worst team in baseball at 40-84. They are off BB wins - but that was against the Cubs. Take note that the Astros have only had two winning streaks of more than two games all season. The last one was Memorial Day weekend and the other was back in April! They are just 4-11 head to head with the Giants the last three seasons, although this is the first time they've played all season. This is a critical series for San Francisco as they have fallen behind in the races for the Wild Card and NL West division. They will start Ryan Vogelsong, who has a 6-1 TSR as a favorite of -125 to -175. In 20 starts, he has an ERA of 2.56 and he'll be facing a Houston lineup that is 24-64 vs. righties this season. The Astros start lefty Wandy Rodriguez. The Giants are 20-12 vs. southpaws this season despite the loss Thursday. 10* on San Francisco

Wunderdog

Arizona at Atlanta
Pick: Atlanta -110

The Braves have been impressive in the NL. They trail only the Philadelphia Phillies with an overall record of 21 games above .500 on the season, and have played at an even higher level of late at 10-4 over their last 14 games. Arizona was a hot club winning seven straight, but have now settled down losing their last two. This team has been prone to losing streaks, dropping three or more games in a row six times this season. As he ages, Derek Lowe has proven to be a more valuable weapon for the Braves when he is coming off extended rest of 5 days, where the Braves are an almost unbeatable 9-1 in his last 10. Arizona has not fared well in Atlanta in recent games at just 2-5 in their last seven. Back Atlanta here.

Carolina at Miami
Pick: Carolina +6

The Carolina Panthers will likely have a new look with Cam Newton under center this year. Last week his results were mixed. Newton was hurried a lot and threw some balls off his back foot, but he also completed some of those. He gives the Panthers attack a deep threat, which has been lacking in the past. The Panthers defense was way ahead of their offense a year ago, and opened the first quarter with a pick-6 against the Giants. The Panthers scored 20 points last week, winning by 10 points. Winning by 10 points did not happen for this team once last year, so things are looking up. They didn't win one in the preseason by 10 points last year either, running the tally to 20 straight. The Dolphins have some issues with Atlanta starters hitting them with a 17-0 deficit in the first quarter last week before they packed it in. They won't get the same luxury here with a new coach that proved in week one he is changing the culture. Take Carolina here.
