4* HOUSTON over NY METS

The Houston Astros are an excellent “buy” right now, a team that has gone 18-10 over their last 28 games, including a 5-0 run entering tonight, and is playing loosely and aggressively while the markets ignore them. They are now within a game of third place in the N.L. Central, which adds a target to shoot for, and we call for that momentum to continue tonight in a setting in which starter Nelson Figueroa will certainly bring a chip on his shoulder.

The Brooklyn-born Figueroa has performed well since being given a chance to start, a 1.64 over two games despite not getting a decision, with 11 K’s vs. only eight hits allowed. Now he gets a chance to win in a setting that means a great deal to him, after the Mets released him following a two-year stint in 2008-09. His prospects for redemption are positive against a slumping lineup that gets even worse without Jose Reyes tonight, and all key arms are rested and ready in the bullpen behind him.

While the Astros are surging home, the Mets have limped to a 15-24 since the All Star break and are not heading anywhere. They only get this price point based on reputation, not their current realities, and even the 1.64 over the last three starts from Mike Pelfrey brings an * next to it. He put that run together by throwing 119, 113 and 122 pitches, by far the highest three-game count of his career, and we color him as particularly vulnerable here because of that toll. And given that there is not all that much pop coming from his right arm anyway (only 19 K’s in 43.1 IP since July 1st), the Astros can get plenty of quality swings.

2* Washington Redskins +5.5

Looking at the Skins + the point tonight as Rex Grossman is a strong capable back up to QB. McNabb as he is out tonight, The public is rolling with the NY Jet's @ 60% + right now. We are red hot 6-2 75% NFLX so far & and we will play ON the dangerous Skins + the points. Jet's Qb Mark Sanchez is not in sync after the NY Giants embarrassed them (31- 16). Even with out A. Haynesworth we like the powerful Skins D tonight. The Skins Rex Grossman checks in with an impressive 97.7 passer rating so far this 2010 preseason. The exclusive RZ Power ratings have the Skins at a +2.4 rating and grabbing the 5.5 will only be a bonus. Let's fire away a nice Jack Hammer side as the coaches from Washington will keep this baby close!
