There are 2 very good defenses taking the field for this nooner on Friday, as both clubs allow less than 325 yards of offense to their opponents. 8 straight games that Clemson played to end the year totaled 40 points or less. Against fellow bowlers, South Florida games averaged 36 points and the Tiger games went a 35 point average. In those games, the Bull offense managed to score more than 16 points just twice in 7 games.

Miami fired coach Randy Shannon and has already announced that former Temple coach Al Golden will take over next season. The loss of Shannon is going to prove to be motivatlon for the Hurricanes as many of the players, like QB Jacory Harris, really like Shannon and don’t what his work to go unnoticed. They know a win today is like a win for Shannon. Harris is slated to start today and when’s he’s going good, he’s real good. He threw 13 TDs and had just five INTs in five wins this season, but he also had just one TD and seven INTs in four losses. Today he will get some help from a very good defensitve line that is eighth in the natlon with 37 sacks. They will get after Notre Dame QB Tommy Rees who threw eight INTs as he led the Irish to a three-game winning streak to close the season. And the Irish defense that looked so good to end the season isn’t that far removed from giving up 400 yards per game before that final three-game streak. Lay the points today and play Miami.

Two players will make the difference for South Carolina tonight – QB Stephen Garcia and RB Marcus Lattimore. Garcia has thrown for 2,816 yards, 20 TDs and 11 INTs and he’s got to stay away from the game-changing or momentum-killing interceptions. Lattimore has rushed for just shy of 1,200 yards and has a school record 19 TDs. Against Florida the young freshman showed he can be the workhorse with 40 carries, 212 yards and three TDs. We all remember the Gamecocks getting crushed by Auburn in the SEC championship game, but coach Steve Spurrier has erased that game from the memory and he’ll come out and have some exciting plays for this offense to execute. He likes to have fun in bowl games and he’ll have the Gamecocks ready. South Carolina is on ATS runs of 5-1 against ACC teams, 4-0 as a favorite of up to three points and 9-4 against winning teams. Florida State is just 1-4-1 ATS against SEC competition. I’ll lay the points with the Gamecocks tonight as they win it by two TDs.

And while I have the utmost respect for Georgia coach Mark Richt, his 7-2 bowl record, this impeccable nature in getting the Dawgs ready for Bowl games and the 23 seniors who are trying to become the second straight senior class and third overall to go 4-0 in bowls... well, I still don't think they know what they're up against with this UCF defense.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Knights went 10-3 this season and wrapped up the Conference USA title with a 17-7 stifling effort of SMU on Dec. 4. It was indicatlve of how this defense has performed this season, and that includes during losses to bigger-named programs North Carolina State and Kansas State.

UCF finished up ranked 18th overall with its stop unit, and 12th in the nation by allowing just 18 points per game. The pass defense finished up 43rd, and that might have been because of a loss to Southern Miss, but when it did get into shootoutts, it generally won ball games.

So while that might spell trouble against the Bulldogs, whose strength on offense is via the air, there are teams like Arkansas, Kentucky, Florida, Auburn and Georgia Tech that won or hung in with solid efforts via the air.

The problem the Dawgs will have is trying to set up the play action and balancing things out, without running back Caleb King, against the nation's 10th-ranked rushing defense. King is one of three Bulldogs missing the bowl for academic reasons.

Very impressed with how Notre Dame finished the regular season, quietly winning six of its last eight games. That includes a strong season-ending three-game winning streak in which the Irish crushed Utah and Army by the combined score of 55-6, then went to USC and held an explosive Trojans offense to a season-low 16 points in a 20-16 road win. Over its final six wins, Notre Dame’s defense surrendered just 12 points per outing and didn’t allow more than 20 points in any of those contests. Meanwhile, first-year coach Brian Kelly’s offense finally took hold after a sluggish first month, averaging better than 27 ppg over the final eight games, even though Kelly didn’t have first-string QB Dayne Crist for the final 3½ games after Crist suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Looking back at their schedule, Notre Dame could be sitting at 10-2 right now had they had any, uh-um, Irish luck. They lost back-to-back September games to Michigan at home (28-24, giving up the winning score with 27 seconds remaining) and Michigan State on the road (getting duped on a game-winning fake field goal in overtime, with the refs clearly missing a penalty that should’ve nullified the score). Then they closed out October with a 28-27 home loss to Tulsa (the game in which Crist was hurt), giving up the winning field goal with 3:23 to play (and Notre Dame had a chance to win that one in the final seconds but backup QB Tommy Rees – after tossing four TD passes in relief of Crist – threw an INT in the end zone when his team was in chip-shot field-goal range).

While the Irish picked up steam at the end of the season, Miami went into the tank, dropping consecutive home games to Virginia Tech (31-17) and South Florida (23-20 in overtime). Those two losses – part of a 4-4 SU and 2-6 ATS finish – sent coach Randy Shannon to the unemployment line. Shannon wasn’t even allowed the courtesy to work this bowl game as a parting gift, and that’s another reason to fade Miami here. As it is, the Hurricanes players can’t be happy to be playing in El Paso on New Year’s Eve. Throw in the fact their coach got whacked and they didn’t even get a chance to “win one for the Gipper,” I mean, what’s Miami’s motivation here? And don’t give me “It’s Notre Dame! Of course Miami will be fired up!” Please, this isn’t 1986 or even 1996 – neither of these programs have the cache they once had.

Yes, the Hurricanes get starting QB Jacory Harris back for this game (Harris suffered a concussion in an embarrassing 24-19 loss at Virginia on Oct. 30 and didn’t play again until the season finale against South Florida, when he split time with freshman Stephen Morris). But I’m not so sure Harris’ return is a good thing because he regressed this year, completing less than 55% of his throws (he was at nearly 60% last year, averaging just 6.7 yards per pass attempt (that number was 8.3 last year) and he had a 14-12 TD to INT ratio (last year it was 24-17). Frankly, I love the fact Harris is facing this Notre Dame defense, which in its final three games held Utah, Army and USC to 233.3 total yards per game (138 passing ypg).FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM

Notre Dame has covered the number in six of its last seven games as an underdog (including the outright upsets of Utah and USC) and is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 when catching three points or less. And after nine straight bowl losses (and six straight non-covers), the Irish finally broke their postseason spell in the Hawaii Bowl two years ago, pounding host Hawaii (so that thing is no long hanging over the program’s collective head). … Miami has failed to cash in five of its last seven when laying points, six of eight in December, five of six after a SU loss and four of five as a favorite in bowl games.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
As for the UNDER play, I already detailed how great Notre Dame’s defense was down the stretch. Miami’s strength was also its defense, and because of the Hurricanes’ speed on that side of the ball, you can expect Notre Dame coach Kelly to be very conservative in his offensive game plan early on (he knows turnovers killed his team this year and would be the death knell in this contest). … Both teams were strong “under” plays at the end of the season (Notre Dame stayed low in its last four; Miami ended on a 6-0-1 “under” streak). Additionally, the under is on runs for the Irish of 9-1 against ACC foes and 16-7 as an underdog, and the ‘Canes carry “under” trends of 5-0-1 as a chalk, 5-1 in bowl games, 4-1 at neutral sites and 39-16 in non-conference games.

I could be wrong here and as I was proven again last night, crazy things happen all the time. If this game is played relatively clean and nothing stupid happens, Notre Dame should win this game by at least a field goal, but I'm thinking more like a touchdown. Yes, this is a big rivalry game from "back in the day", but I think it's more of a case of two teams headed in opposite directions, and Miami isn't headed down the right path... at least not right now.

Remember, as we get to these bigger bowl games with better-known teams, we're going to quickly start to see which ones are excited to be there and which ones aren't. Much like last night's Holiday Bowl in San Diego. Can you honestly tell me you think Nebraska was excited to be there? Just a few weeks ago the Huskers were serious contenders for a Big 12 Title and a trip to the Fiesta Bowl. Instead, QB Taylor Martinez hurt his ankle, limped into the Big 12 Championship Game, and Nebraska blew a 17-0 first-half lead and eventually dropped a three-point decision to Oklahoma. They go from BCS Bowl dreams to the Holiday Bowl against a 6-6 Washington Huskies that was unbelievably lucky to even be in a bowl game... and you know the rest of the story.

Why do I bring that up? Because I believe the Miami Hurricanes are in a similar boat this afternoon. There was a ton of hype surrounding this team coming into the season, but it all went south after an ugly loss at Ohio State early in the season. It's hard to believe Miami QB Jacory Harris was actually a pre-season Heisman Trophy candidate, because he seemed to be more of a turnover machine than a Heisman Trophy quarterback. Harris completed less than 55% of his passes for the season and had nearly as many INTs (12) as TD passes (14) for the season... hardly what you'd come to expect from someone who was supposed to be in the running for that prestigious award, eh?

Not only that, but he's coming into today's game off a concussion in his last contest, and although he's been cleared to play it's only going to take one hit from a Notre Dame defender and he could find himself back on the sidelines for the rest of the game. Expect that thought to be in the back of his mind the entire game as Notre Dame dials up throughout the afternoon.

HC Randy Shannon was fired before the season was even over, and the reigns of the team were handed (on an interim basis) to Jeff Stoutland. Who? Exactly. Look, Miami simply wants to get out of this game with few injuries and turn their attention to the Al Golden era next year. Golden was hired away from Temple by the Hurricanes after his impressive turnaround of the Owls program over the past three seasons. Miami players loved Randy Shannon, and they might warm up to Al Golden eventually, but they have absolutely no allegiance to Jeff Stoutland (the former offensive line coach)... and it will show today. They already commit more penalties than Notre Dame on a per game basis, but I expect the 'Canes to do some really stupid, undisciplined things today. I'm not saying Notre Dame wants to be here either, but they weren't really expected to be playing in a BCS Bowl like Miami was. The 'Canes were a major disappointment this year and they're going to cap it off by totally not caring about the Sun Bowl today.

The last time Notre Dame and Miami met was back in 1990... a 29-20 Irish win, and 20 years later I believe the result will be close to the same. Miami's last game was a 23-20 OT loss to South Florida... yes, the same South Florida team that lost to UConn on its home field. That loss opened my eyes tremendously as to how bad this Miami team really was. As you can tell from my analysis thus far, this selection is more about my negativity towards Miami than it is being excited about the Irish. But that being said, there are some good things Notre Dame can build on from their last month of games, and I believe they will do that today.

The first thing I like his how this team closed under first-year HC Brian Kelly. I like Brian Kelly. I truly believe he will turn this program around unlike Charlie Weis or Tyrone Willingham. After a 1-3 start to the season, Notre Dame finished with three rather impressive wins... and they did it with defense and not making mistakes on offense.

It looked bleak when the Irish lost QB Dayne Crist (knee), RB Armando Allen (hip) and TE Kyle Rudolph (hammy) to season-ending injuries, but freshman QB Tommy Rees has played a lot better than anyone could have anticipated in Crist's absence, throwing three TD passes in their 28-3 win over Utah two TD passes in their 20-16 win at Southern California. But again, it was the defense stepping up those final three games that gave Notre Dame a chance to win those games... and I expect that to be the case again today. The Irish allowed just three points to both Utah and Army and closed the season by allowing just 16 to USC. 12 quarters... one touchdown. And I'm supposed to think Miami's erratic offense can sustain any kind of drive against them? I think not.

Notre Dame is 6-1 in their last seven games as an underdog and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog of 3 or less points, not to mention 4-1-1 in their last six non-conference games. Miami, on the other hand, is just 2-5 in their last seven games as a favorite, 2-6 ATS in December, 1-4 ATS in their last five bowl games as a favorite and 1-5 ATS in their last six games following a SU loss. The stars align just right today for the Irish to get a much-needed bowl win as they move towards bigger and better things.

I think the Irish win this game outright. Everyone down on them for their poor showing this year but if you noticed toward the end, the kids were starting to "get it" with Kelly's offense. They beat USC, and won their last 3. Miami on the other hand has a interim coach and he's not getting the job, so no incentive there to help him get the job. New coach Golden will be there watching but Miami was holrible to finish the season and I see no reason for them to step up in this one. Forecast for cold weather further piling on the kids from South Beach. They don't like the cold and you will see it in their body language on the sidelines. Canes are another team who have struggled to name a starter at QB. Harris says he's fine but they haven't given back his job. Two QB's equals no QB's in my book. Daniels has looked horrible all year and the freshman QB did get the win in Miami. I do know that they split reps when they practiced to get ready for this game. The are very banged up and they have lost a couple of important special teams and backups to injuries and academics. Clemson coach Swinney is also another coach feeling the heat for not winning and a Meineke appearance can't be helping matters, but he will have them ready.
