The Duke's Sports

Missouri (+9) for 1.5 Units

Arizona State getting too much credit for their blowout win over Div 1AA UC Davis; at the same time, the betting public discounting Missouri after their struggle against Miami OH. We're going to take the points with veteran Tigers' team with experience on both sides of the ball. Sure, QB Gabbert is gone, new QB James Franklin was shaky, and they're hobbled with injuries; however, Arizona State has their share of injuries and not that experienced defensively. Arizona State has also burned money as a home favorite in this spread range at 2-7 ATS. On the other hand, the Tigers sport a strong 11-5 ATS September ledger and play pretty well in non-conference during the regular season with 22 straight wins. Missouri the call.

Bob Balfe

Philadelphia Phillies -131

We all know how good Roy Halladay is, but very few people know how good Brewers pitcher Shaun Marcum is. Marcum has been nearly flawless over his last three starts and has been solid all year. This should be a low scoring game which favors the red hot Phillies team. The Phillies all but have everything wrapped up, and clearly have pride at wanting to be the best team in baseball. This team knows that winning on the road in Milwaukee is huge because they might be back in a few weeks come playoff time. Halladay at this price is always a value. Take the Phillies.

Brian Gabrielle

Missouri at Arizona State
Pick: Arizona State -7.5

This is the 11th season for Gary Pinkel as the head coach for the Tigers, and since taking overthe reigns, Pinkel has turned this program into a force. The Tigers claimed 10 victories a year, has totaled 40 wins and 3 division titles over the previous 4 seasons. The Tigers have also participated in a school-record 6 straight bowl games.

That said, the 21st ranked Missouri-Tigers had a much tougher time than anticipated in the opener last week, as the Tigers labored to score in a 17-6 win over lowly Miami-Ohio. It became crystal clear that replacing QB Blaine Gabbert is going to be much, much tougher than anticipated as replacement James Franklin looked jittery in the game. In addition to the unpowerful win and shaky QB play, the Tigers had 2 key defensive players go down. Linebacker Will Ebner suffered a high ankle sprain, while defensive end Jacquies Smith dislocated his left elbow. Both players will likely miss Friday's game.

Meanwhile, the Arizona St. Sun Devils won their ninth straight season-opening matchup with a convincing 48-14 decision over UC Davis. It was also the 12th consecutive season-opening win at home, pushing the program's record in those games to 50-15-1. And, it was the fifth straight win for coach Dennis Erickson in Sun Devil openers.

Everything worked well for the Arizona St. Sun Devils , who had a strong debut in all facets of the game. Eight different players had at least 1 carry for ASU which racked up 217 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. Two scores came from Cameron Marshall, but the starting tailback finished with just 23 yards on 7 totes. True freshman Kyle Middlebrooks led the way with 62 yards in the win.

Both teams are strong against the run, so this game will likely come down to defensive play and the play of the quarterback and in both areas the Arizona St. Sun Devils have an advantage.

Arizona State 31, Missouri 21
