300♦ DENVER BRONCOS - If the same Denver defense steps on the field tonight, the one I saw in person last week against New England, then this shouldn't even be close. Not with the leadership and experience the Broncos have on their side.

Brian Dawkins is the inspirational leader, while Champ Bailey is the strong, silent type. And I want to take you back to the Cowboys game, in which Tony Romo attacked Bailey's corner non-stop in that game. Bailey took it personal and stepped up in that final series to stymie the Pokes.

Well for those unaware, Bailey and San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers have quite the rivalry thanks to Rivers' garbage jargon. Yeah, it's Rivers who likes to trash talk the veteran corner, and that is generally something that will get him fired up.

It certainly won't help the Bolts, who have gotten into a terrible habit of being pedestrian at the beginning of a game. True, they've been a second half team, but this is the wrong team to do that with. Especially since it can be so ferocious with the league's No. 1 ranked defense. That's right, since the Giants were humiliated yesterday in the Big Easy, it's the bucking Broncos who own defensive bragging rights in the NFL, allowing just 252.8 yards per game.

And this isn't a defense that is excelling because of one aspect or the other, it's a stop unit that ranks fifth against the pass (allowing 171.8 points per game) and fourth against the rush (allowing 81 points per game).

That won't bode well for the Chargers, who have scored in only one first quarter and have been outscored 28-10 in the opening period and 55-29 in the first half. Even though the Bolts hold a 72-47 advantage in the second half against their foes, falling behind a team that has revenge on the brain won't be a good idea. And make note, the Broncos have outscored opponents 82-17 in the final three periods - including a stifling 16-0 in the third quarter and incredible 43-7 in the fourth quarter and overtime.

They're eerily similar in the aforementioned category, but I'd much rather have the undefeated division rival that has had this game circled since last season's season-ending 52-21 loss, a setback that meant the Chargers were going to the playoffs while the Broncos would make New Year's Eve plans.

Denver will control this game, and gun for the outright win. Take the points.
