The second week of Monday Night Football features a pair of fan favorites coming off Week 1 games that raised several questions for the road ahead. For the Colts there are fewer questions but that’s partly thanks to the ‘W’ they walked away with in their home opener vs. Jacksonville.
Miami looked off in their road game at Atlanta, coughing up the ball four times and not getting their first (and only) points of the year until the fourth quarter.
Betting money at online sportsbooks has pushed the total on this contest down a point from 42 to 41 but it doesn’t appear the number will go any lower. Peyton Manning’s offense is nowhere near the unit he led onto the field in Super Bowl XLI, Indy’s last visit to Miami, but Manning can make good players great and for the Colts to win tonight he’s going to need to connect with a few relatively unknown faces.
Jacob Tamme is in at TE for the Colts and Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie will rotate as the No. 2 WR in place of Anthony Gonzalez, who is out for at least a month with a knee injury. Collie and Garcon have a combined nine career receptions.
The Dolphins are 0-3 straight-up in their home opener the past three years and after the display they put on last week we can only assume there is an unspoken “win or else” vibe coming from both Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano. The Fish came away with a single-digit effort just once last year under Sparano and it was in the playoffs vs. the Baltimore Ravens Super-D. Bettors should expect to see a couple of folds in the Dolphin attack tonight to try and spark the offense and don’t be surprised if the Wildcat rears its head.
Bettors should note that since 1997, home teams that lost their opener by 10 points or more are just 15-27 ATS (36-percent) in their Week 2 matchup. There were two such situations "live" in Sunday NFL action and both the Chiefs and Lions fulfilled their role, losing SU/ATS to the Oakland Raiders and Minnesota Vikings.
Road Favs are 1-2 SU/ATS so far in Week 2 and totals were 0-3 O/U - a complete reversal of the Week 1 road fav games that went 4-0 O/U.
Indy in the state of Florida:
1-2 SU/ATS last three visits to Miami
9-3 O/U last 12 visits to Miami
2-0 SU/ATS the past two years when visiting Jacksonville
6-2 O/U in Jacksonville since the Jags joined the league
*Indy and the Jags only became divisional rivals in 2002 after realignment. Prior to that the Colts were an AFC East team.
Indy is 3-2 SU/ATS in TB and 3-2 O/U but these games stretch back a long way. If anything stands out it could be that in their most recent visit, the Colts and Bucs combined to score 73 points.
Indy (-6.5) won its most important game ever in the state of Florida 29-17 when they topped the Bears in Super Bowl XLI. The 46 combined points between the Colts and Bears was one less than the posted total of 47.
