Backing Pat Fitzgerald as an underdog has brought a lot of profits to our portfolio through the years, and long-time followers will know the drill well by now it is not just that Fitzgerald has his team tactically prepared to stick around against superior opponents, but that they so often win the game. In only his fifth season, he already has 13 outright underdog upset wins, and two more that went to O.T. before falling short. Those latter two just happen to be the Wildcat bowl games the past two years, when they were tied with Auburn as +8 in regulation, and with Missouri as +12. That says a lot about the abilities of this head coach, and his staff, to bring in their team with both the right X's and O's, and also the confidence to compete against a superior opponent. But because it is still Northwestern, there has been little sex appeal attached to these sequences, and this line shows a continued case of a lack of respect, especially given the dubious closing to the regular season.

Which, subsequently, takes us to the last two Northwestern games. Yes, getting demolished by a combined 68 points vs. Illinois and Wisconsin was ugly, and the markets will not forgive those scores. But we will. First, note that they were -8 in TO ratio in those games. Second, a tired defensive front was up against two teams ideally-suited to attacking them with smashmouth football. And third, without QB Dan Persa, it was easy for their confidence to wane when falling behind in those games.

But now fast forward to this matchup. Now 6-6/235 Evan Watkins not only has a couple of games vs. quality defenses under his belt, but also the equivalent of a training camp for the offense to be built around his skills. He is a tough runner, and possesses a stronger arm than Persa, so there is plenty to work with here. And there is a lot of room for him to roam, against a weak Red Raider defense that showed no oomph vs. either the run or the pass, allowing 463 yards per game.

In truth, even the Texas Tech offense was nothing special in Tommy Tubervilles first season. For all the talk about establishing the running game, the only time they reached 200 yards was vs. Weber State, and the passing attack lacked the spark that we saw under Mike Leach. That puts a real perspective on the wood that they are laying here, since the only three times all season they won a game by this margin came vs. aforementioned Weber State, Houston and New Mexico, and they lost five times in double figures, including a pair of such defeats vs. teams that did not qualify for bowls. We call Tech hard-pressed to merely get the win here, much less a margin, and it would be no surprise if the scrappy Wildcats were once again in the hunt to the final possession.

We have sat back patiently and let the markets do their thing, and it now leaves us with a bargain price for this matchup that is impossible to pass up.

Michigan should have been among the most unlikely of teams to generate this kind of money. The Wolverines do not belong on New Year’s Day, off of an uninspiring campaign in which every one of their five losses came in double figures, and featuring arguably the worst defense for a New Year’s bowl in recent memory. The preparation for this game has been lacking in passion because of the persistent rumors that it will be the last go-round for Rich Rodriguez, as well as for many players that may transfer if he leaves (much like what happened on his arrival, a specialty system on offense does not lend itself well to transitions). And the loss of back-up QB Tate Forcier can also be an issue given how injury-prone Denard Robinson is, and how many hits he takes out of these designs. Yet a team that finished #108 in total defense, #102 in scoring defense, #94 in rushing defense and #96 in pass efficiency defense, is now being priced as though they can be right in the hunt against a superior and more cohesive team from a better conference. Mississippi State brings the continuity that Michigan lacks, especially with Dan Mullen signing a recent contract extension. The Bulldogs also bring the defense that Michigan lacks, with their quickness a significant weapon in terms of holding Robinson in check, especially having to go up against running QB’s like Cam Newton and Jeremiah Masoli already. With Mullen having coached a spread attack with a lot of designed QB runs throughout his career, there is little from the Rich Rodriguez playbook he has not seen, with FR Jameon Lewis also able to emulate Robinson pretty well with the scout team in practice. And State brings an offense capable of controlling the ball for long stretches against this soft defensive front, keyed by a physical ground game that can hammer the Wolverines in the trenches, and an improved passing attack that netted 415 yards in the last two games, eight quarters over which they produced had nine plays of 20 yards or more. While they will have to do it without top WR Chad Bumphus, they piled up 31 points and 398 yards at Mississippi in the finale with Bumphus only catching one pass. With added prep time to adjust for his absence there are no major concerns, and the can comfortably control this game flow.

It's dangerous laying such a big number with a team like Texas Tech who allows over 30 points per game to their opponents and almost 500 yards of offense. In games against fellow bowlers, Tech went just 3-3 straight up allowing 34 points per game while getting outscored by 8 points. Big 10 dogs are a very respectable 65% spread winners the last 50 or so times they have taken points in the bowls. With teams taking over a touchdown now on a 66% run after Thursdays results.
