Usually going with a new head coach in his first game is a losing proposition at the betting window, but we were unfazed last week in selecting Gene Chizik to win big in his debut at his alma mater Auburn. What we got was exactly what we expected, a 37-13 rout of a Louisiana Tech team that was totally overmatched and outclassed. We reiterate here what we said in that write-up with us continuing to expect to get plenty of line value with the Tigers early on due to last year’s underachieving effort that got Tommy Bowden fired and OC Tommy Franklin axed by mid-season. Teams have a history of bouncing back from a poor pointspread effort the following year and for Auburn that should continue this week in the conference opener against Mississippi State. These teams opened the SEC slate against one another last year and the result was one of those uninspiring Auburn efforts we spoke of earlier with the Tigers earning a bizarre 3-2 final over the Bulldogs that set an ominous tone for things to come. This year, the word “ominous” should only be used in regards to Miss State’s fortunes. Sylvester Croom is out after producing four losing campaigns in five seasons in Starkville, and the Bulldogs CLEARLY appear to be the worst team in the SEC for 1st year HC Dan Mullen. MSU does not have anywhere near the personnel for the spread offense that Mullen enjoyed as OC at Florida while the Auburn offense looked very good last week with QB Chris Todd completing 17 of 26 passes for 255 yards and two scores while both Ben Tate and Onterio McCalebb had 100 yard days on the ground. The 5th year seniors at Miss State have managed just one offensive TD and two field goals in the previous four meetings vs. Auburn (last year’s game was lowest scoring game EVER at Miss St), whose defense allowed La Tech just one offensive TD last week, a drive that was severely aided by three penalties that went against the Tigers. Keep in mind that in last year’s one-point win, Auburn outgained Mississippi State 315-116. They also have revenge from a 19-14 loss here at home two years ago (Bulldogs’ only winning season for Croom). MSU has just four returning starters on defense and the team was 1-4 ATS as road dogs last year while allowing 36.5 PPG. Auburn is our 20* SEC Game of the Month.

When Central Michigan visits Michigan State in a non-conference clash today they will do so knowing they are 9-2 SU and 9-0-2 ATS away off an away game and 3-0 ATS in their last three games against Big 10 opposition. Michigan State is 0-7-1 ATS as a favorite in games before taking on Notre Dame this decade. When Tulane hosts BYU they catch the Cougars off last week's huge upset win over Oklahoma. The Green Wave is 4-0 ATS against ranked opposition under head coach Bob Toledo Coach Toledo is also 8-0 ATS as a dog versus and opponent off a double-digit win. On the other side, BYU is 0-5-1 ATS in its last five non-conference road games. Play On: Tulane

Utah vs. San Jose St.

For a number of different reasons I feel that the Utes are going to come out firing on all cylinders and believe we're getting great value on the visiting side: The No. 17 Utes go for their 16th straight victory when they hit the road to take on the Spartans on Saturday night. Utah defeated Utah State 35-17 last Friday night, as junior college transfer Terrance Cain passed for 286 yards and two touchdowns in his Utes debut. Utah finished with 519 yards of offense and held Utah State to 342 - 96 of which came on Robert Turbin’s touchdown run in the first quarter. Judging by San Jose State’s performance last week, Utah may not have to be in top form to continue its run. The Spartans were pounded 56-3 at then-No. 4 Southern California, getting outgained 620-121 and 342-9 on the ground and I'm expecting another lop-sided affair. Utah has won 10 straight non-conference games - five of which came on the road - and taken its last eight road games overall, three shy of the school record. It's interesting to note that dating back to last year the Spartans are a poor 3-4 ATS in non-conference games and 0-5 ATS its last five overall. When taking into account all of these factors I have to recommend a play on UTAH! *8*

Ohio vs. North Texas

North Texas dominated a better MAC team last week, as they defeated one of last year’s Cinderella teams in Ball State. What was even more impressive is that they were controlling that game throughout, even with it being on the road. Their offense was dominant as well, rolling up chunks of yards on the ground and through the air. Head coach Todd Dodge is under tremendous pressure to perform this year. His hire was questioned by many because he was only a very successful high school coach, without proving himself in college. However, he has now assembled a very good offense, filled with athletes across the field. His freshman son is now the starting quarterback and has proven to be effective at getting the ball to the skilled players around him. Ohio is a step down from Ball State, so I don’t expect them to stop North Texas. The Mean Green’s win over the Cardinals last week was much more dominant than the final score indicated, as they controlled that game from start to finish. The Bobcats meanwhile let Connecticut absolutely pound them last week. I look for North Texas to come out as the much more motivated team in order to get a win in front of their home fans.

UCLA vs. Tennessee
UCLA returns 16 starters from last years team. I like playing on teams in the early going who have played with each other for awhile. Both teams have started the season out at 1-0. UCLA is 6-0 ATS against SEC opponents since 1992. Tennessee is 1-6 ATS against PAC 10 opponents since 1992. UCLA is 4-0 ATS overall vs Tennessee since 1992. Bruins are 20-7 ATS in their last 27 games as an underdog. Bruins are 14-5 ATS in their last 19 games in September. Bruins are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games as a road underdog of 3.5-10.0. Bruins are 20-8 ATS in their last 28 games on grass. Bruins are 27-11 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. Volunteers are 3-8-2 ATS in their last 13 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10.0. Volunteers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games. We'll play UCLA for 4 units today!
