WUNDERDOG
Winnipeg at Chicago
Pick: Under 5.5
Winnipeg may have been overcome by the emotional drama of stepping onto the ice as the Winnipeg Jets for the first time in 15 years in this city. This has been a highly competitive series with three of the last five meetings resolved in a shootout, so Winnipeg can hang here. Chicago is a solid defensive team, and it shows even brighter vs. a team with a winning percentage below .400 where they have played seven consecutive UNDERs, and 10-4 to the UNDER when facing an opponent that allowed 5 or more in their previous game, a situation that Winnipeg has countered by playing four straight UNDERs of their own when facing a team that scored 5 or more in their previous game. The Jets (Thrashers) have played UNDER in five of their last six on the road as well. The UNDER gets the call in this one.

This is one of those wagers where I feel the oddsmakers have made a major statement by casting a relatively low posted total even though we have a pair of struggling starting pitchers on the mound. Milwaukee veteran Randy Wolfe allowed multiple homers including a grand-slam back in the Divisional playoff round while veteran Kyle Lohse of St. Louis was pelted for SIX runs in his 2011 postseason mound assignment which was on the road. The good news for Lohse is that he is back in front of the home fans this evening and is facing a Milwaukee offense which has had serious postseason problems (.211 combined batting average) on the highway. My database research indicates that Randy Wolfe the past two years has been a solid UNDER wager (13-3) when cast as a road underdog of 150-or-less which is the case tonight. This senior circuit championship series has seen the scoreboard operators kept busy in part due to the fact that St. Louis superstar Albert Pujols (.636 average) has been sizzling at the plate and has ultimately given his teammates better collective pitches to look at. Even with a pair of aces on the mound on Wednesday we nearly saw “over” the total in the second inning before both sides received stellar mound performances and I am expecting more of the same this evening. I will wrap up this analysis with an UNDEFEATED totals angle which sees Milwaukee ever since Ron Roenicke was named manager going 8-0 UNDER/ROAD versus poor base-running teams who average less than 0.6 stolen bases per contest
