Jimmy Thompson Guaranteed Selections

Milwaukee/Philadelphia over 9

The Phillies have feasted on Jeff Suppan in the past and nothing will change tonight. Philadelphia may have the worst bullpen in baseball right now the way they have blown save after save the past month. If they were getting any reliable bullpen work they would have already clinched the NL East crown. The Phillies throw Happ tonight who has struggled recently with his stuff and an injury and was rocked in his only career appearance against Milwaukee. The lefthanded bats of the Phillies will enjoy their matchup with Suppan, but look for Jayson Werth to also have a big game. We expect that Braun and Cameron will carry the load for the Brewers offense as they try to finish the season above .500 for the third straight year. Take this game over as runs will start early and continue right through the ninth!

Its amazing to me that Mississippi is ranked #4 in the nation. I don’t even think they are one of the top 4 teams in the SEC. Ole Miss has played weak competition this season and will face a tough test against an improved South Carolina team who by the way did beat this team last year in Mississippi. Ole Miss does have a great offense, but they will be going up against a tough South Carolina Defense on the road. If Mississippi is indeed worthy of a #4 ranking why is this line set so low? Look for the Gamecocks to bring the Rebels back down to earth tonight. Take South Carolina.

Brad Penny as a Giant is 2-0 at home with under a 3 ERA, and has allowed 8 hits in 14 innings of work. Take into account the team batting average the past 10 games, and the stronger bullpen, at home, and you have a winner. Lots of off field distractions for the Cubs, and they are not a good road team, even with Dempster on the hill tonight and you have a home winner with the Giants. Brad Penny off a horrible performance against the bad ass Dodgers, he will show up focused to make amends after getting yanked in the second inning. LA does that to allot of good pitchers.

Dodgers vs. Washington
Play: Under 9.5

For a number of different reasons I feel the value in this game is on the "under": The Dodgers are in the hunt for their second straight playoff berth Thursday as they travel to Washington to take on the leagues worst team. LA hands the ball to Vicente Padilla (3-0, 2.96); the right-hander, who began this season with Texas, allowed two or fewer runs in four straight starts after his contract was purchased from Triple-A Albuquerque on Aug. 27. Padilla is searching for his fourth straight win over the Nationals dating back to Aug. 18, 2005, and has a 2.37 ERA in those outings; although he struggled his last time out, I look for him to be sharp today. Trying to avoid their second straight 100-loss season, Washington will turn to J.D. Martin (5-4, 4.21), who is seeking a career-high third win in a row. Martin, who has never faced the Dodgers, has allowed two earned runs in four straight starts, including Friday’s 6-5 win in New York. The right-hander pitched 5 1-3 innings as Washington held on for the victory. It's important to point out that the total has gone under the number in six of Washington's last nine games overall while the Dodgers have seen it go under the number in 15 of 25 games vs. teams with losing records in the second half of the season. I look for a strong game from Padilla as he continues his push to try and crack into the starting rotation and in his teams bid to finish the season strong and lock down a playoff spot, and when taking into account how well Martin has pitched lately and coupled with these strong O/U trends, I believe the sharp money is on the UNDER!

Mississippi vs. South Carolina

I feel that Mississippi is one of the most over-rated teams coming into this season. They do have some talented players, especially at the quarterback position, but they are being ranked as a top five program in the country. The Rebels struggled for most of the game against Memphis a few weeks ago, and their only other game was against a weak opponent last week. South Carolina appears to be better than in previous years as well, as quarterback Stephen Garcia is doing a better job at running the offense than the previous Gamecock quarterbacks. In addition, South Carolina has been tested already this season with games against N.C. State and Georgia. They also played a better Sun Belt Conference team in Florida Atlantic. Meanwhile, Mississippi’s star defensive end, Greg Hardy is banged up for this game and will his snaps very limited. He’s presence makes a huge difference for the Rebels defense and having his snaps limited is a huge problem for them. South Carolina has done very well at home as an underdog over the last few years. They seem to get up for these big home games, while having a letdowns against the weaker SEC teams. I look for them to have a huge homefield advantage tonight as well. South Carolina doesn’t even have to win to cover this point spread either. Look for the Gamecocks to get the point spread cover.
