OC Dooley

3 Units West Virginia-3

The key to this selection actually surrounds what transpired one year ago when West Virginia lost a New Year’s Day matchup in the Gator Bowl against an opponent (Florida State) from the Atlantic Coast Conference. To make a long story short nearly the entire country was rooting “against” West Virginia in that contest since it was the FINAL GAME for legendary Seminoles head coach Bobby Bowden who was literally kicked out by the school in a premature exit. In an ironic twist West Virginia has already announced that their head coach Bill Stewart will be booted off the sidelines following the 2011 campaign, which brings some special motivation this evening to some Mountaineer players who want to make their leader look good. In three years as West Virginia head coach, Stewart has posted a positive overall record (27-11) but that apparently is not good enough for the school administration that was spoiled by the record that former leader Rich Rodriguez posted. Even though his overall record is better than that of Rodriguez who made an ugly exit from the Mountaineers program, Stewart has essentially lost his job and will spend 2011 in “lame duck” status. Not only is West Virginia playing for their head coach this evening, they get a shot at “revenge” versus the ACC Conference which defeated them last New Year’s Day. For those who may have forgotten the ACC league had great difficulty early in 2010 beating “non” conference opposition and that trend continued yesterday in the Bowls as Georgia Tech was nearly shutout against a team (Air Force) from a “non” BCS qualifying conference. Another key factor is tonight’s handicap is that West Virginia star running back Noel Divine who has battled a sore ankle all season, is finally HEALTHY courtesy of some extra time off. One year ago Divine had 7 runs of at least 50-yards in length, including an 88 yard scamper. A healthy star running back takes some of the heat off West Virginia’s “first year” starting quarterback who gained some confidence in the final regular season contest by passing for 352 yards. Tonight’s Champs Sports Bowl pits a high-octane offense (North Carolina State) up against an unyielding defense (West Virginia). Normally in the postseason, superior “defensive” squads prosper as they tend to dominate at the line-of-scrimmage where games are ultimately won or lost. I am fully aware that North Carolina State star quarterback Russell Wilson (26 touchdowns) is ranked #19 nationally in passing, but West Virginia just happens to have a lofty #11 national ranking when DEFENDING the pass (just 166 aerial yards per game allowed). In addition the Mountaineers are ranked #2 nationally is scoring DEFENSE as they for the entire season are permitting less than 13 points per contest. West Virginia did NOT allow an opponent to score more than 21 points in any game during the regular season and permitted a grand total of just 15 touchdowns, which was second-FEWEST in the nation. Entering this postseason there has been much negative attention regarding the Big East which is looked at as a “weak” football conference. It is interesting to note that the first Bowl team from the Big East to take the field in the postseason (Louisville) ended up on the WINNING side of the scoreboard. This evening West Virginia is attempting to wrap up a campaign with “double digit” wins (10) for just the seventh time in SCHOOL HISTORY, which tells me that Bill Stewart is a much better head coach than most people think
