Jr Tips

Angels at Yankees

After dispatching the Yankees in the first round of the playoffs in 2002 and 2005, the Angels meet New York for the first time in the AL championship series starting tonight, weather permitting. John Lackey pitches for the high-flying Angels, who won their fifth AL West title in six seasons under manager Mike Scioscia and then swept wild-card Boston in the division series. Now back in the postseason after missing out in 2008, New York swept Minnesota to reach the ALCS for the first time in five years and goes with CC Sabathia, who could get three starts in the best-of-seven matchup. The Angels are the only AL club with a winning regular-season record against the Yankees since 1996 and New York had the best record in the major leagues during the regular season at 103-59, and the Angels were second at 97-65 as the teams split 10 games. New York worked out in a drizzle Thursday morning as the Angels put on red ski caps and red sweat shirts but didn't hit on the field during the afternoon rain. Friday's gametime forecast calls for drizzle, and a 41-degree temperature plus 15-20 mph wind will make it feel as if it were 25, according to AccuWeather.com. Alex Rodriguez is on fire as he batted .455 (5 for 11) with two homers and six RBIs in the last series aginst the twins. Lackey will start for Los Angeles after pitching 7 1/3 shutout innings last week in the Angels' postseason opener against Boston and will have the job of slowing Alex and the Yankees down. He faced the Yankees once this year, allowing two runs over seven inning in a July 12 win. Both starters will have had extra time off as Sabathia will have rested for eight days since beating the Twins and Lackey for seven since defeating the Red Sox so they will have their best stuff. This first game will be more like a chess game in the rain and the first team to make a mistake will win in a low scoring game.

TAKE UNDER 8.5

New York Islanders at Buffalo
Pick: Buffalo -180

Two teams that have been getting opposite results will face-off in Buffalo tonight as the Sabres put their unbeaten mark to the test against the winless Islanders. Although the Sabres did suffer an OT loss in their opener, they have been playing superbly on the defensive end. They are also getting outstanding goal tending from Ryan Miller, who has yet to allow more than two to slip through the net in each of the four games. The season shows just five goals allowed or 1.125 per contest. That will be a tough chore for the Islanders’ offense that has generated just nine goals in four games, just over two per game, as on the other end they have seen 13 slip through the net. You can't feel too good either about the fact that the Islanders are 0-9 in their last nine as a dog of +151 to +200. The Sabres are sporting a 42-16-2 mark at home against clubs that are .400 or less. I'm going with the Sabres in this one.
