The Aggies are coming off their best season and they come into this Potato Bowl game red hot. They've won their last 6 games of the season. They have a well-balanced offensive attack and the nation's 8th best defense. Toledo won their last game, but they lost their previous 2, which cost them a chance to win the MAC title and play in a better bowl. In their last games of the season Toledo beat Akron 35-23 and Utah State beat Idaho 45-9. Chuckie Keeton leads the Utah State offense and he not only passed for 3,144 yards with 27 TD, but he was also the Aggies 2nd leading rusher with 527 yards with 7 TD. RB Kerwynn Williams and WR Matt Austin each averaged over 15 yards per catch this season and Toledo had issues against the pass this season only ranking 117th in the nation. Toledo is 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games. Utah State is 5-0 ATS vs. a team with a winning record, 16-5-1 ATS in their last 22 non-conference games, and they have an Under record of 11-3 in their last 14 games. Have to go with the Aggies in this one. They have a much better defense and their offense will show up in spades at Bronco Stadium in Boise on December 15th.

Wunderdog

Toledo vs. Utah State
Pick: Toledo +10.5

The Toledo Rockets bring a high-powered running game into the Idaho Potato Bowl vs. the Utah State Aggies. The Rockets' running attack is led by David Flullen who ran for 1,456 yards on the season with 13 TDs. He is complimented by QB Terrence Owens who threw for 8.1 yards per attempt, but has also carried for 381 yards and five TDs as well. This offense puts up 32.9 points per game which leaves a tall order for Utah State laying double digits. The Rockets defense hasn't been the greatest, allowing 27.3 points per game. But, they are very opportunistic, finishing the season with 17 INTs. Utah State ran the table in the WAC and comes into the game on a six-game winning streak. They are a more balanced team with an offense that generates over 30 ppg and a defense ranked No. 15 in the country, but will get a stiff test in this one. Both of these squads bring Bowl experience as Toledo tasted the fruits of a Bowl win a year ago over Air Force, while Utah State lost to another MAC team in Ohio. There is definitely a different "pedigree" here when it comes to Bowls, as Toledo has been a very good Bowl team at 8-4, while Utah State is just 1-6. I think that Toledo's experience of winning a close one last year will propel them to the win here. Take Toledo.

Red Dog Sports

SMU at Rhode Island
Play: SMU

URI has just two wins and one was in overtime at Auburn. They lost at home to Norfolk State by 12 points and to George Mason (outrebounded 50-31). Only five players scored for URI in the NSU game and their top four scorers shoot 39% or less from the field. Munford scores 18 ppg and Malesevic 12.6 ppg but others are under 10ppg. Rhode Island is just 8-20-2 ATS in their last 30 games on Saturday.

Larry Brown's SMU team is 3-0 on the road and beat Hofstra easily in their last road game. They are 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 games. They are 8-1 SU while URI is 2-7. The Mustangs get balanced scoring from 5 players at 9 ppg or more:

Jones 16
Russell 15
Manuel 13
Cunningham 9.5
Williams 9

Santa Clara vs. PacificFREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Pick: PacificFOR FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
The Tigers are 5-4 on the season but the schedule has been impressive to say the least. Two close losses against Fresno St. and Oral Roberts set the stage for big wins over Xavier and St. Mary's that took place in Anaheim before a loss against California and then a tough loss at Gonzaga as the Tigers fell behind early and could not catch up. They shot 46.9 percent from the floor but were outscored by 12 points at the free throw line which was a big difference. Pacific then had an overtime win against followed by a win against San Francisco last Saturday and when it is all said and done, the Tigers have played the 16th toughest schedule in the country. They are deep and very balanced and in four home games, they are shooting 50.9 percent from the floor including 44.7 percent from long range. Santa Clara is off to a 5-2 start which includes a quality win at St. Louis in its second game of the season. Both losses came in overtime to the Broncos could feasibly be undefeated right now but I feel the record is skewed because of an easy schedule that is ranked 279th in the nation. The Tigers have not forgotten about last season when they lost in Santa Clara in overtime despite shooting 52 percent from the floor including 46.7 percent from long range. Pacific heads to play a rematch at St. Mary's on Wednesday and that will be no easy task so the Tigers know this is a pretty big game in order to keep their current RPI of 48 intact.

An uptempo team against a slow, defensive one...who will control the tempo? Both teams played last night, so there will be some tired legs and the Memphis Grizzlies are 4-0 under the total playing on no days rest, plus the under is 14-6 in the Grizzlies last 20 road games. Memphis is tops in the NBA in point allowed, while the under is 20-8-1 in the Utah Jazz's last 29 home games vs. a team with a road winning percentage of greater than .600. Look for a slower paced game than oddsmakers expect; Play the Grizzlies/Jazz under the total.

I successfully played against the Mavericks at Toronto last night. Favored by five points, the Mavs lost by more than 20.

The Raptors, already playing without "stars" Bargnani and Lowry, dominated so much that they didn't even need to play DeMar DeRozan and Jose Calderon for much of the second half, arguably their two best remaining "healthy" players.

There were a number of reasons why I felt that the Mavs were potentially in a difficult spot last night. I've pasted an excerpt from that writeup below. (You can read Ben's full analysis here.)
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
"...The Mavericks had last night off. However, they were off a double-OT heartbreaker at Boston the previous night, a game that may still have some lingering effects. The Mavs, who play a "revenge" game at Minnesota tomorrow, are also playing their 10th consecutive game, which was in a different city from their previous game. That stretch started with a blowout home loss vs. LA. The Mavs then traveled to Philly and then Chicago, before returning home. That was only for a single game though and they were right back on the road for games at LA, Phoenix and Houston. Then, it was back home - but again only for one game. That was followed by their current road trip. I mentioned that the Mavs play at Minnesota tomorrow. Considering that the T-Wolves upset them at Dallas earlier, that could be some cause for looking ahead. Either way, its not a situation in which the Mavs have fared well. Indeed, they're a dismal 5-15 SU/ATS the last 20 times that the played the front end of a back-to-back spot. That includes an 0-4 SU (1-3 ATS) record in that situation, since the beginning of November. Its also worth noting that the Mavs are a poor 6-10 ATS the last 16 times that they were listed as road favorites in the 3.5 to 6 range ... "

True, the Mavs are now playing the second of back to back games and also their third game in the last four nights. However, the T-Wolves are in the same boat. They played a hard-fought game vs. the Nuggets on Wednesday and played again at New Orleans last night. The fact that they won both of those games could potentially have them a little complacent here.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
On the other hand, I expect the Mavs to be highly motivated. Not only were they embarrassed with their effort last night but they were also embarrassed by these same T-Wolves, at Dallas on 11/12.

Coach Carlisle said this of last night's game: ''We played poorly and they played great. I don't know how else to sum it up. It's as simple as that.''
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
OJ Mayo added: ''The whole team played like garbage tonight. We didn't play the way we're capable of playing and when that happens, you get beat by 20.''
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
While they've struggled when playing the front end of back-to-back games, the Mavs have gone 2-1 SU/ATS the last three times that they played the second game in those situations, most recently winning at Phoenix on 12/6.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
On the other hand, the T-Wolves are 0-4 SU their last four in that situation, most recently a double-digit loss at Boston. (They're 3-14 SU their last 17, when playing the second of b2b games, dating back to last February.)
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
With the Mavs at 13-2 SU (12-3 ATS) their last 15 visits here, motivated to avenge the earlier loss and motivated to bounce back with a better effort from last night, consider grabbing the points.

After stumbling vs. formidable Big East entry DePaul on Wednesday night, ASU faces a foe a few steps down on the opponent ladder. Doubt laboring Ivy rep Dartmouth can keep pace with Herb Sendek’s new and explosive backcourt featuring ballyhooed frosh Jahii Carson (17.9 ppg) and Liberty transfer Evan Gordon (11.8 ppg; brother of NBA G Eric). All but one of Sendek’s eight wins this season have been by double-digits, and expect Sun Devils to gradually extend the margin at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe.

The Tide started the season high with three straight wins but a pair of losses now finds them behind last year’s 21-12 (.636 win percentage) pace. Fortunately for Alabama’s four-returning starters – try as they may – the Rams just can’t beat the SEC. Dating back to 1990, VCU is 0-14 SU and 5-9 ATS versus the Superior Egotistic Conference, including 0-5 ATS at home. It looks to be ‘The Same Old Song’ for Shaka Smart’s squad 47 years later as Bama is 8-2-1 ATS as a dog off back-to-back SU losses and 2-0 ATS versus the Atlantic-10 after arriving off consecutive setbacks. And though we respect Smart, don’t expect a ‘different meaning’ tonight in Richmond – grab the points as the visiting team improves to 11-0 ATS in Rams/SEC skirmishes. We recommend a 1-unit play on Alabama.

Indiana has been struggling this year without Danny Granger but I like their chances against the Pistons Saturday. Both teams are coming into this game off a back-to-back and that tends to lead to lower scoring games. That fits right into what the Pacers want to do as they are only allowing 91.3 ppg on 40.9% shooting. Detroit on the other hand has trouble scoring, but they also are only an average defensive team. Indiana is starting to pick up some stream with a couple of double digit wins in a row at home, now they need to go on the road and prove to themselves they can win. Indiana does just that on Saturday.

FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
I'm predicting the Charlotte Bobcats to put an end to their 10-game losing streak tonight with a victory over the Orlando Magic. Charlotte's schedule could not have been tougher during this skid as nine of the 10 teams it lost to currently have winning records. Six of those 10 losses came by 8 points or fewer.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Finally, the Bobcats get a break in their schedule as they'll face a team with a losing record in the Orlando Magic tonight. Orlando is in a letdown spot following a big win over Golden State last night. That also means that the Magic will be tired as this will be the second of a back-to-back and the 3rd game in 4 days for them.
FOR THE LARGEST SELECTION OF FREE SERVICE PLAYS VISIT THESPREAD.COM
Orlando is 13-26 ATS against division opponents over the last 3 seasons. The Magic are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 road games vs. a team with a losing home record. Orlando is 0-4 ATS in its last 4 vs. Eastern Conference foes. Charlotte simply wants this game more, and it will be the fresher team. Bet the Bobcats Saturday.

If history holds true, good offensive teams have problems playing up to their potential after a long period of rest. I'll take the under as Utah State is very good on defense and both teams have supposedly potent offenses. The layoff should leave them rusty. Take the under.

Toledo has covered the spread in all five games this season as an underdog. This is also a team that came very close to running the table this season, meaning this line is giving them basically no respect. Utah State has faded of late in December, going just 1-4 in its last 5 games played in this month.

The Catamounts have already played a competitive schedule facing off against Illinois, Wichita State and Western Kentucky. They have a record under .500 but they've stayed within 20 in every game. Western Carolina is 8-1 ATS in their last 9 road games and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games overall. The Hoyas are just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games and haven't been overly impressive to start the season.
