No Illinois vs. Fresno State
Play: Northern Illinois -1

Fresno is returning to the scene of the crime in Boise where they were systemactically destroyed by Boise State 51-0. Not sure any team who takes a beatdown like that deserves a bowl game but beating Illinois at seasons end did wonders for them. The weather is snow predicted and 35 degrees which is a huge disadvatage for for FSU here.

I like the fact No Illinois lost their conference championship and a coach in the process, as they will be hell bent on redemption come Saturday. Their offense and running game is solid and they put up 491 yards per game their last 3 games. As an FSU backer you have to be very concerned about the Bulldogs allowing 31 ppg and 4 yards per carry your last 3 games against a team who avergaed 8 yards per carry on the ground in their last 3 games, especially with your best linebacker out for this game.

Fresno will compete, but cannot trade punches all day long here in this one. Northern Illinois by 8

No. Illinois 38 Fresono 30

Fresno St +1.02 over Northern Illinois

The Huskies always have a good regular season and one of the main reasons they do is because they play in the weak MAC. However, once they reach the preseason, all of its flaws or lack of talent gets exposed and that’s the price you pay for playing mediocre teams all season. A close look reveals that over the last three Bowl games in the last three years with a lot of the same players, the Huskies are 0-3 and have not come close to covering in any, losing by a combined 41½-points to the number. The Huskies only game this season against a non-conference Bowl participant was against an average Illinois squad way back in week 3 and the Huskies were beaten 28-22. That score is actually flattering to Northern Illinois, as the Illini ran for 319 yards and averaged 6½-yards per carry. That’s where the Bulldogs thrive, on the ground, where Robby Rouse, despite missing two games, was 13th in the nation in rushing yards. Expect plenty of Rouse, plenty of play-action and once again expect the Huskies to go home with their tails between their legs. There’s a reason why Northern Illinois lays an egg every post-season and that’s because they’re good in the MAC but they’re not good anywhere else. Play Fresno St +1.02 (Risking 2 units).

BYU –11½ over UTEP

Teams that back into a Bowl game have a horrible history and the Texas El Paso Miners certainly qualify as such. Here’s a Miner team that opened the year 5-1 and finished the year 1-5 for an overall record of 6-6. Meanwhile, the Cougars are the opposite, as they opened the year with a 2-5 record and finished it up 4-1. So, for two 6-6 teams, 11½-points sure seems like a lot of lumber but it’s difficult to pull the trigger on a team that figuratively and literally limps into this game. The Miners #1 QB, Trevor Vittatoe is likely to go but he’s a hit away from calling it a day. He has a bad ankle sprain and his chances right now of playing are 50-50. Without him, the Miners are in a heap of trouble. BYU is completely jacked up for this contest. Reports out of practice say the team can’t wait for this game. The Cougars have a whole slew of seniors that will play their final college game and they want to go out with a win. Down the stretch the Cougars put up big offensive numbers and they almost pulled off a big upset when they lost to #20 Utah by a single point in the final week of the season. Freshman QB Jake Heaps had a strong second half and wants more than anything to send off the seniors with a win. BYU was written off for dead after the seventh week of the season and here they are in a Bowl game and you cannot underestimate a club that has huge momentum coming into a Bowl game, especially against a team that got here the complete opposite way. Play: BYU –11½ (No bets).

Marc Lawrence

New York Knicks at Cleveland Cavaliers
Prediction: New York Knicks

After a promising 5-5 start, the Cavs - like LeBron James - are heading south. She might want to take a trip to the Big Apple as and Tonight they take on Amar?e Stoudemire and the surging Knicks. Even with LeBron in a Cleveland jersey, the Knicks have owned the series from an ATS standpoint of late, posting an 11-6-1 mark, including 7-3 ATS in Cleveland. And speaking of LeBron, the beatdown laid on by him and his boys two weeks ago in Cleveland has the Cavs in search of a new identity and it's nowhere to be found on this roster. Knicks pick and roll. We recommend a 1-unit play on New York.

Ohio vs. Troy
Play: Over 58

This play is really based on the fact that Troy is all about scoring and getting scored on. Even better Over is 21-7 in TROY last 28 non-conference games. Ohio was terrible last time out so expect their offense to be pumped to be much much better. This will be a shootout as both teams score 30 plus.

Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Denver Nuggets
Play: Denver Nuggets -10½

Denver has a powerful, uptempo offense and they take on a tired, defenseless Minnesota team playing its fourth game in five night, plus the second of a back to back road spot. Think Denver will run right at them? The Nuggets also won't be in a good mood after losing Thursday on a last second shot to San Antonio on this same floor. Denver is 11-2 at home, while the young Timberwolves are terrible on the road. Look for a big run-and-gun win by the home team. Play the Nuggets.

Los Angeles Clippers vs. Chicago Bulls
Play: Los Angeles Clippers +10

The Los Angeles Clippers will look to win for the second time in as many nights when the pay a visit to the division leading Chicago Bulls Saturday night at the United Center. The Clippers topped the Detroit Pistons 109-88 Friday night behind 24 points and 17 rebounds from their dynamic rookie Blake Griffin for their first road win of the season. They’ll look to build on the momentum gained from that victory against a Bulls team that won’t be at full strength Saturday night. Center Joakim Noah will miss his first game of the season and is expected to sit out 8-10 weeks as he recovers from surgery on his right thumb. Noah’s 14 pts and 12 rebs per game will definitely be missed, as will his defensive presence as the Bulls look to contend with Blake Griffin who recorded his 14th straight double-double Friday. This will be the first meeting this season between the two, however, the Cippers have won the last two in the series, including a 90-82 victory at the United Center last February. Friday night’s victory was the first time this season the Cippers held a team under 100 points away from the Staples Center. Look for them to build on that defensive performance with another solid outing against a tough, but depleted Bulls team. Play on the Los Angeles Clippers (+) the point s for 1 unit.

UTEP vs. BYU
Play: UTEP +11.5

The Bowl season gets underway with the UTEP Miners squaring off vs the BYU Cougars. This is a BYU team that graduated a lot of offensive firepower, therefore that side of the ball has diminished considerably from what we have seen in the last few years. It will make it difficult to take down a double-digit number in this one vs UTEP. There should also be some motivational help in the stands for the Miners as the trip here from El Paso to Albuquerque is just about 250 miles, or 4.5 hours by car. The Cougars inexperience has shown itself the most playing away from home where they have recorded just a single win on the season. They did finish on a roll to end the regular season as they covered all of their last four games. That has been a huge negative in Bowl games as teams that cover their last four regular season games are just 42-66 ATS in their Bowl game as a favorite. Those bad fortunes take a turn for the worse if they are favored by double-digits as they are 19-37 ATS when giving doubles. UTEP head coach Mike Price is 17-6 ATS as an underdog of 10.5 to 21 points. My computer matchup likes the Miners here and so do I.

UTEP +12

The New Mexico Bowl on Saturday as an NCAAF matchup of two 6-6 teams as the UTEP Miners take on the BYU Cougars, and this line seems inflated in favor of UTEP due to how these teams finished the season.

The college football; latest line from Bodog for this is UTEP +12, with the betting odds set at -110.

While we understand that BYU won four of its last five games while UTEP lost five of their last six, we still feel this line is skewed because the Cougars had the good fortune of finishing up vs. some terrible defenses while UTEP got its running game going again late in the year, which should be the key to this NCAAF odds outcome.

The Miners were at their best vs. the NCAAF betting offs this season when they were outrushing their opponents, and after somehow getting away from the run on midseason, UTEP did outrush two of their last three opponents, and not so coincidentally, they went 2-0 in NCAA betting on those occasions. First they won their only game outright in the last six vs. SMU and then they covered the number in a narrow 31-28 loss to Tulsa in the season finale.

Joseph Banyard rushed for 155 yards in that finale, and we like his chances of coming up big again on Saturday vs. a BYU run defense that allowed a poor 4.8 yards per carry on the road this season.

As for the Cougars, they took advantage of shoddy defenses like New Mexico, Colorado State and UNLV in NCAAF betting down the stretch, as those secondaries made freshman quarterback Jake Heaps look better than he really is. Remember that Heaps finished the year still completing only 55.4 percent of his passes and he averaged a very low 5.9 yards per pass attempt, so we simply do trust him giving this many points in a bowl game in his freshman year.

Even with their stumbling finish, UTEP looks like the play at this inflated price in this New Mexico Bowl NCAAF matchup.

EZWINNERS

BYU Cougars -11.5

The New Mexico Bowl is a battle of two 6-6 teams as the BYU Cougars battle the UTEP Miners. These teams have identical records, but the Cougars finished the season winners of four out of their last five games with their only loss in that stretch coming in their last game by one point at Utah. Also, five of the six losses by BYU this season came against teams that had a combined record of 47-15. UTEP finished the season losing five out of their last six games and I don't know how much of a fight they will put up against BYU. The Cougars offense has really started to be more explosive in the second half of the season and the Miners sport the 86th ranked defense in the nation. Lay the points.

Memphis Grizzlies at San Antonio Spurs
Prediction: San Antonio Spurs

Memphis is 12-15 straight up this year. The Grizzlies are 5-11 ATS their last 16 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. The Grizzlies are 4-11 ATS vs. NBA Southwest teams. Memphis is 2-5 ATS after allowing 100 or more points in their last game. San Antonio is 22-3 straight up this year. The Spurs are 7-1 ATS their last 8 games as home favorites of 5.0 to 10.5 points. San Antonio is 6-2 ATS on Saturday and they are 9-3 ATS their last 12 games off an ATS win. The Spurs are 4-0 ATS after scoring 100 or more points in their last game.

UTEP vs. BYU
Play: UTEP +11.5

Reporting Live from NM. As I attended some media functions this week for the NM Bowl,I can guarantee this will be a unique crowd for what officials are calling an almost sold out game. On one side is BYU and the White Mormons, who are here in force, but not spending any money . The UTEP fan base is also down here and are mostly made up of Mexicans from Mexico. The Mexicans are drinking ,but not spending much money on booze as their mostly BYOB. You won't have to look for Team gear to figure which team a fan is rooting for in the New Mexico Bowl. Handicapping the game, BYU is 6-6 s/u, but looking at their last 6 games where BYU won 5 s/u, BYU beat Wyoming,UNLV,Colorado st,NM, and lost to Utah. Not exactly Murderer's row. Rumor has that this could be UTEP's Coach Mike price's last game and have to figure with time off Mike Price's offense should have some new plays. I can't justify giving double digits with a mediocre BYU even if there playing a mediocre team. The wiseguys/sharps jumped on this game early and took UTEP +12.5. I feel the wiseguys were right

Cal Santa Barbara vs. San Diego State
Play: San Diego State -13.5

The Aztecs are a perfect 11-0 to start the season. Tonight they take on a Cal Santa Barbara teams that comes in off aback to back road dogs wins. The last of which was an impressive win at UNLV as they held the Rebels to just 29% shooting from the field. Those pair of wins set them up in a negative system here tonight. Even with their 2 road dogs wins they are still 0-10 straight up and 2-8 ats as a road dog from 12.5 to 15.5. The Aztecs were good enough to win their last game, despite their worst shooting performance of the season where they shot just 34% from the field. They have covered 9 of 11 vs non conference teams and are 25-11 ats after allowing 60 or less points. Look for San Diego State to get the win and cover here tonight.

Larry Ness

Kansas State @ Florida
PICK: Kansas State -1

Florida may have returned five starters from its NCAA Tournament team from a year ago, but it is the one player Kansas State has returned that will make the difference in this contest. The Wildcats' Jacob Pullen (16.3-3.7-4.0) will be the best player on the court when these two teams meet on a neutral site in Sunrise, Florida on Saturday. He led the Wildcats to the Elite Eight last season and he has his team cruising right along again this season with a 9-1 record. Kansas State's lone loss is to Duke and the team has rung up nice wins against Gonzaga, Washington State and Virginia Tech. Coach Frank Martin is establishing a strong program in Manhattan with his tough-nosed thumbprint firmly stamped on his club with its style of play. The Wildcats play tough defense and hit the boards hard. This season, Kansas State is holding its opponents to just 38.6 percent shooting and the Wildcats are rebounding 41.6% of their missed shots on the offensive end of the court which ranks 9th in the nation. During this month of exams, the Wildcats' most recent game was last Saturday where they defeated Loyola-Chicago by a 68-60 margin. Florida has not played in NINE days, since the Gators' 65-62 win over Kent State. The Gators may be a bit rusty with such a long layoff between games. At 7-2 for the season, the Gators' two losses were to Central Florida and Ohio State. Their most impressive win was against in-state rival Florida State. This club returns all five starters from last season's NCAA Tournament team that lost in double-overtime in the first round to BYU. However, the concern remains as to whether this collection of talent can attain bigger and better things. So far this season, the Gators are shooting only 31.8% from behind the three-point line (230th in the nation). Florida has only covered ONCE in its last eight games against teams with a winning record. Now, as a small underdog against a well-tested Kansas State club, the Gators look to be in over their head. Ultimately, Pullen will do what it takes to pull out the victory.

Scott Spreitzer

South Carolina @ Ohio State
PICK: South Carolina +18

Ohio State definitely can put up the points with five players scoring in double figures including Jon Diebler, who made nine 3-pointers his last time out, freshman Jared Sullinger who already has a 40-point game and William Buford who recently scored his 1000th career point. However, South Carolina might be the toughest team the Buckeyes will have played this season which includes two road wins at Florida and Florida State. Gamecocks coach Darrin Horn lost four key players off last season's squad, but led by freshman point guard Bruce Ellington (13.4 ppg and 44% from 3-point line), South Carolina has won six in a row with its only loss being at Michigan State. Also, the Carolina defense is holding opponents to only 38 percent field goal shooting and 65 points. All of which makes it difficult for Ohio State to cover this huge line. In addition, the Buckeyes are 0-4 ATS their last four home games. Grab the big points with South Carolina on Saturday.
