SPORTS WAGERS

NY Rangers +1.37 over PHILADELPHIA

The Flyers are coming off a rare good performance and it might’ve been the best they could play but they still lost and they’re still reeling. The Flyers enter this one 2-5-1 under their new coach and are 3-11-1 in their last 15. Furthermore, Philly is struggling miserably to score goals and in fact, they’ve scored just eight even strength goals in its last 10 games and it really can’t get more inefficient than that. The Rangers are no offensive juggernaut either and they’re also in a bit of a funk. However, they have a big edge in net and they’re taking back a tag and those two things alone make them very worthy of a wager. Note the 1:00 PM start time. Play: NY Rangers +1.37 (Risking 2 units).

Detroit +1.25 over DALLAS

Henrik Zetterberg is out and that definitely makes the Red Wings less attractive but what happens when the leader goes down is that the rest of the team digs down deep and wants to win even more. The Red Wings are heating up big time and they’re playing tremendous defense at the moment. Detroit has now allowed two goals or less in six straight games and goaltender Jimmy Howard is emerging as the team’s #1 goaltender. Howard has been nothing short of brilliant over the past month. Meanwhile, Marty Turco looks shaky, Alex Auld looks shakier and the Stars keep getting beat. Dallas has one win in its last six games and that includes a loss to the Hurricanes. The next night after losing to Carolina they played a completely exhausted Thrashers squad and allowed five goals in regulation and lost again in OT. The Stars also return home from a five-game trip here to play an afternoon game, thus creating an unfavorable situation for the home side. Play: Detroit +1.25 (Risking 2 units).

Phoenix +1.13 over ANAHEIM

When you wager on the Coyotes you’re going to get a very fair shake for your buck. This team works as hard as any team in the league and they work it for every shift of every game. The Coyotes are also hot with two straight wins and eight wins in its last 10 games. They play a tight defensive style and they still seem to have that “us against the world” attitude. Man, this team is so tough to beat. The Ducks on the other hand show up once every two games. You never really know what you’re going to get from them. They play great one game and absolutely careless the next and that’s one reason why they cannot be trusted as the chalk. They have two #1 goaltenders and back-up goalies. It’s Hiller one day and Giguere the next and that goes hand in hand with the Ducks erratic play. Both goalies can’t get into any rhythm whatsoever. The Coyotes are almost always a play plus a price and this one is no exception. Play: Phoenix +1.13 (Risking 2 units).

Terron Chapman

North Carolina vs. Texas
Play: North Carolina +6.5

Saturday's non-conference showdown at "Jerry's World" in Arlington, Texas is sure to have the feel of an NCAA tournament game. The undefeated Texas Longhorns (9-0) and North Carolina Tar Heels (8-2) will meet in front of an expected crowd of around 46,000.

The Tar Heels have played an early season schedule that has prepared them for such a contest with games against Kentucky, Michigan St., Ohio St. and Syracuse. Coach Williams team has struggled at times this season, but expect a better effort from them this afternoon. They match up well with Texas on the interior and the young backcourt of the Heels continues to get better each time out.

The Longhorns have yet to play the type of early season competition that has prepared the Heels for this match-up. The jury is still out on how good this Longhorns team is and can be and I look for the experience of the Heels to be the difference in what should be a closely contested game. Take the points. Play on the North Carolina Tar Heels for 1 unit

Jim Kruger

Central Florida vs Rutgers

Rutgers non-conference schedule was ludicrous having two FCS schools on it. They did play Army as DeVry Technical Institute's schedule was full. It wasn't their fault, but the Scarlet Knights only played one road game against a bowl team beating UConn on an 80-yard pass with 20 seconds to go in the game.

Both schools are good defensively. UCF's strong suit is stopping the run, fourth in the nation, and in getting to the quarterback, #5 in sacks with two exceptional pass rushing defensive ends. Putting pressure on Rutgers QB Tom Savage is mandatory as the Golden Knight's secondary is below average.
What will help Central Florida's cause is if Rutgers WR Tim Brown is out or not at full speed. He is Rutger's playmaker and will be missed. No other WR for Rutgers had more than 2 touchdown receptions, Brown had 8. Freshman QB Savage was very inconsistent this year completing only 52.3% of his passes.

Rutgers isn't overly excited about being on the "other coast" of Florida playing against a low-level Conference USA team. UCF is very happy to be here, especially considering the game is only a little more than 150 miles to their campus and the school has sold 14,000-plus tickets.

When the Big East added teams a few years ago, they chose USF over UCF. While there should be motivation to play in a bowl game against the conference who rejected you, UCF does have a pitiful 0-15 SU record versus the Big East. But, this is a game in the national spotlight, a bowl game, just the third in UCF's history.

While playing UNDER the posted total is inviting with two weak offenses playing, Rutgers at #99 and UCF at #84, I like the more motivated team playing in their home state.

Take Central Florida

LEE KOSTROSKI

Eastern Kentucky @ Ohio
PICK: Eastern Kentucky +9

EKU is a very solid team that is “under the radar”. They don’t get any publicity because of the size of their school and they don’t play in a major conference. However, they are 7-3 with their losses coming at the hands of Maryland, Pitt & a very solid Murray State team. None were blowouts with Maryland and Pitt winning by 11 and Murray State topping the Colonels by just 2.

EKU is a veteran team with 6 of their top 7 in minutes played this year being upperclassmen. They are simply an excellent shooting team with an eFG% of 59.8% which is 4th in the entire nation. eFG% factors in three point shots made along with two point shots in an intricate formula that tells you how good the team really is at shooting the ball. The Colonels have a number of weapons that can really hurt the opposition from behind the arc. As a team they shoot 45% from deep which is 2nd in the country. Amazingly, they have a whopping 6 players that shoot better than 44% from 3-point land which makes them nearly impossible to defend. Their points per possession ratio is a solid +0.092 which is nearly the exact same ration as their opponent (Ohio), yet they are getting 10 points. Their one downfall is on the boards. They are not a great rebounding team, however they don’t really need to be when the shoot the ball so well.

Ohio is a good team this year but we’re not so sure they are ready to be laying double digits vs. a solid team like this. The Bobcats are also in a tough situation here as they played a big home game on Wednesday night topping Illinois State in a “show me how good you are game”. Ohio had a chance to show people their progress facing a solid Missouri Valley team. The Bobcats played very well in the win. Next up for OU is Pitt. This is a classic sandwich spot vs. a “no name” team that is really quite solid. Laying double digits is very dangerous here.

EKU topped this same Ohio team last year by a convincing final of 73-51. The Colonels are 11-2 ATS their last 13 non-conference games and the run continues here. This team has the weapons to pull off the upset and we’ll call for this to be close throughout. Take the points.

ORL -8 vs POR

This may not be a popular choice, given the enormous spread, but this line is huge for a reason, and we can use public perception to our greatest advantage for this contest. Both of these teams were featured on TNT on Thursday, and while the Magic got walloped by the Heat, the Blazers pulled out a magical comeback to beat the Suns in Portland. And now, these two teams meet in Florida, and the line is at, or above 8? It must seem nuts! Well, it's not. The Magic were embarrassed in that game in Miami, and they will not take well to the spanking they took. I expect a concerted and sustained effort from the Magic in this one; there's just no chance that Stan Van Gundy lets his team live down that loss to Wade's Heat without punching back. The Blazers are embarking on a difficult 4-games-in-5-nights road trip through Orlando, Miami, Dallas and San Antonio, and you know the task looks daunting. I expect the Blazers to get out to a slow start in this one, and I think the Magic keep the throttle up and open up a commanding lead. Orlando is 9-2 at home, where they win by an average of 10 points, so it's not at all crazy to think they cover this spread. Portland is sub-.500 on the road, and we'll use the fact that almost 90% of all tickets coming in early are on the Blazers to our advantage. Play against the perception that 9 points is too many to give the dog, take the Magic.

NOS -7 vs DAL

Lots of Hype early in the week saying the Colts and Saints will not come out of this weekend undefeated. Well Thursday I pounded the Colts for a winner and the KEY in this game, which is not really as good of game on paper as they are making it out to be, is clearly the Saints to win or lose. I could give out tons of stats and ATS trends here, but why? The far better team is favord by a TD at home, after already pounding 2 NFC East foes into submission already this year, and both those teams have beaten Dallas.

The Dallas secondary gives up HUGE plays all the time, and they are playing a team who makes HUGE plays all the time. The Saints are balanced, playing on a strong homefield, and have more consistency on offense and find more ways to win, while Dallas finds ways to lose. Granted this is a big number with the season on the line for Dallas, but I do not think Wade Phillips and staff can out-coach Sean Peyton and his, bottom line. Dallas a talented team, but not well coached.

Seton Hall -4.5 over Temple

You have to like what Seton Hall has been able to do on offense racking up their 8-0 record this season. Against teams giving up 73 ppg, they are scoring 90.7 while only allowing 69 against teams scoring 70.2.

Now, they haven't played nearly as tough of a schedule as Temple has, but the Owls are only scoring 62.9 ppg against teams who average 66. They do play great defense, alowing just 54.1 ppg but I can't see that continuing against a Pirates team that has so much confidence on that end of the floor right now.

Great system supporting our play here that says to take favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points from a major division 1-A conference against a team from a second tier conference, off a home blowout win by 20 points or more. 47-18 (72.3%) over the last 5 seasons.

1 Unit on Wizards/Suns UNDER 218

The Suns are 8-2 UNDER in their last 10 games overall, and 12-4 UNDER in their last 16 games. Time and time again the books set Suns' totals much higher than they should be, placing all value with the UNDER. Saturday is no exception. Phoenix is 9-1 UNDER after a game where they failed to cover the spread this season. Washington is 19-7 UNDER in road games first half of the season over the last 2 seasons. After getting in a track meet with the Warriors last night, look for the Wizards to come out flat tonight to help keep this one UNDER the number. Cash in with the UNDER 218 points.
