Matt Fargo

UNLV at San Diego State
Play: UNLV -1.5

At first glance, San Diego St. may look tempting as a home underdog but I don't think this Aztecs team is in a good spot here. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for San Diego St. but it is off to a 14-2 start including wins in seven straight games. The problem is that the last six games have come against a lineup of cupcakes so the Aztecs have not been challenged since defeating California at home by a point way back on December 4th. This is a very good team but not the best team today. UNLV has some payback to take care of even though it is playing it off that it is not being used as motivation. The Rebels lost all three meetings last season against San Diego St. and going back further they have lost five straight and eight of the last nine. Trust me, this team wants some payback. UNLV has also won seven straight games and its recent slate has proven to be a lot tougher as it has taken out Illinois by 16 points and California by 17 points. Only one win of the last seven has been by single digits. There is a very interesting dynamic in this game that favors the Rebels and that is assistant coach Justin Hutson, who was hired this season, was a former Aztecs assistant coach for five year so if anyone is going to know the San Diego St. team, it is him. The Rebels have had a lot of time to prepare for this game as they have not played since January 5th and while that could hurt momentum, word out of Vegas is that head coach Dave Rice kept practices very intense to avoid any sort of letdown. "The way I've characterized it with the team is that one win or loss to start conference doesn't make or break our conference season," Rice said. "Having said that … we will absolutely be ready to play." This is a marquee game to open conference action so both teams will no doubt be ready. The Rebels are 12-2 ATS in their last 14 games as a road favorite of three points or fewer and 31-9 ATS in their last 40 road games when the line is between +3 and -3.

Saints vs. 49ers
Play: Under 47

The New Orleans Saints are playing offensively at a level beyond even what the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers have done this season. Drew Brees has been surreal and the Saints are in uncharted waters having scored 42 or more points in each of their last four games. In those four games Brees has thrown for 17 TD passes to just three INT's. After last week's easy OVER in the New Orleans/Detroit game sailing over the 59 point total, this looks like an easy OVER too, right? Not so fast. The Saints have had an easy schedule this season in terms of the defenses they have faced. Since week five they have not faced a single defense that ranks better than 19th with the exception of the Atlanta Falcons. The problem with that is Atlanta ranks 20th against the pass, allowing Brees to operate. The big offensive numbers in the current New Orleans 9-0 SU + ATS run have come against eight teams that rank 20th or worse out of 32 teams. The only team that ranked respectfully was Tennessee and, guess what? The Saints scored 22 in that one. In stark contrast, San Francisco ranks fourth in the league in defensive yards allowed. It is worth noting that they rank in the middle of the league (16th) against the pass. But does that mean Brees will feast? The Niners played to a 13-3 record and often had leads. Opposing teams often had to throw to try to win. As a result, the Niners allowed 104 of their 229 points in the fourth quarter! There was a lot of passing yards there but despite that, San Francisco allowed only 14.3 ppg. So I believe the Niners will have enough defensive success vs. Brees and the Saints to keep this score from getting out of hand. It's also very important to look at the location of this game. The Saints scored 41.6 ppg at home but just 27.3 ppg on the road - a full two-TD difference. And as far as the Niners go, they averaged 38 total points per game and gave up just 10.9 per game at home on the year. This total looks enticingly low because of the Saints offensive prowess in recent games, but now you know the rest of the story. Play UNDER.

Sean “Paddy” Murphy

Michigan @ Iowa
Pick: Michigan 2.5
Offered at: -2.5 Pinnacle

Michigan has handled Iowa in six consecutive meetings, and I don't believe that winning streak will be in jeopardy on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolverines have suffered only three losses in 17 games this season. All three losses have come against teams that either have explosive offenses (Duke and Indiana), or shut down defenses (Virginia). As far as I'm concerned, Iowa possesses neither of those traits.

Michigan should certainly have its guard up after a close call against Northwestern earlier this week. The Wolverines won that game by two points in overtime. Let's not knock them too much for that ugly effort, as they were in a clear letdown spot following a blowout win over Wisconsin.

The Hawkeyes turned some heads with back-to-back road wins over Wisconsin and Minnesota, but have since gone in the tank, losing games by 29 against Ohio State and 34 against Michigan State.

Iowa hasn't been particularly impressive at either end of the floor this season, shooting 44.6% as a team while allowing the opposition to shoot 45.8%. The Hawkeyes home court advantage has been minimal at best, as they've already dropped a pair of Big Ten games on this court, and four contests overall this season.

Michigan is a veteran team with some pretty lofty goals as we approach crunch time in conference play. Meanwhile, Iowa is just hoping to improve on what was a disastrous 2010-11 campaign. Talent wins out in this case.

Marc Lawrence

North Carolina @ Florida State
PICK: Florida State +7

As the saying goes, nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina, an adage that UNC's Tar Heels proved correct by winning all nine games in their recent homestand. Now comes the hard part: taking to the road for the first time since December 3rd. Both of the Tar Heels' losses to date this season have come away from home and here they must face a physical FSU squad looking to even the score for a pair of losses to UNC last year. Tenacious defense is a staple of Leonard Hamilton's teams, resulting in a sparkling 40-22-1 ATS home dog log in conference games, including 29-6-1 ATS the last 36. Not only do the Heels arrive in a tricky letdown/look-ahead situation - they're 0-3 SU and ATS after playing Miami Florida and 1-5-1 ATS in games before tangling with Va Tech - they'll be overmatched in the paint against the Sems and will have to rely on success from the perimeter to prevail. Considering UNC missed 14 of its 16 three-point shots in Tuesday's win over the Hurricanes, such success may prove to be elusive. The bottom line is we're simply not interested in laying points with a Carolina squad that is just 45-85-5 as ACC chalk in games in which it fails to score 80 points (Hamilton's teams have allowed only 23 of 311 foes to top 80 points at home in his career). Toss in the facts that the host in Seminoles' games are 8-3 ATS this season and that FSU has cashed in six of the last seven meetings with UNC, and there's really only one way to look here. Florida State bullies its way to a huge ACC win today. We recommend a 1-unit play on Florida State.

LSU vs Arkansas
Pick: Arkansas

The LSU Tigers are 5-11-1 ATS in their last 17 vs. the SEC and they head to an angry Arkansas team. Arkansas just had its 7-game win streak end with a close lose at Mississippi. Now they come back home and home court has meant everything in this series, which is often the case in college basketball: The home team is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings and the LSU Tigers are 2-8-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings. In addition, the Tigers are 0-5 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Arkansas. Play Arkansas!

SPORTS WAGERS

SAN FRANCISCO +4 over New Orleans

We realize how easy it is to like the Saints here. Why wouldn’t you? They are an offensive machine, they're hot and they’ve been down this road in recent times. At the all important quarterback position, New Orleans’ Drew Brees lays over San Francisco’s Alex Smith. However, life in the NFL is rarely that simple. There are issues on the Saints side that cannot be conveniently overlooked, namely on defence. The Saints struggled against the run early in the season, surrendering more than 100 yards eight times through 10 games. That was prior to New Orleans going into their high-octane scoring when teams hardly could run the ball in an attempt to play catch up. The Niners will not abandon their ground game. It’s their bread and butter and it has proven effective. Quietly, San Francisco finished 11th in scoring, ahead of teams like the Ravens and Cowboys. If need be, the 49ers can do some damage through the air. Smith was proficient with a league-low five interceptions and having seen Calvin Johnson’s 211 yards receiving last week, the 49ers could have success throwing to WR Michael Crabtree. The 49ers have a huge edge defensively, having surrendered just 229 points on the season compared to the Saints’ 339. This marks only the second time since 1982 that the road team has been favored in the Divisional round of the NFL playoffs. That’s because the home team has usually earned the right to host and therefore should not be in the underdog’s role. While the Saints might be the sexy pick, the Niners are the prudent play and that’s the side we’ll endorse. Play San Francisco +4 (Risking 2.1 units to win 2).

NEW ENGLAND -13½ over Denver

Those Broncos. What a cheeky group they are. Win six. Drop three. Back their way into the playoffs. Upset the Steelers. So now what? Travel to Foxboro and knock of the top seeded Patriots? News flash; it ain’t happenin’. While the Tim Tebow hysteria has been fun for most, it’s a joke to others. Granted, the youngster had an impressive game last week but don’t expect that lightning in a bottle to strike again here. The Patriots are not the imposters that the Steelers turned out to be. They have an elite quarterback and an elite coach. They’ve had the luxury of experiencing the Tebow phenomenon first hand, resulting in a 41-23 victory that took place in Denver. A quick review of that one had New England arriving in Denver to face a streaking Broncos bunch, the latter riding a six-game winning streak. The Pats fell behind 16-7 until Belichick and Co. saw what they were dealing with and then outscored Denver 34-7 the rest of the way. Not much will change from then to now. Not only did that one set off a three-game losing streak for the Broncos, it quickly dispelled Denver’s defensive status. While some are quick to point out New England’s defensive deficiencies, the Broncos allowed 390 points this season compared to the Patriots’ 342. Offensively, the Broncos scored just 309 points on the year while the Pats racked up 513. With two weeks to prepare and the motivation from having lost this match over the past two seasons, the Patriots roll it up against this inferior guest. Play: New England -13½ (Risking 2.08 units to win 2).

EZWINNERS

New England Patriots -13.5

The Broncos shocked everyone last week including myself with a huge win over a beat up Pittsburgh Steelers team, but Tebow time will end this week. The New England Patriots have a very poor defense but they can more than make up for their defensive deficiencies with an offensive attack led by quarterback Tom Brady, tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receiver Wes Welker. This core unit for New England can seemingly score at will and I expect them to do so in this game. Denver's defense has played pretty well this season, but in Week 15 Tom Brady passed for 320 yards, while Denver's Tim Tebow failed to even reach 100 passing yards in route to a 41-23 Patriots route. The New England defense has improved some near the end of the season and they had multiple takeaways in that game against Denver. The Broncos would need to play a flawless game to keep this one close which is something I don't see them doing. New England has way too many weapons for Denver to contain and the Broncos have no answer for the Patriots tight ends. I think this one gets ugly. Lay the points.

Charlie Scott

UNLV vs. San Diego State
Play: UNLV -2

SDST has exceeded expectations in Non-conference play as this was expected to be a rebuilding yr. SDST lost Kawhi Leonard & Malcolm Thomas to the NBA and Billy White and PG Gay to Europe off last Years team. While UNLV returns everyone, but Tre'von Willis, but replaces Willis with UCLA transfer Moser who's better. UNLV's JR/SR team has revenge since they have lost 5 straight to SDST in this big MountainWest rivalry. SDST is a pretty young team, with only 1 real weapon Guard Chase Tapley, However UNLV has good defensive guards in Oscar Bellfield and Justin Hawkins. The matchup also favors UNLV as SDST likes to play small with a 4 Guard lineup, while UNLV can run the floor and go big with talent. Play UNLV at this cheap price !

Drexel vs. NC Wilmington
Play: Drexel -3

Drexel should control this one here tonight as they are the better team with the better numbers. Drexel has won and covered 4 of 5 times as a road favorite of 3 or less and has won 6 of 7 vs losing teams this season. In games after allowing 60 or less they are 7-2 and 5-0 off a conference game. UNC Wilmington is a lousy 2-13 vs wining teams in the 2nd half the last 3 seasons and 6-16 ats vs teams who allow 65 or less points per game. When they are make a home dog of 3 or less they are an anemic 0-4 straight up and ats the last 3 seasons. With Drexel having won 9 of their last 10 and UNC Wilmington struggling vs winning teams we will lay the small number here. Take Drexel.

Boston @ Indiana
Pick: Boston +3.5

The Celtics can't just keep losing, can they? Last night's 88-79 home loss to Chicago was the team's third in a row, a streak which started w/ a 87-74 home defeat to tonight's opponent Indiana. Tonight brings a shot at revenge. Both teams played last night, so no advantage there. The Pacers won in Toronto Friday night 95-90, but laying points to a team like Boston is real "foreign waters." The Celtics are a perfect 2 for 2 ATS as a road dog so far this year, cashing in the opener at New York and then also staying within the number at Miami. Indiana has been beating up on a lot of bad teams thus far. They've played Detroit twice, Toronto twice, Cleveland, Charlotte and New Jersey. Those opponents account for seven of the Pacers' nine wins. Indiana was blown out by both Miami and Philadelphia in step up games. Boston gets their revenge Saturday night.

1 Unit Iowa +3

Off back-to-back blowout losses to arguably the two best teams (Ohio St., Michigan St.) in the Big Ten, expect Iowa to bounce back strong against a Michigan team it has had success against at home. Iowa lost by 3 in overtime in last season's home meeting with the Wolverines. The year before that it lost by 2 points in OT. The year before that it won by 10 in OT. The Wolverines are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games as a road favorite. The Hawkeyes are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as a home underdog. The home team is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings. We'll take the points in a game that will likely come right down to the wire again.

1 Unit Oklahoma State +14

This is a sandwich game for Baylor, which is coming off a thrilling 2-point win over K-State and will be looking ahead to a date with Kansas Monday. In other words, the 9-7 Cowboys likely won't get the Bears' full attention. Baylor is 16-0 and ranked No. 4 in the country. With that comes public attention and odds makers looking to cash in on that attention. I feel the books have overvalued Baylor here in hopes of catching Joe Public in their trap. After 4 straight losses against the spread, Baylor covered against K-State. This is significant because the Bears are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games following an ATS win. The Bears are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games as a favorite and 4-11 ATS in their last 15 home games. They are also 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games as a home favorite and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games as a home favorite of 13.0 points or more. The Cowboys are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Cowboys have won 22 of the last 29 in this series and only one of those losses has come by more than 13 points. We'll take the points.

1 Unit Florida State +6.5

FSU is 8-1 at home where it played UNC to a 2-point game last season. It covered the spread in that game to improve to 6-1 ATS in its last 7 against the Tar Heels. The Seminoles are an incredible 21-4-1 ATS in their last 26 games as a home underdog of 6.5 points or less, including 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as an underdog of 6.5 or fewer points. Look for the Seminoles to give the Tar Heels a scare this afternoon.
