Bobby Maxwell

San Diego State +6 at UNLV

I've gone 15-8 with my last 23 FREE selections and tonight I've got another winner for you as I'm going to the college gridiron with a comp winner on San Diego State as the Aztecs head to Vegas to take on UNLV.

These two teams have followed similar paths this season but today marks the end of a terrible era at UNLV as it’s coach Mike Sanford’s last game as he’s being let go after today’s contest. And if this season is like every other one, his players have already quit on him and won’t be giving much effort today. I’m grabbing the points and going with San Diego State tonight.

Both schools have wins or Colorado State and New Mexico in conference action and neither school was able to challenge the elite Mountain West teams in any contest this season. These are not quite the bottom feeders, but pretty close.

San Diego State has won three straight in this rivalry and six of the last seven (SU and ATS). The Aztecs scored a 42-21 win last year as 10 ½-point favorites, and last time they were in Vegas they got a 38-30 road win as three-point ‘dogs. The straight-up winner has covered the line in each of the last eight games.

UNLV is on a plethora of negative ATS trends, including 2-7 overall, 4-12 as a home favorite, 8-20 as a favorite, 1-4 after a bye week and 11-26 against teams with a losing record.

SDSU has a lot to play for, including pride and spots on the roster for next year since coach Brady Hoke will be evaluating talent. On the other side, the Rebels have no motivation for this one. I’ve been all over Sanford during his tenure at UNLV because he just isn’t head coaching material. He’s better suited for coordinator and that’s what he’ll go back to somewhere next season.

Grab the points and play the Aztecs, but don’t be surprised when they win this thing outright.

UCLA +13 at USC

Feeling good about the points in the battle for the Victory Bell, as Rick Neuheisel's team does bring a 3 game winning streak into this one, and covers in 3 of their last 4.

UCLA has also been money the last 3 in this series, and 4 of the last 5 overall against the Men of Troy - all as the underdog.

The Trojans have been a money-burner this season at 1-8 their last 9 when favored, and So Cal has dropped their last 3 lined home games.

Southern Cal has been idle since getting romped by Stanford, bit even with the extra time off, the G-Man doubts this Trojans edition is capable of delivering a resounding win against their cross-town rival.

Look for the Bruins to hang in there, and cover another against the Trojans.

G-Man all over the generous points.

Colorado does just enough yesterday to stay close to Nebraska and give us a solid Comp Play winner.

I’m handing you another Comp Play winner as I’m taking Stanford at home tonight against visiting Notre Dame.

The Irish, stuck in the midst of one of their worst seasons ever, have covered in just 3 of their last 11 games overall this season. Coming into this game Notre Dame has gone just 1-4 ATS its last 5 games.

Stanford, on the other hand, with flavor of the month coach Jim Harbaugh leading the way, has covered in 3 of its last 4 games and is 6-3 ATS its last 9 games overall.

At home this year the Cardinal have gone 5-1 ATS, beating their opponents by an average of about 13 points per game (35.3-22.8). The Irish, on the other hand, are just 2-5 ATS on the road this year.

Things will be ugly again tonight as Stanford rolls to an easy home win.

Nice comp winner with Colorado covering vs Nebraska last night! For today's comp selection we're focusing on the New Mexico-Texas Christian match up.

There is only one perfect team against the spread this year and that is TCU. You gonna buck the trend? Not me either. They still have to play in impress mode and I just really like this team. The Lobos are absolutely horrible and if they wanted to, TCU could absolutely name the score here and they will!!

Jimmy the Moose

Carolina Hurricanes at Buffalo Sabres

The Hurricanes are in last place in the NHL. Carolina played last night at home vs. the Thrashers and it ended in another loss. The Hurricanes were up 4-1 going into the third per and ended up losing 5-4. The Hurricanes are only averaging 2.2 GPG but their D has been horrible allowing 3.56 GPG. Carolina has played over the total in 4 of their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning record. Not having their number 1 goalie Cam Ward between the pipes has hurt this club.

The Sabres are a fast team and they have the talent for offensive explosions. Buffalo visited Philadelphia yesterday afternoon and beat the Flyers 4-2. The Sabres are averaging 2.67 GPG at home and will score more than a few vs. the Hurricanes who are allowing 3.67 GPG on the road. The over is 6-2 in the Sabres last 8 games as a favorite of -201 or greater. In their last 17 games playing the tail end of a back-to-back games the over is 11-5-1.

Carolina has suffered through several key injuries early on and that's cost them dearly. On Saturday there's a good chance they'll be facing the Sabres back-up goalie. Both team's will find the back of the net often in this high-scoring game.

Play the Hurricanes/Sabres Over

O.C. Dooley

Pick: Navy -10

Normally this non-conference affair would not be that important to a team like Navy who already has their postseason Bowl game publicly announced and accepted. But the fact of the matter is that current Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo is a native of Hawaii and at one time was an outstanding quarterback for the Rainbow Warriors. Thus we have a "homecoming" for a visiting head coach which is a very unusual setup. For the first time in Navy history the Middies are going to a postseason Bowl game in SEVEN consecutive seasons. Quarterback Ricky Dobbs has an 8-2 career record as a starter for Navy and is currently ranked #1 in the entire country in average points (13.2) generated per game. Dobbs in his career has rushed for 22 touchdowns and is a threat both in the air and on the ground. According to my database research this is a very high percentage wager as Navy is 10-1 ATS long term when facing a "marginal" winning opponent who has a win percentage between 40-and-49. Navy is also 9-1 ATS the past three years after failing to cover the spread twice in a 3-game span. Last week Hawaii barely kept their postseason Bowl eligibility hopes alive with an OVERTIME victory versus a loudy opponent who has a 1-9 overall record

SPORTS WAGERS

GOLDEN STATE +8½ +1.00 over L.A. Lakers

You’re always going to pay a premium to wager on the Lakers and that’s something one should avoid getting in the habit of. The Lakers are the most played betting favorite in the league and the oddsmakers have those figures, thus, they always inflate the line to offset or to “balance the books”. The Lakers have played just three road games this season in 14 games. They’re 2-1 on the road but its two its were by one point over Houston and three points over Ok City, both in OT. In the Lakers other road game they were buried in Denver to the tune of 105-79. The Lakers are a great team, however, they’re also 11-3 and they really don’t have anything to prove yet. In other words, they’re coasting and home teams playing the Lakers will fill the joint and they’ll be extremely fired up. Yeah, the Warriors are still undermanned but they’re still dangerous, as recent wins in Portland and Dallas will attest to. Upset possibility. Play: Golden State +8½ +1.00 (Risking 2 units).

BUFFALO –1½ +1.17 over Carolina

This is a very tough part of the schedule in late November, that is, before and after the Thanksgiving holiday, as teams are playing a lot of games and players like to enjoy some time with friends and family as well. A quick look at last year’s results sees the home teams going an impressive 9-3 the Saturday after Thanksgiving and just like this year, there were a slew of teams that played Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The Canes will be playing its third game in four days and the tail end of back-to-backs after allowing the Thrashers five unanswered goals in the third period last night and falling 6-4. Not only are they physically exhausted but they surely have to be feeling mentally fatigued as well. The Sabres will also be playing its third game in four days, however, they’re coming off a win and they played yesterday afternoon and not yesterday evening. The Canes are getting accustomed to losing and it’s hard to imagine this one turning out any different. Play: Buffalo –1½ +1.17 (Risking 2 units).

ATLANTA +1.04 over Philadelphia

Both these teams will be playing its third game in four days and the tail end of back-to-backs but the difference is the Thrashers are the home team and in a similar situation last year, the Flyers went into Toronto and lost 4-2. One would also have to assume that the Flyers are the more tired team. This game will mark the seventh straight game the Flyers have had to travel after a five game road trip, home for one game yesterday and back on the road for this one. That road trip also took them to the West Coast for three and to Colorado. The Flyers have dropped four of its last five and have allowed 19 goals over that stretch. The Thrashers confidence tank is full and its getting fuller. They’re coming off a 2-0 win at the Joe and a 6-4 come from behind win last night. The Thrashers have won six of its last nine and over that stretch they have just one regulation loss, that being a 3-2 defeat against the Penguins. Wrong side favored. Play: Atlanta +1.04 (Risking 2 units).

PITTSBURGH -½ -1.03 over NY Rangers

Once again we find two teams playing its third game in four days and the tail end of back-to-backs. The Rangers are coming off a rather humiliating 5-1 loss in Tampa last night and that had to hurt, as John Tortarella returned to Tampa and the players had to know he wanted to show them something good. Instead, the Rangers got back to its losing ways and now own the league’s second worst record since opening the year 7-1. Now the Rangers are being asked to travel to Pittsburgh to play its third road game in succession and if they appeared tired last night you can double that tonight. The Pens played an afternoon game on Long Island yesterday and lost 3-2 after being absolutely dominated in the third period. The Penguins pride themselves on third period dominance and they’re going to be even tougher tonight coming off that loss. Rangers played a night game, Pens played a day game and that, too, gives the Pens an even bigger edge. Play: Pittsburgh -½ -1.03 (Risking 2.06 units to win 2).

ST. LOUIS –1.10 over Detroit

It’s not like the Red Wings are playing poorly, despite one win in its last six games. In fact, they’ve dominated teams but this is just getting more frustrating by the moment. Detroit has scored a measly six goals over those six games and has scored one or less in five of them. Incredible. They outshot Calgary yesterday 40-17 and lost 3-0. They outshout Atlanta on Wednesday, 40-25 and lost 2-0. They outshot Florida 40-20 and lost 2-1 in OT. Niklas Lindstrom has one goal on the year. The Red Wings are playing decent and they’re losing and now they find themselves in a difficult spot, playing its third game in four days and not getting scoring nor solid goaltending. Meanwhile, the Blues defeated the red-hot Preds in Nashville last night. They’ve now won two in a row and four of its past five. The Blue Notes were struggling miserably to score goals and in fact, has the lowest goal output in the league but they’ve picked it up recently so it’s much less of a concern. In fact, they scored three times on Nashville last night, three on Dallas the previous night and in recent games, four on the Islanders, three on Phoenix and six on the Canucks. The Red Wings are a frustrated and banged up team while the Blue Notes are healthy and feeling it. Once again, we’ll go with the home team in the third game in four days angle in the midst of the holiday. Play: St. Louis –1.10 (Risking 2.2 units to win 2).

NASHVILLE -½ +1.05 over Florida

The Preds are coming off a rare loss at home last night and thus, I wouldn’t bet on them losing two straight. Prior to that loss, the Preds had reeled off seven victories in a row. Now they’ll face the slumping Panthers playing its third game in four days after back-to-back losses to the Rangers and Leafs. Florida has now lost three straight and will travel to play back-to-backs. The Preds will also play back-to-back and its third game in four days but they’ll remain at home where they have one loss since October 15. Scott Clemmensen will get the start in net and he’s played in just five games this season and has a GAA of 4.12 and a save percentage of just .880. Play: Nashville -½ +1.05 (Risking 2 units).

VANCOUVER –1½ +1.29 over Edmonton

Man, this one is almost not fair. The Canucks have been off since Sunday while every other team in the league has been bashing each other’s brains out including these Oilers. Edmonton is coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Sharkies last night in which they gave up a shorthanded goal with just over a minute left in the third. That had to be demoralizing and now they’ll travel to play its third game in four days and the tail end of back-to-backs. The Oilers are banged up, they’re reeling, they’re physically and mentally gassed while the Canucks are the league’s most rested club and it’s not close. The Canucks are also healthier than they’ve been all year and have now won three of four with only loss over that stretch coming against the red-hot Blackhawks. Not only are they winning but the Canucks are lighting it up with 17 goals in its last three wins. One has to figure that the Canucks can’t wait to get on the ice today while the Oilers can’t wait to get off. Play: Vancouver –1½ +1.29 (Risking 2 units).

LOS ANGELES +1.25 over Chicago

On this same date last year and under similar circumstances, Chicago went into Los Angeles on the Saturday after Thanksgiving playing its third game in four days and the tail end of back-to-backs and proceeded to get whipped 5-2. This year the Kings are better and the Blackhawks are in a more difficult spot. Chicago will not only play its third game in four days but they’ll also play its sixth consecutive on the road after three games to the Canadian West Coast and games in San Jose and Anaheim yesterday. Chicago will wrap up its six-game road trip here, as they sit comfortably in the standings with a 16-6 record with two OT losses. Zero desperation in a difficult spot makes for a rather appealing home pooch. Play: Los Angeles +1.25 (Risking 2 units).

Virginia Tech vs. Virginia
Play: Virginia Tech -15

Going the Hokies here. Va Tech 26-12 ATS on the road since '04. Thats what you get you play D and always have an edge on special teams. Since the end of 2007, the Cavs are just 8-15 SU. These are the teams Va Tech feasts on. Hokies have rushed for 200+ in their last 3 games while VA is 3-13 ATS last 16 when allowing 200 or more. We think HC Al Groh is out at VA and his players will be doing a walk through drill with no heart, even against a bitter in-state rival.

Arkansas vs LSU

Even though the LSU Tigers are ranked and the Arkansas Razorbacks are not, we simply feel that Arkansas is the much hotter team right now and we are calling for the upset at Baton Rouge Saturday night.

The Razorbacks have won four straight games, and they have outscored those four opponents by an average score of 48.5-21.0! While there is talk about Florida quarterback Tim Tebow winning his second straight Heisman Trophy, the fact is that Tebow may not even be the best quarterback in his own conference right now.

That distinction may belong to Arkansas signal-caller Ryan Mallett, who has tossed 28 touchdown passes vs. just six interceptions while throwing for nearly 3200 yards and averaging a whopping 9.74 yards per pass attempt. He could take advantage of an LSU defense that has been exposed a bit the last three games, allowing 400.0 total yards per game including 217.7 yards in the air.

If the Tigers continue to spring leaks defensively vs. Mallett, they will have trouble winning this game as their offense has been truly mediocre this season. LSU is averaging an ordinary 24.8 points per game, and they have been below average both running the ball (3.8 yards per rush) and throwing it (6.9 yards per attempt).

It was their defense that was standing up and winning games earlier in the year, but as that defense has started to fold, the Tigers have lost two of their last three games with the lone win being by only eight points over a seemingly outclassed Louisiana Tech team.

Pick: Arkansas +3.5

MTi Sports

Los Angeles Lakers at Golden State Warriors
Prediction: Golden State Warriors

The Lakers are 0-4 ATS (-15.1 ppg) on the road after a win in which Pau Gasol played fewer than 30 minutes, 0-7 ATS (-5.9 ppg) when Andrew Bynum had more turnovers than assists the last two and 0-6 ATS (-14.2 ppg) on the road after two wins in which Lamar Odom scored fewer than 10 points in each. Also, LA is 0-7 ATS (-5.9 ppg) as a favorite with at least one day of rest after a game in which they controlled at least 60% of the available rebounds and 0-6 ATS (-6.0 ppg) as a road favorite with two or more days of rest after a home win in which they scored less than 15% of their points from the free throw line. The Warriors are 7-0 ATS (13.9 ppg) as a home dog with at least one day of rest after a double digit loss in which they had more turnovers than assists. Grab the points.

Lenny Del Genio

Portland Trail Blazers at Utah Jazz
Prediction: Utah Jazz

Portland apparently had a very fun Thanksgiving Holiday, because they came out last night and got whipped by Memphis 106-96, trailing 42-19 at one point! They have lost 22 of their last 30 in Salt Lake and playing on BB nights certainly won't alleviate those problems. The Jazz have cashed 20 of 26 at home when laying six or less points and are 17-4 ATS here coming off a non-conference game. None of Portland's opponents during its four-game home stand had a winning record and this is their third game in four nights. A tighter rotation might actually help Utah. Just look at what Golden State did to Dallas the other night. Take Utah.
