Big upsets happen all the time because of situational circumstances that set it up to occur and this could be one of them.

First, Scott Feldman should never be close to 2½-1 favorite. He has a 6-9 record in 16 starts, a 4.77 ERA and a 0-3 record with a 5.77 over his last three starts. Pitchers like Justin Verlander and David Price sometimes deserve to be in this price range. With a career record of 39-42 and career ERA of 4.76, Scott Feldman does not.

What has more influence on this price is the current form of these two. Texas is hot with seven wins in eight games, while the Twins are freezing with one win over their past 10. Ron Gardenhire managed teams don’t quit. They’ve had some nice stretches this season after a brutal start. They will give it everything they have to snap out of this. Meanwhile, a little complacency could set in for the Rangers. They’ve scored 39 times over their past four games and have beaten this team seven times in eight tries this year. This is a day game after a night game so Ron Washington is likely going to rest some key starters in anticipation of the Rays coming in here tomorrow. This one just sets up nicely for this big pooch to strike.

The big news in baseball this weekend of course has been the historical trade just pulled off by the Los Angeles Dodgers who are neck-and-neck in the National League Western divisional chase with San Francisco. Not only have the Giants taken a back seat, the team has received recent negative media attention when the major league hits leader Melky Cabrera received a season-ending 50 game drug suspension. Just like Cincinnati who went on a tear when star slugger Joey Votto went down to injury, San Francisco has actually thrived without Cabrera who has been replaced by Gregor Blanco who ironically began his career in Atlanta. For those who take a peak at tonight’s game on ESPN keep an eye out for Giants outfielder Angel Pagan who has hit safely in 8 of the past 9 games. It is actually a bit of a shock that San Francisco has been cast as the favorite this evening since former rotation ace Tim Lincecum has lost consecutive HOME starts where his ERA (5.73) has been extremely high. To make matters worse Lincecum has lost three starts in a row when facing an Atlanta lineup led by Jason Heyward (.394, 5 homers, 11 RBI when playing in San Francisco). On the mound for the visitors this evening is veteran Tim Hudson and the Braves have managed to win 8 of his last 9 starts. But it should be noted that back on Monday of this week that streak came to an end as Atlanta actually LOST with Hudson as the starter. In a strange season-long statistic San Francisco is a profitable 20-10 when off three consecutive games where the offense failed to hit a homerun
