WINNIPEG -½ +140 over Montreal
There is no line at the time of this writing due to the status of Carey Price and Michael Cammalleri, who are both battling the flu bug. Whether they play or not, this game will be a pick ‘em or thereabouts. Whatever it is, we’re playing it. Last year the Habs rode the hot hand of Carey Price for 82 games. On most nights, when they did win, it was because of Price. Rarely did Montreal outplay its opponent. In its opener, Montreal failed to score on a bad Leafs team that allowed five to Ottawa last night. The Canadiens will likely struggle to score all year and being shutout in their first game can only add more pressure. Montreal’s top point getter last year was Tomas Plekanec with 57 points. Mike Cammalleri was next with 47 and the Habs did nothing to address that other than adding an aging and injury prone Erik Cole. The Canadiens are as beatable as any team in the NHL and you can triple that when Price is not in net. This is actually going to be a really cheap price on the Jets. First, the atmosphere will be absolutely electric and nothing close to what any of these players felt or saw in Atlanta. In the Jets first preseason game in Winnipeg the joint was rocking like the seventh game of a playoff series. This is Super Bowl atmosphere plus and the host will be as jacked up as any team ever. Winnipeg is a little short on depth but they do have some top-notch talent in Evander Kane, Bryan Little, Zach Bogosian and Dustin Byfuglien. The Jets have a good mix of vets and young players and plenty of experience behind the blue-line. A couple of rookies could also make an immediate impact but all this really doesn’t mater for today’s (5:00 PM EST) much anticipated return of the beloved Jets to Winnipeg. This one is all about a great hockey town getting their team back that they never deserved to lose. Hockey is back where it should be and you’re going to see the appreciation of these Jets players by playing their guts out for 60 minutes for the city and fans of Winnipeg.
