Chicago also had to travel Thursday while the Fish were off. Cubs pitcher Adbert Alzolay actually looks like a potential part of the future but is 1-7 with a 5.06 ERA on the road.

ANALYSIS: While Angels pitcher Patrick Sandoval has been pretty good, I'm surprised this ML is so low on Houston behind Zack Greinke (10-3, 3.69). He's 5-0 with a 2.67 ERA on the road and has a 2.57 ERA in two starts vs. the Angels. Houston also is expecting back first baseman Yuli Gurriel (.324, 12 HR, 66 RBI) off the injured list. Sandoval allowed four runs in two innings in his lone 2021 outing vs. Houston. The Astros, who destroy lefties, also had the benefit of being off Thursday, while the Angels used closer Raisel Iglesias for 1.1 innings so he may not be available.

ANALYSIS: I want to get this play in because I think it will only rise. The Nats have actually been getting the lead and playing some close games but they have still lost nine of their last 10 and they are the worst team since the All Star break. The Braves have won seven of their last 10 games and they are still battling for the division. Charlie Morton has actually been better away from home and he is coming off six scoreless innings against the Nats. Josiah Gray has been good but the Nats bullpen is miserable. Take the Braves.

ANALYSIS: The A's have won seven straight. They should be even bigger favorites against a Texas team that's lost eight of nine while getting outscored 49-18. The Rangers rank dead last in OPS versus lefties (.641); tonight they face lefty Cole Irvin, who allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings in a 12-3 rout of Texas last Saturday. Coming off an ankle injury, Texas' Dane Dunning is making his first start since Aug. 2. Lay it as Oakland improves to 38-15 in its last 53 versus the Rangers.

ANALYSIS: This is a unique situation with Cleveland being the first team since at least 2004 to be a road favorite after losing by more than 15 runs at home in its last game (Indians lost 17-0 to Oakland on Thursday). The confidence oddsmakers are showing in Cleveland here is warranted. The Indians give the ball to top (healthy) starter in Zach Plesac. The Tribe won in Plesac’s last start Sunday, also against Detroit. The Indians are 7-0 since July 16, 2019, when Plesac starts as a favorite when they won in his last start as well as his last start against this opponent.

Analysis:
There's pretty much no way to make a case for the Cubs right now, and I won't attempt to here. But they happen to be the opponent in a spot where I want to go against the Marlins. That's because Jesus Luzardo is starting for Miami. Luzardo has had an absolutely awful season. He went from being what was supposed to be a mainstay in the Oakland rotation to pitching in Las Vegas for the AAA Aviators. Luzardo was dealt to Miami in the Marte deal at the deadline but the change of scenery hasn't made a difference yet. Luzardo wasn't horrible in his first as a Marlin, but he was terrible last time out. Problem remains mostly very poor command and until he fixes that issue, he's a guy to go against. So as miserable as the Cubs are right now, I'm seeing them with a decent sized mound edge here with Alzolay. Not that he's been anything special, but he gets the checks across the board vs. Luzardo. It's a starting pitcher play all the way on the Cubs to win the F5.

The Angels hit the ball well at home and will be going against the 37 year old Zack Greinke who does give up home run balls. The Astros are awesome at hitting left handed pitching and I believe will get to Patrick Sandoval. The humidity will rise as the game goes on which helps the ball travel a little bit more. I think both teams will do enough to make this a high scoring game. Take the Over.

ANALYSIS: The Rangers come home having lost eight of their last nine games. They've gone 5-20 since the All-Star break. The Rangers are far better at home than on the road, but they haven't been good at home for a bit. Also, the A's are an excellent 33-23 on the road. A's starter Cole Irvin has generally been good all year and has a 2.82 ERA in his last 11 starts, eight of which were A's wins. He's been slightly better on the road than at home, too. Rangers starter Dane Dunning is good, which is why we get good odds, so this might happen late. Be patient. The A's will take it.

ANALYSIS: The Cubs have lost eight in a row and 14 of their last 16. They just lost 17-4 and then had to fly to Miami while licking their wounds. They are a paltry 21-37 on the road and most of that came before their roster was decimated by the trade deadline (and Willson Contreras hitting the injured list). Marlins starter Jesus Luzardo was bad last time out, but that was in Colorado. He'll find the Cubs' bats in Marlins Park to his liking. The Marlins are 27-27 at home, too, which is a big plus considering how bad the opponent is.

ANALYSIS: Zack Wheeler has arguably been the best pitcher in baseball this year, leading the majors in WAR. Last time out, he threw a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts. Fortunately, the Phillies are at home, where they are much better (35-23). The Reds are coming off an offensive explosion and travel day, so we're looking for things to even out here. Something to watch: Reds right-handed starter Tyler Mahle has reverse splits. Righties have hit .273/.346/.531 against him this year. We'll be looking for JT Realmuto, Jean Segura and Andrew McCutchen to do some damage.
