Last Week Recap
We couldn't carry our 2020 momentum into 2021, losing 2.86 units at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Bryson DeChambeau finished one shot outside the top five, resulting in our tickets finding the bottom of a trash can. The lone bright spot was Sungjae Im earning a top 10 cash at +275.
Event Preview
The Sony Open is the first full-field event on the PGA Tour in 2021. We will see 32 of the 42 competitors from last week tee it up in Honolulu this week at Waialae Country Club. Waialae features a flat terrain and narrow fairways, which will be a stark contrast coming from the Plantation Course last week.
Winner - Webb Simpson (+1200) - 0.50 units
Top 5 - Webb Simpson (-120) - 0.50 units
Simpson played about as poorly as he possibly could have in Maui and still finished T-17. He lost 6.58 strokes off the tee, the worst event for him in my database, so it's unlikely that he hits it that poorly again. Combine that with him finishing fifth in strokes gained approach last week and the fact that he's finished third and T-4 in his last two trips to Waialae, and I'm firing up Simpson in all formats.
Winner - Abraham Ancer (+2500) - 0.33 units
Top 10- Abraham Ancer (+250) - 0.33 units
Ancer flew up the leaderboard on Sunday last week, shooting a round of 66 (-7) en route to a T-17 finish. Waialae should be a much better fit for Ancer, who can take advantage of the flat, narrow par-70 layout.
Winner - Brendon Todd (+5500) - 0.25 units
Top 10- Brendon Todd (+500) - 0.40 units
Notice a trend here? Waialae is short and requires golfers who can find fairways and roll the rock. That's the blueprint for Todd, who finished T-13 last week at Kapalua. Todd's lack of distance beat him down at the Plantation Course, where he lost 5.15 strokes off the tee. He offset that with a stellar flat stick which is the most effective weapon he has lurking in his bag.
Winner - Cameron Davis (+13500) - 0.15 units
Top 10- Cameron Davis (+1100) - 0.25 units
Rarely do I fire outrights on golfers this long, but weird things happen after golfers have taken a long break, and Davis flashed some incredible raw talent last year. He contended at Wyndham and the Sanderson Farms. Waialae should be a happy hunting ground for the young Aussie, who finished T-9 here last season.
Top 10- Sebastian Munoz (+500) - 0.45 units
Munoz played himself out of the Tournament of Champions on Thursday, opening with a 75 (+2). That didn't stop him from grinding away over the final three days, playing them in 18 under par. That was the second-best aggregate score over the final three rounds, behind only Joaquin Niemann, who lost in a playoff.
Top 20- Brian Gay (+750) - 0.45 units
Gay has been feast or famine in the last six months, winning in Bermuda among many missed cuts. Gay has teed it up at the Sony Open on nine occasions, making the cut in seven of them. We aren't asking much of him to finish inside the Top 20, and these odds are too juicy to pass up.
Tournament Matchup - Webb Simpson (-118) over Harris English (-106) - 1 unit
These are two golfers I absolutely love, but English's win last week has shortened these odds to untenable levels. It wouldn't be hard to imagine a bit of a hangover for English, who just captured his first win since 2013. Simpson, on the other hand, is hungry and headed to one of the best course fits for him.
