Fade Alert - Ole Miss
By Marc Lawrence
When teams on a win streak reach the final game of the regular season, it’s frequently with a sigh of satisfaction. Contentment, though, often turns to bitter disappointment when they enter the season finale off a straight-up underdog win.
Consider – since 1980 college conference teams off back-to-back victories are just 41-63-3 ATS if their last win was as an underdog.
This week’s teams that may end up bottoming out are:
Buffalo vs. Kent State
Central Florida vs. UAB
Mississippi vs. Mississippi State
NC State vs. Miami, Fl.
Oregon State vs. Oregon State
Worse yet, they dip to 18-35-3 ATS when seeking revenge against an opponent they lost to in their most recent meeting.
One team finds itself in this role this week: Ole Miss
When cast into the role of a favorite or dog of 5 or less points in season finales, off back-to-back wins with the last as an underdog, they dip to 8-22-1 ATS. And if their opponent allows less than 27 PPG on the season they drop to 4-21-1 ATS.
The Rebels of Ole Miss will try and overcome this ‘return to earth’ phenomenon on Saturday.
To that we say, “Look Out Below”. It won’t be an asteroid you’ll hear crashing to earth this weekend. Just Johnny Reb…
Subplots aplenty as Ole Miss, Mississippi St. meet
November 27, 2008
STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Forget about recruiting and bowl games. And rankings and records, too.
When it comes to the Egg Bowl rivalry between No. 25 Mississippi and Mississippi State, Bulldogs coach Sylvester Croom explained to reporters this week, none of that matters. It's simply personal, a game that will resonate 20 years down the road when rivals meet again on the street.
``You will look him in the eye and neither of you will say a word, but each of you will know that one of you got whipped in this game,'' Croom said.
Hating each other's guts makes for good drama. The coaches save their most colorful quotes for this game. Every recruit is looking closely for validation of their decision. And the players get themselves worked up and say things that might be mistaken for dialogue in ``The Sopranos.''
``It's all about respect,'' Ole Miss defensive tackle Peria Jerry said. ``This game is all about respect.''
First-year Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt hasn't been involved in a bloodthirsty intrastate rivalry since he was a player at Oklahoma State. But he said he felt the intensity of the Rebels-Bulldogs rivalry shortly after making the move from Arkansas.
``I know from the first time I got here whether you go to a coffee shop or down the road, it's always Mississippi State or Ole Miss - 'I graduated from Mississippi State; no, I graduated from Ole Miss,''' Nutt said. ``There's a rivalry, and it's competitive. This will be the most competitive game of the year, forget about the records. You throw it all out. It's going to be a fight.''
This year, though, there is much more to be fired up about because all that other stuff really does matter. After long droughts, both teams believe they are on the move toward contender status.
For Ole Miss (7-4, 4-3), a win Friday against those confounded Bulldogs will mean a second-place finish in the Southeastern Conference Western Division and a likely Cotton Bowl berth. The game in Dallas would pay two to three times more than the bowls the Rebels would likely be invited to with a loss and is set in one of Nutt's favorite recruiting grounds.
And for Mississippi State (4-7, 2-5), a win against the Rebels would help coaches hang onto a promising recruiting class and wipe away the disappointment of a lost season following the team's 8-5 resurgence last year. This year, the Egg Bowl is the only bowl they'll play in.
The Bulldogs took the Golden Egg last year when they scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to rally from 14 down. They went to the Liberty Bowl and beat Central Florida 10-3. But little has gone right since. Injuries, inconsistency and even a missed extra point have added up to an early end for a team that expected to challenge for the division title.
``I have never been through a season where I have seen so many bad things happen to one team,'' Croom said. ``I can honestly say there has not been a day in practice I thought we gave up and there has not been a game I felt they did not give their all. You can question a lot of things about this football team, but you cannot question their heart or their character.''
Oddsmakers question their ability to hang with Ole Miss, which is ranked for the first time since the final poll of the 2003 season. The Rebels opened a 12 1/2-point favorite and were up to 16 by Thanksgiving.
And the obstacles do seem to be stacked in Mississippi State's way. The Bulldogs haven't won in Oxford since 1998 and suffer from a lack of offensive punch. Their only consistent offensive threat is tailback Anthony Dixon, who rushed for a career-high 179 yards and scored three touchdowns against Arkansas last week.
``I think him running the ball this week like he did last week will be hard to stop because he's a train wreck,'' Mississippi State center J.C. Brignone said.
Dixon will be up against the nation's No. 9 rushing defense, though. And if he's hemmed in by Peria Jerry and the Rebels' formidable defensive line, the Bulldogs have few other options. But the 240-pound junior gained confidence against the Razorbacks and showed he can be a two-dimensional threat on any down.
He had a 63-yard touchdown run and a 40-yard run that set up another. He also caught two touchdowns, including a one-handed grab.
Dixon would love to finish the season by putting it all together one last time.
``The main goal of us going to a bowl game and maybe getting to a championship, that really hurt and left a bad taste in my mouth this year because I don't think we filled out our potential at all,'' Dixon said. ``At least we can salvage some of it by beating Ole Miss.'
NCAAF RESEARCH REPORT

Central Michigan vs. Eastern Michigan
Note that over 75% favor Central Michigan. And, why not? This team is 8-3 and has a QB that has thrown for 15 touchdowns and 4 picks in Lefevour, and Eastern Michigan actually beat this team 48-45 last year in overtime. So, this is a revenge game for Central Michigan to return the favor on the road. Central Michigan of course comes off that touchdowns loss to Ball State at home and this is a bounce-back. Eastern Michigan comes off a tough 52-55 loss at Temple. CM has yet to lose back to back covers all year. I will stay away. Look more than 75% is on CM, but the have revenge from last year and come off a loss. Maybe the public will get a bone here and take this one given the situation.
West Virginia vs. Pittsburgh
This game is on ABC. Both teams arrive at 7-3 so which bowl games will they settle on is the question. The line actually opened up at WV as a -1.5 favorite and quickly went up to -3. Around 59% favor the road Mountaineers here. Remember, Pitt beat WVU 13-9 last year so this is a huge revenge game for WVU. WV has played some great road games including winning big at Connecticut and most recently at Louisville. Pitt comes off a tough loss at Cincy which was a valiant effort, and remember, they are competent in that they blew out Louisville at home and won at South Florida nearly covering by 19 points outright as a dog. Tough to go either way here, but I lean slightly on WVU, but Pitt can easily win this as well coming off a loss. Tough game to find value if you ask me. I wouldn't be surprised if an over took place here.
Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss
The Egg Bowl! Great rivalry here. The line opened up at -13.5 and moved up to -18 currently. And, why not? If Alabama puts the pounding on this team b/c of some frustrating loss to the Bulldogs, then why can't Ole Miss who just ended up beating LSU on the road and heck, they even beat Florida on the road to give the Gators their sole loss. Miss. State has yet to win a road game this year, Miss. State beat this team by a field goal last year at home, and Miss State comes off a high in beating Arkansas the previous week, but they have yet to put back to back winning weeks on the board and Ole Miss is clicking on all fronts if you ask me, I'm sure Houston Nutt is being given a little extra bonus for blowing this team out and I wouldn't be surprised if he does. Revenge and to add a little something more to the contract as well as his team's overall record at 8-4, Ole Miss is going to be a team to watch in the future - this team is for real.
LSU vs. Arkansas
Things have gone south for both of these teams. You really can't blame Les Miles at LSU to be frank - I mean, the guy does not have a quarterback, it's similar to the Tennessee situation, their quarterbacks blow. By the way, let it be known that I hate Bobby Petrino with a passion. I hope that jerk-off loses every game this season and every game in seasons to come as the way he left the Falcons was despicable and pathetic. I hate Jim Mora with a passion as well as I think he is a terrible coach and he will drive the Seahawks to misery next year. Remember, I think Mora and his father were both terrible coaches. Arkansas beat this team by 2 points on the road last year if you remember in triple OT. LSU of course has that revenge game in mind and although I think their quarterback situation is questionable, I lean on LSU and the blowout urge as I just don't trust the Hogs.
Kent vs. Buffalo
I just want to note that the line here opened up at -13.5 for Buffalo and has quickly down to -9.5 for Kent and in MAC football many, many shady things happen. And notice, that is with 75% on Buffalo so just be wary Buff backers, I wouldn't be surprised if Kent makes a game out of this, as Buff beat this team in overtime last year and Buff comes off an embarrassing 14-42 loss at home to Northern Illinois and they likely bounce-back here nicely.
Bowling Green vs. Toledo
Believe it or not, many believe that Toledo will make the upset here. Despite about 65% on visiting BG here, Toledo went from a +4.5 dog to now a +1.5 home dog. BG beat this team 37-10 last year and in many ways, this is Toledo's Bowl game. BG comes off a tough OT loss to Buffalo at home though and did beat Ohio 28-3 on the road and played admirably against Northern Illinois on the road falling short by just a field goal 13-16. Remember, Toledo is competent at home losing 23-24 to Central Michigan and just thumped Miami of Ohio at home 42-14. No thanks on this game.
Fresno State vs. Boise State
Well, is it really fair to give Fresno State this many points. Fresno State has played very well and they haven't lost to any team this year by a margin such as this. I mean, I know Fresno State is 2-9 ATS this year, but to give this offense nearly 3 touchdowns? Heck, one of their losses was at home to Hawaii by a field goal, another loss was to La Tech by a field goal and they did lose to Nevada by 13 at home. But, remember, Boise beat Hawaii by 20 at home which means they could do nearly anything to Fresno State on the blue turf - after all, Hawaii beat Fresno this year at Fresno State. I will never go against the Broncos on the Smurf Turf, will just be a fan this game. After all, you can't see a 45-21 type ending? Heck, I can even see a 42-37 (OT) ending as well, I can see this game both ways. no thanks.
