Miami Dolphins at New York Jets (-7)
Why Dolphins cover: Miami has pulled off SU and ATS victories in last three road games against Jets, all from underdog role. Coming off bye week and 0-4 start, Fish should be hungry for win, or short of that, a spread-cover. Over-hyped New York just 1-5 ATS last six games.
Why Jets cover: Rex Ryan’s troops have lost three straight by average of 12 ppg. That should have them desperate to stop looking like awful team and more like one that reached last two AFC title games. Miami hasn’t covered since last season, going 0-6-1 ATS in past seven starts.
Total (43.5): Miami on 8-2 under run on road, but over for Jets on surges of 22-7 overall and 7-1 inside AFC East.
MNF - Dolphins at Jets
By Kevin Rogers
Two AFC East rivals on losing streaks meet up in New Jersey on Monday night to put a wrap on Week 6 as the Jets host the winless Dolphins. Miami is fresh off the bye week, but turns to backup quarterback Matt Moore to replace Chad Henne, who is out for the season with an injured shoulder. The Jets are riding a three-game skid, as Rex Ryan's club needs to get back on track in the competitive AFC playoff race.
New York (2-3) started the season with a pair of home victories over Dallas and Jacksonville, but the highway proved to be a disaster for the Jets with losses at Oakland, Baltimore, and New England. The Jets squandered a 17-7 lead to the Raiders in a 34-24 setback as three-point favorites back in Week 3. New York was listed as an underdog in the next two road defeats, as the Jets' vaunted defense allowed over 30 points against the Ravens and Patriots.
The Dolphins (0-4) are struggling to score points by averaging 17.2 ppg, while scoring just three touchdowns in the last three weeks. Henne went down with a shoulder injury in the loss at San Diego in Week 4 and elected for a season-ending surgery, putting an already anemic offense into the hands of Moore. The former Panthers' signal-caller threw for 167 yards and an interception in a 26-16 defeat to the Chargers as 6½-point underdogs, dropping Miami to 0-3-1 ATS this season.
The field-goal happy Dolphins have scored just one touchdown past the first quarter in the last three games against the Texans, Browns, and Chargers. Since allowing 38 points in the season opener to the explosive Patriots, Miami has cashed the 'under' in each of the previous three games.
This series has been owned by the road team recently by compiling a 6-2 SU/ATS mark since 2007. The Jets swept the season series that year when the Dolphins were a dreadful 1-15, including a 40-13 home loss in December. The away club won each meeting in 2008 when Brett Favre arrived with the Jets, as New York captured an opening day win in Miami. The Dolphins returned the favor at the Meadowlands with a 24-17 victory to clinch the AFC East title on the final day of the season as three-point 'dogs.
Miami won a pair of high-scoring contests in Ryan's first season with the Jets in 2009, including a Monday night triumph at Sun Life Stadium, 31-27 as three-point 'dogs. The road teams ruled again in 2010, as the Jets held off the Dolphins, 31-23 in a September primetime game. The next meeting was ugly as the Fins won 10-6 in New Jersey as five-point 'dogs despite throwing for only 30 yards.
The Jets' off-the-field bravado doesn't live up to its on-field performance on Monday nights in Ryan's tenure with a 1-3 SU/ATS mark since 2009. The only victory in this stretch came last season in a rainy night against Favre and the Vikings in a 29-20 front-door cover as four-point favorites. This is the third time in three seasons the Jets have endured a losing streak of three games, but New York is 2-0 SU/ATS while allowing six points in wins over the Raiders and Panthers (2009).
The Dolphins aren't much better under the Monday night lights in the Tony Sparano era with a 1-3 SU/ATS record, including the season-opening setback to New England as home 'dogs. In fact, the last time Miami won a road game on Monday night came back in 1999 as the Dolphins blew out the defending champion Broncos in Denver, 38-21 as 5½-point underdogs. It would also be fair to mention that was the first game of the post-John Elway era with the Broncos.
Under Sparano, the Dolphins have put together a 15-6 ATS record as road 'dogs, including three consecutive covers at New York. The Jets are less than profitable 7-9 ATS when laying points at home, as Gang Green has split the two games at Met Life Stadium this season.
The Jets are listed as seven-point favorites, while the total is set at 42½. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN and kicks off at 8:30 PM EST.
Dolphins at Jets: What Bettors Need to Know
Covers.com
Miami Dolphins at New York Jets (-6.5, 42.5)
THE STORY: Mired in a three-game losing streak that has somewhat muted bombastic coach Rex Ryan, the New York Jets finally return home to take on the winless Miami Dolphins on Monday night. On paper, a visit by their AFC East Division rival appears to be exactly what the Jets need to snap out of their funk. Only one problem: Miami has won its last three visits to East Rutherford and has beaten New York in four of the last five meetings. Coming off a bye week, the Dolphins will play their first game without QB Chad Henne, who is done for the season with a separated shoulder.
ABOUT THE DOLPHINS (0-4): With Matt Moore getting the start in place of Henne, Miami will be hoping rookie RB Daniel Thomas is ready to go after missing two games with hamstring injuries. Moore threw for 167 yards and an interception after replacing Henne in San Diego. He has 16 TDs and 18 picks in 23 games. Thomas has rushed for 202 yards in the two games he has played and could play a vital role against New York’s soft run defense. WR Brandon Marshall, who has a quiet 22 receptions on the season, has vowed to play like a “monster” Monday night.
ABOUT THE JETS (2-3): Veteran WR Derrick Mason was traded to Houston this week following critical remarks of the team’s offense, but New York’s biggest problems have been on the other side of the ball. The Jets have allowed at least 30 points in three straight games and were helpless to stop the run against Oakland and New England. With QB Mark Sanchez and the passing game struggling, Ryan’s promise of a ground-and-pound attack led to a season-high 83 yards and a TD by RB Shonn Greene in last week’s 30-21 loss at New England. WR Santonio Holmes has eight catches during the three-game skid.
EXTRA POINTS:
1. Miami is tied for the second-most wins (40) on Monday Night Football, but the Jets are 4-0 at home against the Dolphins in such matchups.
2. New York has not dropped four straight games since 2007, which was the last season the Dolphins started 0-5.
3. “Everything stinks when you lose. The food tastes terrible, beer's warm, everything. It's rotten, when you lose it's absolutely rotten. But there's one way to fix it and that's to win, and when you win, everything is great. So that's what we're planning on doing.” – Ryan on his approach to Monday’s game.
LINE MOVEMENT:
The line opened with the Jets giving 7.5 points but it’s been bet down to 6.5 at most shops. That might not seem like a big move, but it takes a lot of action to move a line a full point around the touchdown mark.
Not much going on with the total. The line opened as low as 41.5 and is not sitting at 42.5 at most sportsbooks.
TRENDS:
The Dolphins are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games as road underdogs, 11-4-1 ATS in their last 16 road games overall, but 0-6-1 ATS in their last seven games overall.
The Jets are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games against teams with losing records but 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.
The over is 22-7 in the Jets’ last 29 games overall.
PREDICTION: Jets 27, Dolphins 13. Buoyed by a return to its home stadium, New York harasses Moore into multiple turnovers and breezes to an easy victory.
Dolphins Clash With Jets On Monday Night Football
By: Michael Robinson
The New York Jets are dealing with a 3-game losing streak and some internal dissent as they host the Miami Dolphins on ESPN’s Monday Night Football.
New York opened as 9-point favorites, but it was quickly bet down and they’re now a solid seven on the Don Best odds screen. The NFL betting total is 42 1/2 points and kickoff from MetLife Stadium will be at 8:30 p.m. (ET).
The Jets (2-3 straight-up, 1-4 against the spread) are coming off a brutal 3-game road trip, losses at Oakland (34-24), Baltimore (34-17) and New England (30-21). All three were ATS failures with a late Patriots field goal the difference last week in the 7½-point closing spread.
All three of those games went ‘over’ the total which is 4-1 for New York on the year.
Rex Ryan knows his team must turn things around quickly if it has any hope of backing up his latest Super Bowl prediction. The boastful coach is also fine with players shooting their mouths off, as long as it’s about the opposition. Third receiver Derrick Mason recently criticized the Jets’ offense and got a one way ticket to Houston.
Mason’s departure seemed to surprise his teammates, but not quiet them. Receiver Santonio Holmes questioned the offensive line just yesterday after also bashing that unit (and quarterback Mark Sanchez) after the Baltimore loss.
Holmes is no danger of being traded no matter what he says. He may only have 224 receiving yards, but he’s the most dynamic
threat in a struggling pass attack (221.2 YPG, ranked 21st). Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer could be on the hot seat, at least according to the fans, but guys like Sanchez (80.4 quarterback rating, ranked 19th) need to play better.
New York vowed to go back to the ‘ground and pound’ rushing attack last week, but could only muster 97 yards on 25 carries. Meanwhile, New England ran for 152 yards and the once vaunted Jets run defense is allowing 134.8 YPG, ranked 26th.
The Jets at least return home where they last played on September 18, a 32-3 drubbing of Jacksonville as 9-point favorites. They also beat Dallas in the home opener (27-24), although some awful late plays by Tony Romo aided the outcome.
The Dolphins (0-4 SU, 0-3-1 ATS) are one of three winless teams, but at least had a bye-week to try and regroup. Coach Tony Sparano’s job status is in even worse jeopardy than Schottenheimer’s and any week could literally be his last.
Sparano wasn’t helped by quarterback Chad Henne’s decision to have surgery on his separated non-throwing shoulder. He’s out for the year and while he wasn’t great (79 quarterback rating, ranked 23rd), he was the best option. Former Carolina Panther Matt Moore is now the starter with Sage Rosenfels just signed to be the backup.
Moore has 13 career starts since coming into the league in 2007 out of Oregon State. He has average offensive weapons at best with leading receiver Brandon Marshall (313 yards) saying he plans on getting ejected during the game. That’s a strange comment, even for him.
The running game has a shot to move the ball with rookie Daniel Thomas (hamstring) expected to return after missing his last game. He’s averaged 101 yards in the two games he’s played. Reggie Bush is also dangerous as a change-of-pace guy and a receiver out of the backfield.
The Miami offense ranks 16th this year (352.8 YPG), while the defense has taken a big step back at 28th (414.5 YPG). A big reason for the latter is just two total turnovers. The team has faced three of the best quarterbacks in the league in Tom Brady, Matt Schaub and Philip Rivers, so seeing Sanchez is almost a treat.
The Dolphins are 0-1-1 ATS on the road, losing 17-16 at Cleveland as 1-point underdogs and 26-16 at San Diego as 6½-point ‘dogs. The ‘under’ went 2-0 and is 8-2 in their last 10 road games.
Miami has surprisingly won the last three games in New York (all as underdogs) and is 4-1 SU and ATS in the last five meetings overall. Ryan has only won one of his four meetings as head coach, 31-23 in Miami last September.
The injury report for both teams is looking good with several starters listed only as probable. Monday night weather is expected to be in the 50s with a few showers possible.
Dolphins And 'Over' Get Early Nod On MNF
By: Jeff Grant
The Miami Dolphins (0-4) and New York Jets (2-3) will meet up in an AFC East divisional matchup with both teams looking to turn things around. Kickoff from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, is scheduled for 8:30 (ET) on ESPN’s Monday Night Football.
Oddsmakers sent out the Jets as heavy 8-point home favorites, but the early wagering has knocked that number down by 1½ in most spots. The total has seen heavy action to the 'over' due to the early-season scoring in the NFL, settling in at 42½ across the board.
Sharp bettors may get back on New York once the status of center Nick Mangold becomes official, as he’s currently listed as probable with an ankle injury that has slowed him down for most of the season.
Part of the line movement away from the Jets also has to do with the reports all week that the clubhouse was in disarray following the club's third consecutive defeat at New England in Week 5. New York abruptly traded wide receiver Derrick Mason to Houston this past Wednesday after Mason publicly questioned the Jets play calling on offense.
New York GM Mike Tannenbaum denied that Mason's criticism had anything to do with the deal, noting it was "performance on the field" driving the trade that will see the Texans give up an undisclosed late-round draft pick in 2012.
Miami enters the game in relatively good health due to being one of six teams coming off the first bye week of the season, but starting quarterback Chad Henne (shoulder) is out for the season due to an injury suffered against the San Diego Chargers in Week 4.
Head coach Tony Sparano is certainly on the hot seat and is favored at many books to be the first coach fired this season, but he’s also 3-0 straight up on the road in this series. Simply fading the Dolphins due to the injury under center could be a mistake,
Matt Moore gained plenty of experience as a starter during his three years with the Carolina Panthers before hitting South Beach this offseason.
The good news for the Jets is they're playing a pretty bad Miami squad. The bad news is the Dolphins have had New York's number in the recent matchups. Miami has won four of the last five meetings, covering the spread in all four outright wins.
'Over' bettors in the head-to-head meetings were enjoying a 3-game win streak before the clash last December in New York.
Weather forecasts tomorrow suggest mostly cloudy skies and game-time temperatures in the mid-50s, while a slight breeze of 5-10 mph will be blowing out of the southwest.
The Jets will need to quickly refocus after Monday’s game, hosting the rested San Diego Chargers (4-1), who will come into the contest as the AFC West leaders.
Miami returns home for Week 7 action, hosting the Denver Broncos who spent their bye week getting Tim Tebow ready to assume the starting quarterback role. Adding to the hype of Tebow making his first start this season, the game at Sun Life Stadium will honor the Florida Gators' 2008 national championship team. Denver’s second-year quarterback was a member of that team that handed the Oklahoma Sooners a 24-14 loss in the BCS Championship Game on Jan. 8, 2009.
