Green Bay Packers vs. Chicago Bears
Prediction: 4* Chicago Bears -4

Soldier Field will be the site of tonight’s NFC clash between the host Chicago Bears and the visiting Green Bay Packers. The Bears have to win tonight to keep any hope of a playoff berth alive while the Packers loss last week to Jacksonville assured them that they would be home this postseason.

Chicago needs to win its final two games and hope the Vikings lose next week at the Giants to claim the North title. The Bears are still on the outside looking in for a wildcard spot if they fail to win the North Title.

The Packers blew-out the Bears back in November at Lambeau Field 37 to 3. They had a 427 to 234 yard advantage over the Bears in that contest. Since that contest the Packers are 0-4 both SU and ATS and have lost six of their last seven games overall.

The Bears are 3-1 since the loss, with three covers. Chicago’s come-from-behind 27-24 overtime win over New Orleans at Soldier Field last Thursday night was clutch and kept alive its playoff hopes. After tying the game with two seconds left in regulation, Robbie Gould won it with a 35-yard field goal. We know that teams off a home win on a Thursday are a money-making 14-6-1 ATS in their next contest.

The Home Team is 2-0 both SU and ATS the last two in this series and the straight up winner is 9-0-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings overall. Green Bay is 1-5 ATS in their last six games following a game where they failed to cover the spread. The Bears are 4-0-1 ATS their last 5 during the month of December and they have won 9 straight under Head Coach Lovie Smith when the temperature is below freezing.

We have two NFL Power Systems that are active for tonight’s game. The first tells us to Play ON NFL teams that are division favorites of seven or less points and are off two SU wins in their last two games, 26-8 ATS. Our second NFL System says In Games 2-15, play ON a Monday favorite/pick ‘em off an OT SU win in its last game, 13-0 ATS since 1983 and averages covering the spread by 13.3 points per game.

Since HC Lovie Smith took over as the Bears Head Coach he puts special emphasis on games versus their heated rival the Green Bay Packers and he has managed a 6-3 record against them. The fact that this is a revenge game also triggers a solid tech set that tells us that the Bears are 10-1 ATS in home games revenging a road loss against an opponent by 14 points or more.

The Bears get their revenge and also live to fight another day for their playoff lives. The Packers at some point may have wanted to end the playoff hopes of the Bears but tonight’s frigid conditions and the fact they lost last week and that ended any hopes for them to make the playoffs is too much to overcome and they toss in the proverbial towel and take one on the chin tonight.

GRADED PREDICTION: 4* CHICAGO BEARS -4

College Basketball Selections

Tulane vs. George Mason -14

Mason is 61-42-4 ATS at home. 56-38-4 ATS as home favorite. 20-9-1 ATS after winning their last two games. 19-7-1 ATS as a home favorite after winning their last two games and a perfect 6-0 ATS as a non-conference home favorite after winning their last two games.

PLAY: 5* GEORGE MASON -14

Temple -5.5 vs. Long Beach State 9:00PM EST.

Play ON teams after losing ATS and going Under in their last two games, 31-17 ATS when installed as a home underdog. Play ON teams after losing SU / ATS and going Under in their last three games, 24-8-2 ATS when playing at home.

PLAY: 3* LONG BEACH STATE +5.5

PICK: over
Your pick will be graded at: 197.5 Belmont
EXPERT: Ted Sevransky

TITLE: Red Hot NBA Run Rolls On
REASON FOR PICK: We cashed an easy winner on Friday Night betting the Nets and Mavs Over the total as the Nets hung 121 on Dallas, and the game flew Over by 20 points. There’s absolutely no reason to expect anything different here. Here’s what I wrote about New Jersey on Friday:

“The Nets have been struggling of late, because opposing teams have been able to slow them down. When the Nets were pulling off one upset after the next prior to this recent skid, point guard Devin Harris was pushing the pace at every opportunity, and the Nets ranked among the NBA leaders in fast break points. The numbers don’t lie. In eight of the Nets last ten wins, they’ve scored at least 105 points. In seven of the ten, they scored 112 or more. The teams that have been beating New Jersey have successfully slowed them down. The Nets have been held to 94 or less in nine of their twelve defeats.

“Clearly, we can see the impact of pace on the Nets results, a team that simply cannot get bogged down in a half court game if they expect to emerge victorious. And, after struggling for the last ten days or so, we can expect head coach Lawrence Frank to instruct his team to get up and down the floor tonight, taking advantage of the quickness edge that Devin Harris enjoys.”

Houston has a reputation as a sluggish offensive ballclub, but that reputation is based on past results, with virtually no validity here in 2008. Again, the numbers don’t lie. Houston ran with Minnesota on Saturday in a game that went Over the total by 19 points. They ran with Sacramento prior to that, as well as Denver. In two recent games against the ultra-fast paced Warriors, the Rockets hung 119 and 131 on Golden State in a pair of games that went Over the total by at least 15 points apiece. And with Aaron Brooks taking over at the point guard position for the injured Rafer Alston, the Rockets offense is actually more efficient in recent ballgames – Brooks wants to run every bit as much as Harris does. 4* Take the Over.
