Betting Preview: Miami at Florida State
The opening week of college football wraps up Monday night with a classic rivalry game as No. 18 Florida State hosts Miami at 8PM ET at Doak S. Campbell Stadium.
A tumultuous offseason for the Seminoles has left many questioning Bobby Bowden’s future as head coach. Bowden enters his 34th season with Florida State, but the NCAA is looking into removing 12 of his career 382-wins due to an academic cheating scandal during the 2006-07 school year. Still, Bowden has a talented team coming into 2009, with eight starters back on offense. Christian Ponder enters his junior year as quarterback after throwing for 2,006 yards in 2008 with 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. The Seminoles lose their leading rushers and receivers from 2008, but return their starting offensive line, which should help the offense run efficiently. On defense, the Seminoles have five starters back, led by linebacker Dekoda Watson, who had eight tackles for loss last season.
The Hurricanes are in their third year under coach Randy Shannon. Shannon coached Miami to a 7-6 record last season after going 5-7 in 2007. Shannon has 15 starters back and on offense Jacory Harris will take the lead at quarterback after splitting time last season with Robert Marve, who transferred after the 2008 season. Harris threw for 1,195 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season. Graig Cooper rushed for 841 yards in 2008 and is back his season at tailback while Miami also returns its top four leading receivers, led by Aldarius Johnson. On defense, the Hurricanes are led by sophomore linebacker Sean Spence, who was the ACC Defensive Freshman of the Year after recording 82 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss last season.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com have made Florida State 6-point home favorites over Miami on Monday night. The over/under total for this game has been established at 48.5
