NCAAFB Betting Preview: Mississippi at Memphis
A crazy weekend of college football continues Sunday when No. 8 Mississippi travels to Memphis to face the Tigers at 3:30PM ET from Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
The two schools sit just 85 miles apart and are meeting in the season opened for the sixth-straight season. The Rebels have won the last four meetings, but only by an average of 6.5 points per-win.
Houston Nutt has the Mississippi program buzzing after a 9-4 season in 2008, including a win over the national champions, Florida, during the year. A bowl win over Texas Tech has created a lot of momentum for the Rebels entering this season, and Mississippi brings back 16 starters to the field. Quarterback Jevan Snead is back after throwing for 2,762 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2008. The Rebels also bring back its top four rushers from last season. The four combined to rush for over 2,000 yards on the ground. Shay Hodge will lead the Rebels’ receiving core after catching eight touchdown passes in 2008. Mississippi does lose key pieces to both lines with Michael Oher and Peria Jerry both becoming first round NFL draft picks.
The Tigers are coming offa 6-7 record in 2008 under ninth-year coach Tommy West. The Tigers scored just as many points as they allowed last season, but bring back seven starters on defense, led by LSU transfer, Derrick Odom, at linebacker. On offense, the Tigers lose four offensive linemen from last season’s starting unit, which could cause problems for senior quarterback Arkelon Hall. Hall struggled in 2008, throwing for 2,275 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Hall has his top target back in Carlos Singleton, who caught 52 passesfor 791 yards and five touchdowns last season. Curtis Steele also returns in the backfield for Memphis. Steele rushed for 1,223 yards with seven touchdowns in 2008.
Oddsmakers from onlinesports book Sports Interaction have made Mississippi 16.5-point road favorites over Memphis on Sunday. The over/under total for this game has been established at 54.5.
