Monday Night Football: Bears at Jets
By Covers.com
Chicago Bears at New York Jets (-2.5, 44)
Jay Cutler threw four touchdown passes as the Chicago Bears rallied from a 17-point deficit to defeat the San Francisco 49ers a week ago. Cutler already has six touchdown passes and looks to add to that total when the Bears visit the New York Jets on Monday night. Cutler is 6-1 on Monday Night Football, including three straight wins, with 14 touchdowns against just three interceptions.
While the Bears rallied, the Jets imploded last week, squandering an 18-point advantage in their upset bid at Green Bay - a loss that came in typical New York fashion. Just when it appeared that the Jets had climbed back into a tie with the Packers on a long touchdown pass by Geno Smith late in the fourth quarter, officials ruled that New York offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg called timeout before the play began. Rex Ryan's group will look to bounce back from that disaster and beat the Bears for the first time since 2000.
LINE HISTORY: Pinnacle Sports opened the Jets as 1-point home faves, but that is now -2.5. The total opened at 45.5 and is down to 44.
INJURY REPORT: Bears - WR Alshon Jeffery (Probable, hamstring), DE Jared Allen (Probable, back), C Roberto Garza (Questionable, ankle), S Chris Conte (Questionable, shoulder), DT Jeremiah Ratliff (Questionable, head). Jets - RB Chris Johnson (Probable, ankle), CB Dee Milliner (Questionable, quad), WR Eric Decker (Questionable, hamstring).
COVERS POWER RANKINGS: Bears (-2) + Jets (+2.25) + home field (-3.0) = Bears -1.25
WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "The Jets blew a big lead in Green Bay but they catch Chicago in a possible letdown spot. The Jets are 6-0 against the spread in their last six home games off a loss versus an opponent off a SU/ATS win." Covers Expert Matt Fargo
ABOUT THE BEARS (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U): Chicago's comeback on Sunday night was even more unlikely considering that Cutler actually seemed to respond after taking a huge blow to his ribs. He threw three scoring passes to Brandon Marshall and the Bears' defense shut down the 49ers in the second half. But, not all went well for Chicago, which lost five starters on the defensive side of the ball in the contest, including All-Pro cornerback Charles Tillman, who is out for the season with a torn triceps muscle.
ABOUT THE JETS (1-1 SU, 0-1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U): The Jets could be without top receiver Eric Decker (hamstring) but they may want to run the ball anyway against a Chicago defense which ranks 27th in the league against the rush (160 yards per game). On defense, New York has yet to solve its problematic secondary and allowed Jordy Nelson to romp for 209 yards receiving last week. New York won its home opener but that victory is looking increasingly unimpressive as it came against Oakland, which appears to be one of the worst teams in the league.
TRENDS:
* Bears are 3-0-1 ATS in their last four meetings.
* Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Bears are 1-7 ATS in their last eight games following a ATS win.
* Over is 15-2 in Jets last 17 games in Week 3.
COVERS CONSENSUS: As of Sunday evening, 65 percent of wagers on Covers Consensus were backing the Bears.
MNF - Bears at Jets
By Kevin Rogers
VegasInsider.com
Week 3 of the NFL season concludes at Met Life Stadium with two teams that got off to significantly different starts last Sunday and finished with surprising results. The Bears fell behind the 49ers, 20-7 after three quarters, but Chicago outscored San Francisco, 21-0 in the fourth quarter to stun the Niners by a 28-20 count as seven-point underdogs. Jay Cutler tossed three touchdowns in the final quarter, including two to Brandon Marshall to even Chicago’s record at 1-1.
The Jets didn’t have as much luck on the highway, squandering a 21-3 advantage in a 31-24 setback at Green Bay. New York opened as eight-point road underdogs, but that number dropped to seven by kickoff, so it depends on when you grabbed the Jets to judge it as either a Jets’ push or a Jets’ win. The Jets had an opportunity to tie the game with five minutes left in the fourth quarter on a Geno Smith touchdown pass to Jeremy Kurley on fourth down, but a timeout was called on the New York sideline, negating the score.
New York returns home owning a 7-2 SU and 6-3 ATS record at Met Life Stadium since the start of 2013, which includes a 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS mark in the favorite role. The only ATS loss as a favorite in this span came to the Raiders in Week 1, as Oakland scored a late touchdown to cover as 6 ½-point underdogs, but the Jets held on for a 19-14 victory. New York outgained Oakland, 402-158, while limiting six of its last nine home opponents to 20 points or fewer.
The Bears hit the road once again racking up the cross-country miles after last week’s trip to San Francisco, then returning to the Windy City, followed by its first road matchup with the Jets since 2006. The last time the Bears and Jets hooked up in 2010 at Soldier Field, Chicago held off New York, 38-34 in a back-and-forth affair. Chicago cashed as 1½-point favorites as Cutler threw three touchdown passes and Matt Forte rushed for 113 yards and a score.
Under Marc Trestman, Chicago has owned the AFC with four wins in five tries. The lone defeat came in the season opener in overtime against Buffalo, but the Bears scored 40 points at Pittsburgh and 38 at Cleveland last season, while going 4-1 to the ‘over’ in the past five interconference matchups. The Bears are 7-2 to the ‘over’ in nine road games in Trestman’s short tenure, which includes the comeback victory at San Francisco on a 47 total with 48 points.
The Jets are playing their fifth Monday night game at Met Life Stadium under Rex Ryan, splitting the first four contests, while covering three times. In its lone Monday night contest last season, New York went to Atlanta and shocked the Falcons as 10-point ‘dogs, 30-28 in Smith’s primetime debut, as the former West Virginia standout tossed three touchdowns.
The Bears put together a pair of dominating efforts in Monday games in 2013, knocking off the Packers as 10-point underdogs, 27-20 (even though Aaron Rodgers left the contest early), while routing the Cowboys, 45-28 as 1½-point home favorites. Dating back to 2011, Chicago has won five of its past six games on Monday night, including three victories away from Soldier Field.
The favorites fared well in Week 3, posting an 11-4 SU and 9-6 ATS record. Favorites of less than a field goal put together a 4-3 SU/ATS mark, including home victories by the Giants and Lions are short ‘chalk.’ Monday night home teams own a 2-1 SU and 1-2 ATS record this season, as the Colts fell short against the Eagles last week at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The Jets opened as 1 ½-point favorites, but that number has slowly crept to 2½ at several books. The total has dropped from 46 to 44½ at most spots as temperatures are expected to be in the mid-60’s. The game kicks off at 8:35 PM and can be seen nationally on ESPN.
Bears vs. Jets Betting Preview and Pick
By: Mike Wilkening
Sportingnews.com
The Bears have entered the teeth of their schedule.
And they have a little wind in their sails.
The Bears’ 28-20 Week 2 comeback win at San Francisco prevented a disastrous 0-2 start for Chicago, which plays five of its next seven away from Soldier Field. This was one of the grittiest triumphs of the young season. The Bears shook off a slow start, made the proper adjustments and rallied to pull away from a formidable opponent playing on its home turf.
It would be hard to blame the Bears, then, if they came into Monday night’s game at the Jets (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) with an extra dose of confidence. If the Bears are capable of knocking off the 49ers, surely a win against the Jets is within Chicago’s scope.
About the Jets: like the Bears, they are .500 after two games, but their five-point Week 1 win vs. Oakland didn’t get many style points, and their Week 2 loss at Green Bay highlighted their limitations. While the Jets built a 21-3 second-quarter lead at Green Bay, they could not hold it, and the Packers swept by for a seven-point win. In the final 40 minutes of regulation, the Jets were outscored 28-3.
Can the Jets bounce back? The betting market seems to think so; the Jets are favored in this game, and the line has gone up. But the underdog Bears have an offense like Green Bay’s, one that could give New York some real worries. We know this: The schedule-makers did well to have these teams face off on the first day of fall.
The Line: Jets -3 (EVEN) Total: 45.5
Line movement: We can sum it up this way: J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS. The early money appears to have come in on New York, which widely opened as a 1-point favorite but is now laying a field goal.
"It’s not a surprise to see the Jets move to -3," Las Vegas SuperBook manager Ed Salmons told The Linemakers on Sporting News last week. "... It’s hard to imagine (the Bears) can go win another game on the road, given the state of their injuries and everything else going on."
Most shops on Sunday were dealing -3 with lessened vig on the favorite, but the South Points, whose policy it is never to come off the standard -110 vig, had Jets -2.5.
The total hasn’t moved much. Fun fact: this is the 10th meeting between these teams since 1979 – and none of the previous matchups had a total of higher than 41. Also, eight of those nine games went UNDER. For updated lines from around Las Vegas, visit our live odds page.
Trends that matter: The Jets are 19-24-2 against the number as favorites in Rex Ryan’s tenure as head coach (44.2 percent).
The Jets are 3-1 ATS in Monday-night home games under Ryan. Overall, the Jets are 12-8-1 ATS at home on Mondays since 1978 (60 percent).
In Ryan’s tenure, the OVER is 8-6-1 in Jets games with a total of 45 points or higher (57.1 percent).
The Bears are just 2-6 ATS and 3-5 straight-up off a win in Marc Trestman’s time as coach.
Jets’ secondary under pressure: The Jets’ cornerback play looms a big concern on Monday night. Bears wideouts Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery are difficult matchups – tall, athletic, physical targets who can beat tight coverage. Neither is 100 percent – Jeffery wasn’t at top speed because of a hamstring injury in Week 2, while Marshall played through an ankle injury. Nevertheless, both were key contributors in the Bears’ win at San Francisco, with Marshall catching three TD passes.
Bears’ run defense gets a test: The Jets’ ground game presents a real challenge for Chicago. The Jets are deep at tailback, and quarterback Geno Smith (17 carries, 64 yards, one TD) runs well and often, too. The Bears have allowed 5.3 yards per carry in two games, with opponents racking up 320 yards and four TDs on 60 attempts.
Smith’s time to shine: Smith followed a sharp Week 1 (22-of-28 passing) with a so-so Week 2 (16-of-32). But there will be plays to be made against the Chicago pass defense. The Bears’ secondary isn’t as deep with cornerback Charles Tillman lost for the season with a right triceps tear. If Smith returns to his opening week form, he can thrive against the Bears.
Chicago’s kicking game must be sound: The Bears fell behind early in Week 2 after a punt was blocked deep in their territory. Chicago has a stronger offense than New York and has to believe it can eventually pull away on Monday night, all things being equal. However, special teams errors could ruin the Bears’ best-laid plans.
Injuries that matter: Bears starting center Roberto Garza and left guard Matt Slauson missed Week 2 with ankle injuries. However, the Bears allowed just one sack in the upset of San Francisco. Marshall and Jeffery remain on the injury report, but both seem likely to play Monday night.
For the Jets, keep an eye on the health of wide receiver Eric Decker, who has a hamstring injury. Also, Johnson and cornerback Dee Milliner are dealing with ankle ailments.
Weather: Temperatures in the mid-60s, light winds and a 10 percent chance of rain are expected for Monday’s game at MetLife Stadium. Visit Weather Underground for the latest forecast.
The Linemakers’ lean: We're on board with the line move to the Jets and the reason behind it. Winning back-to-back primetime games is tough ask of any team, so this is a spot to fade the Bears. We do see Jay Cutler, though, having some success against the Jets secondary. If you can find the Jets -2.5 (head to the South Point!), lay that number. If not, find the best price at -3 you can. Also, OVER 45.

Chicago Bears at New York Jets
The Chicago Bears (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U) were looking at 0-2 last week, before stunning San Francisco with a late comeback to win 28-20 on the road. Can Cutler use win over 49ers to become elite?
Jay Cutler can be as good as any quarterback in the game and at times, be dreadful. Last week against one of the best defenses in the game, Cutler led Chicago back from a 17-point deficit on the road with four touchdown passes. Brandon Marshall caught three of those touchdown passes as the Bears won 28-20 on Sunday night football in the first game at San Francisco's Levi's Stadium.
Nobody said that Cutler didn't like the limelight. He's 6-1 on Monday Night Football, which includes three straight wins, 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions.
Cutler goes up against a very tough Jets' front seven, but a questionable secondary. Marshall (hamstring) and Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) are both playing with injuries that might limit their explosiveness.
But all Cutler needs is to get to the red zone where he can throw the ball up to his 6-foot-4 receivers or 6-foot-6 tight end Martellus Bennett.
The injuries have also spread to the defense, where they lost cornerback Charles Tillman for the year with a triceps injury. Rookie cornerback Kyle Fuller had two fourth-quarter interceptions against the 49ers, while defensive end Willie Young added two fourth-quarter sacks.
NFL Key injuries:
Chicago:
C Roberto Garza (ankle) is out.
LB Shea McClellin (hand) is out.
CB Sherrick McManis (quad) is out.
DT Jeremiah Ratliff (concussion) is out.
CB Charles Tillman (tricep) was placed on the injured reserve.
New York Jets:
CB Dee Milliner (quad) is questionable.
WR Eric Decker (hamstring) is questionable.
Can the Jets slow down the Bears attack?
The Jets are never shy about doing things the unorthodox way. Just when it looked as though quarterback Geno Smith tied the game late in the fourth quarter with a long touchdown pass against Green Bay, offensive coordinator Marty Morhingweg called timeout before the play began.
Smith was erratic, completing 16-of-32 for 176 yards with a touchdown and interception. Last year, Smith passed for 199 yards and three TDs against Atlanta in his only Monday Night Football game last season (Jets won 30-28). Wide receiver Eric Decker caught a touchdown pass before leaving with a hamstring injury. Chris Ivory ran a touchdown in the loss.
The Jets need to run the football against a Chicago defense that ranks 27th in the league agaisnt the run, giving up 160 yards per game. Ivory and Chris Johnson have led the Jets 179 yards rushing per game, which leads the NFL. Ivory has rushed for 145 ayrds and two scores and is averaging 6.3 yards per attempt.
Defensively, the Jets have allowed just 52.5 yards per game on the ground. That's because other teams have thrown the ball against their shaky secondary. Last week, Green Bay receiver Jordy Nelson romped for 209 yards reeiving against the Jets. To make matters worse, cornerback Dee Milliner is questionable with an ankle injury.
Analysis: The Jets have lost the last three in this series, but haven't faced the Bears since 2010. They have a lot to prove after winning in an unimpressive manner against Oakland and than blowing the lead at Green Bay. They could exploit a Bears' defense that was struggling to begin with that has injury issues.
